I find it somewhat amusing that someone in NCR command decided to waste their rangers time by sending the hit squad three times to the courier before actually allowing them to try and carry out the hit.
I think another commenter nailed it by pointing out that you are not only a threat to the NCR, but a potential resource. They’d rather not waste a resource if it can be avoided.

It’s kind of weird how the ncr hit squad doesn’t do hit squad things until three days later, kinda just enforces that legion ones are better at what they do considering the first time you meet one of them they just say “die lmao” and start trying to kill you.
to be honest, i could imagine a gameplay reason for it. Youre not in legion territory much, so if youre hostile to the ncr you're probably way more likely to get in shoot outs. This way the threats are balanced out. though, it doesnt really pan out like that. Usually whenever I see the rangers they just. dont follow up on their threats (assuming i dont kill them then and there ofc) in universe i think its less 'the ncr is bad at what theyre doing' and more 'the ncr has less resources to waste.' After all, if you can threaten someone to play nice and they do, thats better than losing a ranger trying to kill them.
@@pheo4156 the entire goal of that team are to be hitmen as you don’t hear from them or see them at all throughout the rest of the game. The ncr also does have the resources to spare it in most cases it involves you pissing off the right people. If you let’s say shot up camp mccarran and killed everyone in the courtyard you e just pissed off the ncr military which would prompt rangers to be deployed to hunt you down. However if you were to say piss off a significantly wealthy Brahmin barons who has strings they can pull within the government it’s likely they would deploy something more akin to veteran ranger sharpshooters that haven’t been wrangled from them by Chief Hanlon or General Oliver. TLDR: it comes down to: who did you make angry (in this case the army most likely) and what do they have to deal with you at the time.
Not weird to me at all, NCR basically wants to maintain that illusion of agency/choice while still being silently oppressive, so they can say it’s on you when you don’t kiss ass to them in the time you’re given. The Legion by comparison has nothing to hide, you are either with them or against them, and the punishment for defiance is death. I love it since it’s an important bit of characterization for the NCR itself.

It's because they're spread razor thin as it is in the Mojave. It risks a lot less resources to attempt to intimidate someone than it does to actually try to kill them, and when the NCR is already having trouble scrounging for firepower to deal with the Powder Gangers and Caesar's Legion, potentially losing a whole squad to a mailman with head trauma is far from ideal. So, they give the Courier a chance to turn things around and avoid fighting until they've determined that they can't be reasoned with.
@@t2av159 1. "Mentally deficient" isn't a guaranteed or canon thing, you can easily set high Intelligence at the start of your playthrough. 2. Someone who can apparently get shot in the head with a Magnum at nearly point-blank range and not die, is probably honestly going to be a high-priority to deal with... if the NCR actually had any reliable means of knowing that, anyway. They really don't know anything about us apart from what they witness first-hand.
I remember getting this after I completely wiped out multiple NCR bases. Meanwhile if I killed one random legion recruit I get guys with anti martial rifles wanting my head. I guess the bear is clawless.
With the NCR, they probably think it was a misfire and your companions thought you were going to war, for the legion, they assume you did it on purpose.

Someone needs to make a mod to buff the heck outta these guys. Replacing them with Veteran Rangers, and giving them really OP weapons like AMAT rifles, assault carbines, and sequoia. Buffing all their stats too, that way players don't just kill them immediately and take their gear. I feel like these guys should have been an actually terrifying force to deal with. Tougher than the legion assassins, but also showing up less often.
The NCR squads would've been so much more terrifying if it was 3-4 veteran rangers who understand why they're sending a squad to deal with one person and tried to snipe you.

What could’ve been cooler: Instead of the over confident cowboy rangers the one to give the message is a single Veteran Ranger that just says “3 days” and leaves without elaborating. If you ask him to attack immediately he just says that his orders were to just deliver the message but he wont hesitate to retaliate if you attack first. After those three days the ambushes are you being sniped by a single veteran ranger with an anti-material.
Did they become hostile if you side with House or Yes Man? Will everyone from NCR attack you if you failed quest 'Don't tread on bear' by siding with the aforementioned ?

I've always had the feeling that the NCR is afraid of the Courier, so they give you time to improve your reputation with them before trying something. (after all, who wouldn't be afraid of a guy who can single-handedly wipe out their army?)
It's funny cause I feel like NCR Hitsquads might not have been so heavily memed if not for both how Legion hitsquads immediately attack, but also how *easy* it is to get them to start spawning. I feel like a lot of people's first instincts upon wandering into Nipton is trying to take on Vulpes and his goons. Those who succeed and continue down the path will most likely face a hitsquad as early as sometime during or after the vipers encounter hiding behind a billboard, and they go for the throat almost immediately. Compare that to the NCR, who are marginally less likely to be villified in the opening hours of the game and thus less likely to start spawning hitsquads early. The most likely time for a character, roleplay or not, to villify the NCR is in the midgame or later. By then, you're strong, and now this hitsquad is threatening you instead of taking the shot? Hell, if you've already been dealing with Legion squads, it only ends up seeming pathetic rather than genuinely a concern. If the Legion weren't so easy to trigger (and their hitsquads not so trigger happy) then the NCR squads might've seemed a little more intimidating.
Being used to the Legion and with all these threats I was honestly expecting the NCR to either send snipers or a mortar team to take you out from afar, or at least play smart and show up when you're roughed up. This however is just pathetic.
Honestly, this is yet another reason why I prefer siding with the NCR. The Legion hit squads and assassin's keep things from getting too boring between missions, and they usually have some good loot. Especially if you have Jury Rigging and need to keep your weapons in good working order. The NCR, meanwhile, doesn't have that, so it's not advisable to antagonize them unless you're planning to play using melee weapons or something.
Cannonically the Vet rangers all wear the black riot armor with the duster coat and the red eyed gas mask helmet. The info regarding the Rangers both NCR and Desert rangers can be a bit confusing at first but I'm pretty sure the vet desert rangers wear the duster armor and the NCR wears the drill Sgt style armor. Even tho technically after the rangers unification all desert rangers are considered part of the NCR.
Now if only the NCR radio support was as useful at getting to me as these guys.

Theyre stronger on higher levels
There's no reason why they should go in so early in the game. After all, at the time they show up you are usually still relatively small fish.

How do I fix my reputation with them?

I've always had the feeling that the NCR is afraid of the Courier, so they give you time to improve your reputation with them before trying something.
(after all, who wouldn't be afraid of a guy who can single-handedly wipe out their army?)
Does anyone know why i dont get ncr hitsqauds sent after me anymore??? Im vilified with the ncr and im not getting attacked at all or anything??
It's funny cause I feel like NCR Hitsquads might not have been so heavily memed if not for both how Legion hitsquads immediately attack, but also how *easy* it is to get them to start spawning.
I feel like a lot of people's first instincts upon wandering into Nipton is trying to take on Vulpes and his goons. Those who succeed and continue down the path will most likely face a hitsquad as early as sometime during or after the vipers encounter hiding behind a billboard, and they go for the throat almost immediately.
Compare that to the NCR, who are marginally less likely to be villified in the opening hours of the game and thus less likely to start spawning hitsquads early. The most likely time for a character, roleplay or not, to villify the NCR is in the midgame or later. By then, you're strong, and now this hitsquad is threatening you instead of taking the shot?
Hell, if you've already been dealing with Legion squads, it only ends up seeming pathetic rather than genuinely a concern.
If the Legion weren't so easy to trigger (and their hitsquads not so trigger happy) then the NCR squads might've seemed a little more intimidating.

Being used to the Legion and with all these threats I was honestly expecting the NCR to either send snipers or a mortar team to take you out from afar, or at least play smart and show up when you're roughed up.

Honestly, this is yet another reason why I prefer siding with the NCR. The Legion hit squads and assassin's keep things from getting too boring between missions, and they usually have some good loot. Especially if you have Jury Rigging and need to keep your weapons in good working order.
The NCR, meanwhile, doesn't have that, so it's not advisable to antagonize them unless you're planning to play using melee weapons or something.

So those ranger are actually veteran ranger?
Cannonically the Vet rangers all wear the black riot armor with the duster coat and the red eyed gas mask helmet. The info regarding the Rangers both NCR and Desert rangers can be a bit confusing at first but I'm pretty sure the vet desert rangers wear the duster armor and the NCR wears the drill Sgt style armor. Even tho technically after the rangers unification all desert rangers are considered part of the NCR.
