I have severe endometriosis and is getting worse with time. I almost lost hope of keep my aquarium because of it. I've spent 6 months bed ridden and couldn't take care of the fish. I was thinking of shut down the aquarium, than I've found Father Fish's channel and now I'm changing my aquarium slowly to achieve the low maintenance. Thank you so much for your knowledge and bring me back the hope to keep my fishes healthy even with my condition

Same! Went to the creek today - first time this year after watching father fish. We went to our usual pond/creek where we find tadpoles and such and we made resurrection jars … and I was looking at all the pretty rocks and such … I’ll go back later.
I found a beautiful branch that was submerged and growing moss. I grabbed it. I currently have it in my turtle tank keeping it alive …but it works really well for them so I might see how it goes and find another stick to try in another. My boys will remember these days forever 🥰 We love creek/lake fun and starting fish tanks has been so rewarding and addictive for mom ha ha.

well i was thinking that potting or grden soil could have some decomposing organic matter which would leach a lot of ammonia
so is those ammonia okay or u have to like remove those ammonia through constant soaking in water?

    Wonderful video, Father Fish😄🥰
I personally like to neaten up the soil level and clean the glass really good, before adding the sand.
That way you don't have to fuss with fish nets etc, while the sand is in place.
Funny you used my picture of my tank from 2021, I didn't posted it on discord that long ago.
And yet, the next morning when I look on youtube, there it is in the thumbnail🤭
I'm planning on writing down some aquascaping techniques I learned over the years, to elevate the final look of the plants and decor.
It could be interesting for people to try out.
Your method of course doesn't change in any way.
It just adds to the overal look of the tank, make it look nice to the eye and still be a home to the inhabitants😀

Thank you for the guidance. I'm setting up my first real aquarium and while I didn't have peat moss, I have compost from our vegetable scraps and mulch from the redwood region of Northern california. I have 1 to 2 inches of sand, but the sand looks very deep. I'm unsure about that, but I suppose it'll be a nice filter.
I went to my local pet store and the owner handed me a bag of your Father Fish supplement that a customer brought in,which I thought was incredible, as I've been obsessively watching your videos for about a week now.

Im 50, kept fish most of my life and backed away from it due to costs and what not. Anyway I found your channel and love it. Im going to try your way and go natural but sadly I dont have well water nor anyone nearby can get aged tank water from. Im buying your substrate mix for the soil/peat and capping with sand. Also buying 2 of your 16 bunch plant mix to start it right. I guess Im going to have to use sink water and starter chem to begin with. Its an 80 gallon and was thinking of trying to use river water thats down the street but that is a LOT of hauling for 5 gal buckets. LoL Not sure if youll see this but any other tips to start with good water would be great. Thank you and Peace and Love to all you fantastic fish folk❤

So happy to hear your viewership is making tidal waves. Thank you so much for your Videos...your presentation, disposition and information.
I finally have a question : I have seen coloured sand (not gravel) in the pet stores...would this work as natural sand does or is there some natural element in the (real) sand that the aquarium's system needs ? Forgive me if I might have overlooked you talking about that.

    • @FatherFish

I have used colored art sand in betta tanks. It is color fast. No particular element in sand that benefits the system.

@@FatherFish one question, if I've already got 3-4" gravel in a few weeks old tank with some plants and about a dozen fish (35gallon 24" high tank), is it worth it to take everything out to redo the substrate or can I add sand or dirt or something to create an anaerobic environment? The tank is situated in a spot that makes getting to the substrate very difficult, I estimate about 5 hours to completely redo the substrate if I did.

@@FatherFish Thank you. I've been asking around on your discord and having people say it's worth it to take the gravel out, or take most the gravel out. I'm glad I returned to rewatch this video (I've set up a 10 gallon in this method, have two more 10 gallons and a 75 gallon 4'x 1 1/2' that I'll be setting up in the coming month or so). Really glad I swung around to see your response! That will save me a lot of headache. Eventually I may want to redo the tank, but I'm hoping to have it a few years first.
Came by because I goofed on the 10 gallon--put in 2" of dirt, and 1" of sand cap. Glad I haven't added any fish yet! I have about 50 individual plants in there not counting the guppy grass or duckweed. I put some aquasoil on top of the sand to just give the water column a good boost in nitrogen for the plants till I am ready to put fish in there. I'll probably move my zebra danios from my 35 gallon tank into this 10 gallon, they're kind of pricks to all the other tank inhabitants. But I wanted to let this age for a week. Much of the plants were grown emersed so I want to watch them without worrying about fish, this is my first time having this many and this large a variety of plants in an aquarium (unless you count plastic plants and algae!).

@Father Fish Not to come across weird, but I really wish I lived close by and you were my grandpa. I'm in Utah, and my grandparents are all passed away. I really love your channel, your discord, and everything you're accomplishing and doing for people like me. I've kept fish for decades, since I was 10. But my tanks always failed, because I never used live plants. Over time the mainstream fishkeeping method always breaks down because it's not self-sustaining and therefore far more prone to human error.

Awesome! I recently got into fish keeping and I setup a 40 gallon before really going down the youtube rabbit hole. My next tank is definitely going to be a natural aquarium setup like yours!
My question though. My current setup is just carib sea sand (3 inches deep) with multiple large pieces of driftwood and a dozen cattapa leaves. Should I try to slowly add dirt to this tank or just leave it as is? It has 9 black skirt tetras, 5 corys and 2 snails. No plants yet but thats my next step. Any advice would be appreciated.

Is that still possible to work because it looks like you add a sponge filter to all of your tanks? We have setup as you suggested the 1in of soil and 2 - 3 inches of sand and planted lots of plants. Father Fish, I finally did it, I put some dirt into an aquatic setup. It's a 1 gallon glass cookie jar, I used Miracle Grow organic choice soil (sifted) and capped it with sand. I have bacopa, rosette sword, and dwarf hairgrass and a small chunk of driftwood. I put a few ceramic media in there too. I will be adding my wild type shrimps to the jar later and a few bladder snails. I got myself a small clip-on LED light for aquatic plants. It was like $10. I was careful not to disrupt the sand when adding the water and everything is nice and clear, and parameters are perfect (I just used tank water). I plan to add some floating plants as well to prevent film.

@@davescheer5038 very well! I have the shrimps and the bladder snails in there and the plants have taken off. You can find it over on my channel! My friend tried it with fish but failed miserably because they have a larger bioload, and parameters were swinging all over the place. She moved those animals out to a fish tank.
I would recommend a larger setup for a betta, min 5 gallon. They are very intelligent fish, and they do go crazy, chew off their tails etc in small setups, due to boredom.
