Very cool presentation. I like how you've shown the steps but, at the same time I appreciate that you've must have had decades of professional level practice and experience to understand how wood winds function. I hope you do a side by side comparison one day.
I just started backing on Patreon, was flipping through the book, I'm a little surprised that you don't have a build video similar to this one but for membrane clarinets? I loved your demo of them with your ducky bagpipe! 😍

Merci Nicolas pour les plans :)) j'ai déjà fabriqué trois Low D en suivant divers tuto YT, mais j'ai de toutes petites mains ! et mes doigts qui ne tombent pas naturellement ni même avec un effort sur les trous de la flute (surtout les trois en bout de flute)... 14-13mm for diameter of dowel for the whistle, and For anyone else wondering the mouthpiece at the top I think must be flush with the top of the whistle and then finish where the wooden dowel ends. So, essentially, it is the same size as the wooden dowel. My whistle has worked but I think I cannot play very well! Need to work on that
Super Nicolas .excellent comme toujours Je te suis depuis des annees depuis la turquie et j ai toujours galere pour faire les whistles bass ,a causes des dimensions faites pour les traversieres ou pour les trous qui sont super compliques a percer correctement. While tuning, how do you get the higher octaves in tune with the low octave while not changing the low octave? Do you enlarge the holes in a certain way? I have made a wooden whistle but the low and high octaves are out of sync with each other and I don't know how to fix it. Thanks a lot! I will give this tutorial a try. Also do you have plans for a low F or F whistle?
I run into this problem with flutes made from wood or bamboo, but rarely with PVC flutes. I don't know if it's the more consistent bore shape or what, but very frustrating!
I've read somewhere that making the hole bigger while tuning will do more to the low octave but moving it up or away from the end will do more for the higher octave
For an already carved whistle, you can try the same way as it is done in recorders: octave key. Try Hans Bracker's whistle and flute hole calculator. In this case, you will have additional fingering for clean C.
I'm really looking forward to trying to build some of this next summer when the semester is over. I'll snap that e-book up when it's done. Very cool Oh wait, this was 3 months ago. Maybe its already out haha. I'll have to check
Question about the measurement... the number for the length to the fipple... is it to the block or to the labium? Also on the low d is the gsp 12 wide and 7 across or the other way 🤔
you should also show people how to make a minisax using the same material, if you haven't seen (which i highly doubt you haven't seen eric) eric the flutemaker you should look up his minisax. just found yer channel and it's cash money.
@@NicolasBras excellent stuff my guy. also a vid on how to make transverse flutes would be fly. I'm having trouble making a good mouthpiece on my PVC flutes, I'm sure we could also use more pointers. plus you could talk about the construction of the windways of your other flutes like the african ones.
I was lately also struggling with building a flute... Do you have any webpage recommendation for calculating flute holes and which tuner app do you use? Looking forward for more tutorials in this awesome quality and more instruments I can try to build myself (in case of lots of upcoming free time ;)
I never used a soft to calculate holes, I observed a lot of flutes and start from this... but I'm finishing my ebook with a lot of infos into, I'm sure you will find what you need!
@@NicolasBras yeah. I tried different softwares but at the end I ended up with randomly trying. Worked somehow, but I'm definitely excited for the ebook :)
You can calculate the hole spacing, but like the length of the whistle, it will take some adjustments (a.k.a. 'voicing'.) This is due to a lot of differing factors. Interior diameter, wall thickness, how rounded or square the edges of the holes are, the diameter of the holes (start too small, then enlarge), the stiffness of the body material and so on. If hogwarts had a class in whistle making, it would be considered a Dark Art. The good news is that with some trial and error, and patience, you can get a decent sounding instrument without having 20 years experience making them.
So.... in those last instruments.... you seemed to use a system I have been trying to understand... the 3-hole Basque Txistu (in your vid two of them on a single "flute", genius!) Ever done a vid solely on txistu and how its fingering actually works? I cannot find any material _anywhere_ online...! You would probably be the first..! (or, there is a similar instrument with the same system?) Also ace tutorial, going to see if I can do something with this 😀
