How to Survive 3 Nights in a SEAT on U.S. TRAINS, Solo | Amtrak California Zephyr

  • The other week, I ACCIDENTALLY booked myself a single seat (not a bed!) on Amtrak's California Zephyr, a journey crossing the ENTIRE United States of America over 4 days. It wasn't easy, but I'm always up for a good survival challenge :D
See how I survived this crazy journey! Would you do it too?

The trick is to trat it like a hiking trip. You bring Mountain House or similar camper food. You can get hot water from the cafe. You bring a pouch of Dude Wipes to give yourself a daily sitzbath and then use your deoderant, toothbrush, etc. You also bring some no water shampoo - it's easy to find in most grocery or department stores. And the seets kick back to pretty close to flat, so instead of cramping sideways, you can lay out. The foot rests will support your feet to get you close to flat. As a 6'3 person, I had no problem stretching out.

I'm fairly sure this part of the video is being misunderstood. Yes, there are a lot of rude Amtrak employees, especially in New York State, and they're a curse on the company and I've often gotten on their case when I've run into them as a passenger; but if you listen carefully to the tone and rhythm of this conductor's voice and look at the expression on his face, it seems pretty clear that he isn't being rude: rather, he's enjoying her vlogging delivery (I think that's him laughing appreciatively in the background after she says "Guys, this feels slightly surreal"), and is just good-naturedly kidding her about the awkwardness of her rolling a suitcase, recording a video for an audience, and exiting the train car all at the same time; and she seems to get the joke and to be going along with it. Note that the next passenger is several feet behind her, so there's obviously no real need for her to hurry; and note the high, artificial, pseudo-theatrical way in which the conductor says "Come on, you're holdin' up the line, we all want to get outta here, yeahh!": he's not actually being authoritarian, but rather is making fun of himself as an authority figure and taking the opportunity to joke around with a very charismatic passenger (who he was probably a bit smitten by, as just about any red-blooded hetero male would be).
That said, the light-hearted nature of this interchange is a bit too subtle to come across clearly in the video, and arguably should've been edited out for that reason.

If that's the case you're wasting your time on garbage Amtrak. Jump a freight. Do it on your own schedule. Ride in the daytime for the greatest part of the ride instead of missing it at night. And oh yeah, save the ticket price. It's free. Watching America go by on a train is one of the true American adventures.

Hey Eva, I live right there at the California/ Nevada state line where the I-80, the train tracks and the Truckee River runs south to north and parallels in a community called Verdi. And the Amtrak train passes by my house all the time. One of those passes you were on board. It’s the story of two ships. I really love how you have a compassion for life, I can see it in your eyes and I can feel it in your smiles (it’s contagious). Also enjoyed your journey and visit with the family out in the middle of the desert on a Toyota pickup truck. Godspeed Eva on all of your endeavors. Happy New Year.

You can!!! just make the plan. It will take just over 70 hrs (or 3 days). I traveled Los Angeles to NYC in 2018 & 2019. I will take train trip over plane trip from now on. Shorter the distance, the cheaper. You can have free shower too. I'll tell you all about it, if you plan to travel on Amtrak.

@@youngchu1638 How do you take a free shower?

    • @youngchu1638
      @youngchu1638 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@IMSiegfried You must purchase Business Class or higher ticket to have an access to Metropolitan Lounge (shower) at the station (Los Angeles, Chicago, Portland, Washington DC, Philadelphia, NYP, Boston). Both 2018 and 2019 (LAX to NYP), I purchased Business Class tickets (CHI to ALB in 2018 through Lake Shore Limited) (CHI to NYP in 2019 through Cardinal) which gave me access to shower in Metropolitan Lounge in Chicago Union Station. It is spacious and clean. Unless you are going to take shower every morning (after you wake up) in the train, I recommend Business Class ticket over Roomette or Sleeper (in my view) (without spending thousand dollars and change).
I always prepare mini bottles for my shower kit (from Walgreens) (Nice! On The Move Travel Bottles 4 Piece Kit 3.4 Ounces - 4 ea) and put shampoo, body wash, essential oil, face wash, and salt scrub) and the toothbrush, sea salt, and small medication bottle for sanitizing the toothbrush (submerge it into salt water between brushing).
If you happen to purchase Roomette or Sleeper (Bedroom), you can have access to shower inside the train. Sleeper has both shower and toilet access from the room but you must travel to shower and toilet for Roomette. The meals and shower accommodations are paid for both Roomette and Sleeper passengers (both have beds). If you are private person traveling with one of your best friend and like to have shower inside the train, Roomette will be good choice.
It is better to call the actual agent (1-800-872-7245) on the phone to find out exactly what Amtrak offers and how they differ for each class. Good luck to you.

I did the California zephyr from Chicago to San Francisco. To be honest I was exhausted the whole trip. I couldn't sleep, I had to keep the door to my roomette open because it was hot. They started talking on the loud speaker at 6am. The power outlet in my room stopped working so I had to charge my phone in the sight seer lounge. They force you to eat with strangers when all you want is some peace and quiet. It was winter time and the shower froze up. The bathroom is disgusting. Its just a hole that sucks down the waste, no water. Spent an hour or two stuck on a mountain side for a high wind warning, hour or two for a blizzard in the Sierra Nevada mountains, another hour or two for a broken rail in Utah. Don't use the train if you think you are going to get somewhere on time. I didn't get to see San Francisco at all. I arrived late and it was raining. The train would be OK if you don't have time constraints and have time to explore a few days off the train. Honestly after 3 days on a train you want off! Even coming back I missed my connecting train and had to take another one. I couldn't sleep again because I was to arrive at my train stop at 3am and I was afraid no one would wake me up. You are just better to take a car. You have more privacy and can stop to stretch your legs whenever. I did get some nice pictures though.

I thought the video was great but missed that important aspect of cross country train travel which doesn't usually happen on shorter trips or if you drive across the country.

I traveled roundtrip from Tucson, AZ all the way to Fayetteville, North Carolina on Amtrac in a roomette by myself. From Washington, DC to Fayetteville and back I was in coach as well as another part of the trip I don't remember. We went from Tucson to Amarillo, TX then up to Chicago and further east then south, and back again. While I was in the shower the train
had a little accident and almost ran over a truck. Luckily I was able to keep my composure. On the trip back there was a passenger who had a medical emergency and the train was delayed for hours. I loved looking out the windows and the luxury the roomette afforded. I didn't like coach, In the middle of the night, I stepped on my glasses. I was without glasses for several days. It was July 2013, my 50th highschool reunion. We had a blast!! I would do it again. I have a friend in Oregon I'd like to visit and I would go coach knowing what I know now.

One thing to mention to people wanting to do this:
The cafe has snack food, but it is both insubstantial...and at a large mark-up. Like, a single plain bagel is around 3 dollars...a small microwave pizza is 7 dollars...a box of M&Ms is 3 dollars...I don't know the exact prices, but it is basically paying full meal price for a snack. Basically, if you want to eat on the train for three or four days, you will need to pack a lot of food to go with you. By the end of it, you will probably be missing real, fresh food a lot!

Sweet video, this was the first I’ve seen of someone in a long distance coach ride..lm getting ready to do something a bit extreme myself… I got the rail pass (gives you 10 rides over a 30 day period…in coach). I got it on sale for $299 and just couldn’t say no (especially since I have $800 in amtrak vouchers to use before next September)… my trip will take me from central Florida where I live up the east coast, across the top over to Seattle then down to emeryville… after that I will zig-zag the Midwest trains before ending up in Philadelphia and coming back home… my longest no-hotel period will actually be a round-trip+ ride because I will be going from Chicago to LA on the SW Chief, spending just about 12 hrs touring LA and hopping on the Texas Eagle to get back to Chicago before transferring to the Cardinal for my stop in Philadelphia… that is about 148 hours… but, that doesn’t account for train delays which can often add hours to the trips…I better pack some baby wipes to freshen up (luckilly they apparently have dressing rooms for coach)

I'll be in the cheap seat ($134), but I'll be packing my own food and drinks for the ride. When I get out in Reno (kinda like Las Vegas minor), I'm checking into Silver Legacy taking a long soak in the large hotel bathtub. I've also done multiple long haul Greyhound trips. So I understand the hygiene part well.

I endured 4 days/3 nights on a coach trip from Vancouver-Edmonton-Saskatoon-Winnipeg-Toronto in 1979. I slept on the luggage rack above the seats. The conductors felt sorry for me and allowed me to lay my sleeping bag out every night. That would not happen in these days.

    $241 = ₹18,000.
In India - Vivek Express covers 4300 km, more than LA to New York which is 3900km.
And here is the ticket prices for various options :
    General sitting : ₹700/$10
    Non AC sleeper : ₹1100/$16
AC sleeper : ₹3500/$45 including breakfast and meal everyday
AC sleeper pro : ₹4300/$55 including breakfast and meal everyday
And believe me, service is top notch !

In 1992 i took a train from San Diego to Rhode Island that went through Seattle. 5 Days/5 Nights coach. Best moment was when the two gentlemen seated behind me whom had a radio that could listen to the train personnel communications, over heard 'go get the duct tape' after the train came to an unexpected stop in the middle of North Dakota.

Hello! I'm Eva as well and I was researching coach experiences. I am traveling with friends from Sacramento to Denver, Colorado a few months! which is only 30 hours. I was going to get a roomette by myself (my friends are sisters and getting a bedroom for the 2 of them). so I think I will try COACH! (Price around 280 - 300). I can't justify paying 1500 -1600 for a roomette by myself. We are also going to stay in additional accommodations so I know I will get a proper bed when I'm in Denver. :)

that's a very comfortable train...I've been to Russia two years ago for the World Cup....rode a train (third class) from Moscow to Sochi...the trip almost took three days.......it's a sleeper train though but it doesn't have all the accommodations you have there...very long train journeys which last for days are common in Russia

The best part of being in coach is you see the scenery from both sides of the train. In a sleeper you just get the views from one side. I took a shower 🤷‍♀️ Must have changed that rule from 18 yrs ago.
