@@brandiedavison9466 Johnny had a lot of nights off, and there would be a guest host. Ed McMahon was there even with the guest hosts, ergo there more than Johnny was.
CNR and Brett Sommers what a combo on Matchgame! So happy watching that old game show! So funny and unscripted! The shows today totally suck! Long live the seventies!
I heard him mention this once in an interview. He was only supposed to be in the pilot but Hope Lange liked him so much she convinced the producers to make him a regular.
Every clip I have seen with CNR on the Tonight Show, they used that music when he goes to the set. I guess it's from "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" (since Chuck won a Tony for playing Bud Frump), but I don't know the name of the song.
Incredible Talent, I watched This Show in my teens after I got off work at 10pm thinking, gee, Charles Nelson Reilly has the same Goofy giant glasses as I do.
Great interview. You know, I've been searching every corner of the web to find out when Charles has been on Hollywood Squares, if he ever was on it. Johnny said tha the was a panelist on that show. I first thought clearly it was a mistake, meaning to mention Match Game, but Charles didn't correct Johnny when he sat down. Was this taped before Match Game premiered in 1973? Maybe Charles was a guest on H² but I'm not sure. Can anyone find out?
Yes, Charles was on both Match Game and Hollywood Squares. I'm not relying solely on memory; I've watched videos of him in both here on YT in the past month.
Ok, here's what I gathered. Apparently, this was recorded around 1972 since they mentioned what I believe to be the Valley Music Theater being "new" (it actually had just been reopened after a previous bankruptcy). What's funny is at 01:56 CNR says he's 26, but if this was recorded in 1972, he would have been about 41. In any event, that would have been right before the 1973 Match Game overhaul that become the really big hit. According to IMDB, his Hollywood Squares appearances date back to Feb 9, 1970.
@@TazTalksYouListen I thought maybe Matchgame existed before '73, but don't know when it started. So you're saying Matchgame had sort of a different format prior to '73? Also, what year did they stop using "Matchgame '7__" ? 1978 or so? You'll talk, I'll listen. : )
"The most over-exposed unknown." So true!!! Not bieng born until '63, I had no clue as to what he did beyond his illustrious game show career. :-D (Oh, and I prefer Ed as well).
An adult man billed with three names? Charles Nelson, really?! I was embarrassed just seeing him on TV game shows, ESPECIALLY sporting eyeglasses 2x bigger then necessary. He was a waste of expensive air time...nothing personal of course.
A gem from back in the days when late-night talk shows were genuinely entertaining. These guys are sorely missed.
"Well, he's here more than you are...."
I think that was the best I've ever seen someone slam Carson.
...and he got to come back! That's the true testament of the Reilly charm.
Charles Nelson Reilly was great at everything he did! I loved him on The Ghost and Mrs. Muir and on The Dean Martin Show!

douell0001 😔 I don't get it.

The last line is comic gold.
I enjoy how genuine he is when he asks how are you

Yes: perfectly put!!! :)
You said it!!
Yes! The 1970's also had great music and movies.
YES!!!! Watch the Match Games everyday!
They used to let the guests talk, interact and be themselves. Now it's just: tell one rehearsed story, plug your project, and off.
How I miss Johnny Carson! No one will ever come close to him.
CNR = under appreciated 🌟
Sadly forgotten it seems. CNR was the definition of “a character.”
CNR was so at home with Ed and Johnny. RIP all.
The first major role for CNR was as Claymore Gregg on THE GHOST & MRS. MUIR tv series. He was hilarious.
I heard him mention this once in an interview. He was only supposed to be in the pilot but Hope Lange liked him so much she convinced the producers to make him a regular.
You gotta love CNR he is so funny
I wasn't expecting that zinger from Charles Nelson Reilly. Good one
What an amazing, witty man he was - CNR.
What? No politics? No anti-trump obsession?

I'd love to have seen the whole interview.
Is this full interview somewhere?

Gee, back when the hosts and guests had class. God rest them all.🙏

Johnny smoking a cigarette so casually. Times sure have changed.

So funny," he's here more than you ".
@Gnillob802 It was a great show.
Now, will someone please tell my why they ever got rid of that fabulous green deep-pile shag from the set?
Fallon can't even hold a candle to Leno.. and you know how bad HE sucked!
Seinfeld
was he gay
Naaaah
Super!
Alex Baldwin does a better job being Charles Nelson Riley than Charles Nelson Riley himself!!
