  • Br Guy Consolmagno says that science is an important way to get to know God. In this conversation with Paula Gooder about Br Guy’s role as director of the Vatican Observatory, they explore what meteorites tell us about God; why science and faith are more compatible than people imagine and the importance of story-telling to both science and religion. Thinking of the season of Epiphany, they also touch on the Magi and what star they might have seen at the time of Jesus’ birth.
Br Guy Consolmagno is the director of the Vatican Observatory (www.vaticanobservatory.org) and president of the Vatican Observatory Foundation. His latest book is 'My Theology: Finding God in the Universe'.
Dr Paula Gooder is Canon Chancellor of St Paul’s Cathedral, and a leading Biblical scholar and writer.

I understand Guy has once stated that Religion and Astronomy are similar in that both require faith. I was hoping to hear Guy explain how Astronomy requires faith. The only answer I can think of is the Axiom that sits in the for-front of all Astronomy, that "in the absence of evidence to the contrary, we believe that the laws of physics here on Earth apply everywhere in the Universe."
Without faith in that, we know absolutely nothing about the Universe, ...AT ALL.

Perhaps -- a more important question would be Why did it take until 1979 to rehabilitate Galileo under the direction of Pope Saint John Paul II. After hundreds of years! In February-March 1616, the Catholic Church issued a prohibition against the Copernican theory of the earth's motion. This led later (1633) to the Inquisition trial and condemnation of Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) as a suspected heretic, which generated a controversy that continues to our day. Skipping over that bit of data is what still leaves people dubious about the church's use and abuse of science and to ignore the elephant in the room.
