  • In August 2021, I cashed out my Amtrak Rail Pass coach seat ticket for 10 rides of any distance. The ticket was offered at a $300 discounted price point that I couldn't resist and it proved to be the catalyst of a truly unpredictable and classic adventure, where I experienced the spectrum of modern Americana 🇺🇸 🚂 ⛰ 🌆
It took me forever but I stitched most of my video clips together and added a voiceover to go with it. Looking back on the trip, I feel extremely privileged to see my country in this way -- and grateful for the old and new friends who helped me out along the way.

Really enjoyed the video and the messages. I was traveling on a $200 (that's a 2) rail pass (I'd been waiting 12 years for that) from Saint Louis. I know it was the same time because I was doing it in reverse of yours , south to San Antonio and on to Chicago to New Orleans and back to Chicago to get back to Saint Louis. And my coastal train to Seattle from Sacramento was cancelled because of the wildfires in the Northwest. I did a little touring but mostly spent my time trying to make tight train connections. Seven of eight legs of the journey were late, 11 hours tardy into LA but made it to San Diego and back by Greyhound to catch the Zephyr in Sacramento. ,
When I got back I swore I would never ride Amtrak again. But your message is helping me rethink that. It was the people I met along the way, mostly passengers very different from me and a few gracious Amtrak employees who saved many a day.
Looks like you found the Lady Bird Johnson National Redwood Forest in Northern California. That was a big surprise for me on an earlier driving trip along the West Coast, a wonderful area, I agree. Surprise because I grew up in Texas in the LBJ years and knew Lady Bird for her accent and her bluebonnets.
BTW: I didn't do it on this trip, but instead of sleeping in the coach seat I have slept in the observation car on the Sunset route. Also note that the distance between coach rows varies as much as 10-16 inches. So if you have a choice look for a roomier one.
My biggest Americana adventure after this one was to drive the 3,235 miles of Highway 20 from near Kensington Square in Boston to Newport, Oregon.

When i was on the trip i was reading Charles Dickens' description of American railroads in the 1840s and it's amazing that budgets and technologies evolve, but the experience remains the same in a lot of ways. The train is the people's transit and it's impossible to make the same types of connections with strangers in the car! Thanks for sharing your stories, keep on traveling!

Nice editing putting this together with good music choices to make it flow. Travel is hard but rewarding, and I think you brought that out. thanks.

Amtrak coach car especially isn't the prettiest mode of travel but that makes the nice parts even better!

Looking to do something wild like this with the pass! Very helpful! No bike for me though, a possible mistake on my end.

Hey Axi, I really enjoyed that video thanks for it.
I'm a french guy who's planning the same kind of trip, and wants to get the most out of it, just like you.
Maybe can we get in touch ?
I'd have few questions about the best way to manage the segments.

I think you were a bit brutal with your assessment of the northeast. I worked for 20 years from New York and Albany, NY. We had a 92% on time performance. We were providing transportation at an affordable price . College kids from U Buffalo ,Syracuse U. ,Cornell and Rensselaer Polytechnic Uni.I knew 3 Governors of NY , actors Kate Black , Merill Streep , Eric
Roberts and Julia Roberts . I also knew then Senator Joe Biden . We worked as affordable public transport , not as a tourist railroad.
