Got the Sony’s as a backup pair. They are fantastic. Hard to fault them as the sound is great and the ANC is great as well. Bargain IMO. You have to play with the EQ to get the best out of them but I had no issues with harshness
My main pair are Bose QuietComfort II which are simply fantastic in every aspect. But for a second pair the Sony's are very good. Not as good obviously and especially given the price difference. But they are not awful to use and as I say just tweak the EQ and you get a well balanced sound

You nailed it. The sony's sound is just too sharp.. Even at low volume. I couldnt keep them on for more than 5 min.

Sonys fits better for me, took a while to get used to az40 but they have great sound and the connection between devices are seamless

On the Technics EAH-AZ40M2 you meant 18 hrs with ANC ON, I guess?

The respective price points would suggest that this is not an ideal comparison I think. A fairer comparison would perhaps be between the Technics and the Linkbuds S. I have no experience of any of them to be fair.
