I love the concept of the Synth sentience dilemma but HATE how it’s actually handled. Like Shaun’s plan is to literally make you the head of the institute but you have ZERO ability to be like “hey stop synth production until we can sort this issue out” or “hey maybe kidnapping people and replacing them is stupid and only hurts us and the commonwealth”. The railroad literally exists to help synths integrate, kept ignorant to the plan, they could totally be used as a funnel FOR the institute, no more kidnapping, no more replacement.

1 - things will get bad. 2 - things will get worse. 3 - it's not good for you.

Personally I still don't think this is actually Shaun. Kellog had been in service to The Institute since before 111 and talks about how the "Old Man" ordered it and how he "pulled the wool over his eyes" and is "tying up loose ends". I think that this is the same Director who had the cybernetics implanted in Kellog, and I believe he had some installed into himself too before ending the program to focus more attention on the Synths. The reason they took Shaun, I believe, is because they needed A.) Unspoiled, uncorrupted Pre-War DNA, and B.) Either needed to or wanted to observe the long term growth of Shaun to better create the framework for the Gen 3 Synths. Mama Murphy says she can't see where Shaun is, but feels his "life force". If all of the G-3 Synths walking around are actually MADE of Shaun, then it makes sense why she can't see him, the original no longer exists, not as one person, but as all of the synths that are walking around. It would also explain why some members of the Institute revere Shaun so much, not just the Director, but the REAL Shaun. Like he says, "Mankind, Redefined".

No, on my first play through I realised that the institute was a dead-end way before that. On the one hand, you have the Institute. Fully capable of manufacturing skilled professionals of any discipline that can supplement the settlements of the commonwealth at a moments notice. Farmers, soldiers, teachers, builders, doctors, scientists, engineers, people, who, given time, can work with the various communities of the region to recover and reclaim the commonwealth. No draconian supervision or oversite required. Just program the right skills and the right attitude and spread them across the wasteland like Jacks. Maybe even reactivate an abandoned vault or two and use it them as remote operations centers and distribution facilities. The possibilities are limitless. On the other hand, you have an exclusive organisation that takes that same capability and uses it to sweep the floor of their basement. 🤔 ...and their grand plan? Lock themselves up, under guard of a secretive authoritarian police force. These idiots built themselves a prison, programmed the guards, and locked themselves in. They had to go. That being said, what the goal they should have been working toward is also the brotherhoods worst nightmare. ...and would probably be strongly resisted by the railroad, who would capture and reprogram as many useful synths as they could into helplessly dependent wastelanders or unhinged raiders.🤔 However, the plan would likely simultaneously exploit the minute men and, in the long term, inadvertantly elevate them to a continental power, the likes of which has not been seen since before the great war. But if they're under your control, that's more of an asset than a problem 🤔
