This is the best product demo-video ever! Must have watched it 20 times in a row.. Well I'm out to buy a Farfisa now, and I don't even play organ.. YET!
Truly the finest representation of the sinister inner nature of the Farfisa Compact I have ever viewed. I own a red Farfisa (which I found at a hamfest, of all places, for $50!), and I can attest to the accuracy of this documentary.
Back in 1970, I was playing a gig, and right in the middle of the gig, one of the transistors blew out and my "A" switched to a "E flat". I spent the rest of the gig trying to avoid my "A" keys.
yeah.. back when we smoked weed, skated and played music all day... with little to no working... i ABSOLUTELY would hangout with this guy everyday... would even be willing to do so now.
I just found one of these in an old music store dumpster, brought it home. Brought it up on the variac and it works….definitely needs a tune up and kinda beat but its all there.
I saw this video back in college, I am now in my thirties crazy about old keyboards and I have you partially to blame. I passed on a used Farfisa Mini Compact in a pawn shop years ago because it was much too fragile for the abuse I would thrust upon it. Two friends of mine recently bought both Doric and Rheem Mark VII organs and I have to show them how to play them eventually- through my old Super Reverb and Leslie 147.
Great video, might buy a Farfisa eventually if I can find one cheap. Someone was selling one of the VIP models for $200 on Facebook in my area recently but I passed it up because I had recently bought a Bontempi organ (similar vibe)
Dude!!!!! Love all of your references...Gary Numan, The Grass Roots, Strawberry Alarm Clock!!!! Right on man, some classic stuff right there. This instrument is seriously a beast, definitely need to invest in one of these as soon as I am able. Such unbeatable trippy sounds, totally love it. On a side note, judging from your musical tastes I'd bet you would dig my music actually. I record retro psychedelic rock under the name Aura Blaze, feel free to check my stuff out on my channel sometime. One person actually commented on my "Life is a Lucid Dream" preview saying that it reminds them of "Incense and Peppermints" haha, what are the chances. Alright man, have a good one! Peace! -Rhode
How is this demo not viral? Only 73K views in ten years? Folks need to discover/rediscover garage/psych bands like 13th Floor Elevators, The Seeds, ? & The Mysterians. The B52’s (especially “Rock Lobster”), The Shaggs (world’s “worst” band 😂) and countless countless others! I subbed this channel as well you should. Thanks pdmillar!
At this point garage/psych revival has been done to death and not one of them ever figured out that Rock Lobster was the only time post-60s that anyone even ATTEMPTED to make a song as good as the Monster Mash
I’m going to be picking up a farfisa in the next two weeks…where in NY are you-would love to contact you if any repairs are necessary. I nabbed a beautiful red one in seemingly great condition-but we’ll see
Greatest video that ever existed in the world! THE WORLD!! FUCK Vox organs! Or all the other compact 60s organs! The true sound of Garage Punk! I have 3 Farfisa compacts! One for the road, one at home and one for spares. Nothing beats it! ❤️ Ps. Just kidding! I also love the jaguars, continentals, YCs and all that! And hammonds! But Compacts rule! And through my Leslie! Or my fender siver face! Sometimes both together! Hell and the skies all in the same little combo! Fucking crazy Italians! What a design!
I've always enjoyed the sound of the Farfisa, a great little device that creates some fantastic noises. I first learned about it from The Aquabats crediting someone as a "Farfisa Player" on one of their albums. Unfortunately I can't afford a Farfisa or any other combo organ for that matter, so I've had to settle for VSTs. I wish to flick those incredibly satisfying looking switches and play on those keys at some point in the future...
I think you'd be hard pressed to find a more entertaining instrument demo. As others noted, great references, and classic riffs you don't always hear on the organ, but work well here. Definitely highlights the Farfisa's unique sound........THANKS for posting and rock on.....
pdmillar Hi Paul; i'm a electronics enthusiast who also owns an oscilloscope, musician, and keyboard fanatic; i must say that this is the BEST instrument demo i have EVER seen. When you brought out the oscilloscope to actually see what is going on, my hair stood still. And when you said "NON RETRIGGERING MONO STABLE MULTI VIRBRATOR CIRCUITS", i laughed till tears ran down my eye. In fact i have tears in my eye at this point in time. Thanks for making this world a better place to live. And glory to italy and it's patriotic oscillator waveshaping...
They use what's called a Harley oscillator. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hartley_oscillator I have two. One is now working, and the other is a mess. Chewed wires, and it smells like mouse piss. Keep that cat.
In the WORLD! yes! this is probably one of the best equipment reviews Ive seen online! You're a legend dude! And the madcap laughed and we all went to sleep under a umbrella of eggs
judging from early b52s live appearances (before they even released their first record) where they already play rock lobster, it was indeed a farfisa combo compact (sometimes also a duo on which she played a handful of bass notes)
@gtjoesalutes That's 100% correct, the main difference is that the irregularly-shaped pulse waves create a far richer harmonic structure than most other instruments using flip-flop dividers (=square waves containing only odd-numbered harmonics)
Paul, you are a goddamned mad scientist and I love you for it! I'm a guitarist but have been in rapture with the gospel for years. I just bought my first. RHEEM. Pretty nifty. I dig your video. I will subscribe now AN UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCE!!
@Luminescence9 It's the same Panasonic WV-3240 tube camera head I have used for a lot of videos. But I was also screwing around with a prototype RGB->NTSC color encoder my friend Lars built when I edited it, couldn't help myself.
@caffeinatedrecording And I didn't even play any Doors covers!! But we all know the Compact is better than a Vox :) Check out the second to last video I posted. I play this organ in my new wave band. (Kidding, I have nothing against Continentals or the Doors)
Amazing. Can you do the organ part in Section 43 by Country Joe and the Fish, the Monterey Pop version? I got out my EMU Vintage Keys and played some Farfisa sounds yesterday, but its not as good as the real thing.
This is the best product demo-video ever! Must have watched it 20 times in a row.. Well I'm out to buy a Farfisa now, and I don't even play organ.. YET!
this guy is the biggest legend of all time
Truly the finest representation of the sinister inner nature of the Farfisa Compact I have ever viewed. I own a red Farfisa (which I found at a hamfest, of all places, for $50!), and I can attest to the accuracy of this documentary.
I watch this video every day.
I enjoyed everything about this video. It was as good as Terminator 2. Thumbs up. Like.
4 years later, and I agree.
this is one of my favorite videos of all time even though there's no way i'll be able to own a farfisa compact
Back in 1970, I was playing a gig, and right in the middle of the gig, one of the transistors blew out and my "A" switched to a "E flat". I spent the rest of the gig trying to avoid my "A" keys.
Awesome story 👍
😁😁😁
Then what happened….?
@@heli-crewhgs5285 I had to play avoiding the key. I missed a couple times. Lol
@@PittDaddy …and what happened after that?
This not only a demo. It's an art of the instrument, the player, and their vibe.
Ah..the cat too..
Best demo hands down. You are a lunatic and I love it.
Fun and engaging video! I like your sense of humour, and hearing Incense And Peppermints brought a smile to my face.
i love this guy..after the first 6 seconds, i knew i loved this man.
this video is ahead of it’s time now people are trying to replicate this look
Watching it again, 3 years later.... why this hasn't won an Oscar yet?!
I sincerely appreciate how much chaos you managed to inject into this presentation.
This is the best video that exists in the world... THE WORLD!
Nice Incense and Peppermints
yeah.. back when we smoked weed, skated and played music all day... with little to no working... i ABSOLUTELY would hangout with this guy everyday... would even be willing to do so now.
Slugbug fucking rules
I just found one of these in an old music store dumpster, brought it home. Brought it up on the variac and it works….definitely needs a tune up and kinda beat but its all there.
this video is too ahead of its time

amazing video.... maybe the greatest achievement in human history
I've lost count of how many times I've watched this video. It never gets old.
god dang it I love this video
Well this, and the Vox Continental. Both have such a wonderful pure sound.
Paul, you're my hero. Watching this again 1 year later. Please do more videos!!
Holy shit, it looks like 2024 video mimicing 1990's video
Yes the Farfisa Compact is the best keyboard instrument ever, I own 4 of them.
Panther Combo share!
Great video, might buy a Farfisa eventually if I can find one cheap. Someone was selling one of the VIP models for $200 on Facebook in my area recently but I passed it up because I had recently bought a Bontempi organ (similar vibe)

2:42 B-52s classic organ sound!
how do you know so much about synthesizers and old electronics? They are very interesting to me but I would have a hell of a time repairing one.
+1 for the Cat tax at the end.
SENSITIVE MAN MUSIC .... LOL SO MANY GEMS HERE
Love that sound at 2:07.
incense peppermint from strawberry alarm clock
YES, LOVE that song! 🍓❤👌🏼
I love this dork
How couldn’t you

The Shaggs music is so futuristic that I don't dare imagine what they would have sounded like with a broken vox jaguar
Paul is a sensitive new wave guy... 🤪
You’re ahead of your time
this is still amazing
Incense and Peppermints, the color of time!
*Thank you* for the "Rock Lobster" riff!
My high school had a fast 5 -- decades before you were born!
Now in 2023, best part is your drippy reverb voice!
I always keep coming back. Excellent production Mr. Millar...
Wonder if these guy alive stil ?? 2021. Hm
can confirm, he is alive
This is my favourite YT gear video ever! I really hope I never have to meet, work or socialise with any of the 16 ppl who thumbs downed it
Been about a year since I first watched this. Had to come back it is that entertaining!!
I’m going to be picking up a farfisa in the next two weeks…where in NY are you-would love to contact you if any repairs are necessary. I nabbed a beautiful red one in seemingly great condition-but we’ll see
Brooklyn, E. Williamsburg

I get the feeling Paul D. Millar is an electrical engineer as well, a mad scientist
BEST INSTRUMENT DEMO EVER, FUCKING CREEPY !!! (indeed you're not nuts enough to play Light My Fire) Truly goth instrument.
When you flick through the available stops, I can't help but hear old Tex Avery cartoons :)
Excelent advice
Couldn't be better
Awesome demonstration!
Damn I wish I can afford one

Great!!!! What a fun video!!!!
Agreed
"But Paul, how does it work? You may ... NOT .. be asking!"
Best instrument demo on TH-cam.
judging from early b52s live appearances (before they even released their first record) where they already play rock lobster, it was indeed a farfisa combo compact (sometimes also a duo on which she played a handful of bass notes)

WELP, NOW I GOTTA GET ONE.
Love this video! Would like to see more farfisa content
I never realized what a cool riff that Rock Lobster riff was until this video.
@gtjoesalutes That's 100% correct, the main difference is that the irregularly-shaped pulse waves create a far richer harmonic structure than most other instruments using flip-flop dividers (=square waves containing only odd-numbered harmonics)
This is simply amazing.
Holy shit. This video changed my life. You're my new personal hero and god.
This is brilliant, you've sold me
This is great, wry humor included!

Best demo I have ever seen. Roland should should hire you.

who cares what games we choose....little to win, but nothing to loose! Lalalalalalalalalalalalaaaaaa PERFECT!!!
Still the best thing I've seen on youtube.
@Luminescence9 It's the same Panasonic WV-3240 tube camera head I have used for a lot of videos. But I was also screwing around with a prototype RGB->NTSC color encoder my friend Lars built when I edited it, couldn't help myself.
I love everything about this
@caffeinatedrecording And I didn't even play any Doors covers!! But we all know the Compact is better than a Vox :)
Check out the second to last video I posted. I play this organ in my new wave band.

The Masked Marauder by Country Joe and the Fish is prettry good, too.
20 year old frankie...
Used one in a band through the 80s. Have tapes of the band with one being used.
what kind of music 60s garage?
mind uploading them here?
best. instrument. demo. ever. thank you so much.
Nice Incense and Peppermints!
this is simply the best video on youtube!
Dude, Your voice is perfect for this Demo.
@caffeinatedrecording Haha, that's great. I'm just being facetious, I love all combo organs. Voxes even look marginally cooler with the reverse keys.
