If you want a short ride out on the trails or something (unaccompanied by a leader or not), this would be considered more renting. Leasing is different. It tends to be more long term (or is intended to be), e.g. months/years. You can either full or part lease a horse, depending on your preferences and the owners' along with the horses availability etc. When you lease a horse, the money paid is more towards the upkeep e.g. shoeing, feed, board. In more formal leases, a contract is signed stating who has the horses what/how many days, terms of return to the owner, what can be done with horses in specifics. This is not always a requirement, as i have never been contracted to a lease. Some places will let you ride out on your own, but it's not as popular as having a guide especially if it's in a tourist area - who knows what could happen? Hope this helped.
Hi, Equestrian Mad! There are lots of leasing options and all are based on what the owner of the horse will let you do. For me, right now I quarter-lease Wrangler which means we pay the owner of the horse a monthly fee and I get to ride him once a week and have a lesson once a week too. We do not pay for anything else like a vet or farrier. If he gets sick or injured, we don't have to pay any of those bills and we don't have to pay to board or feed him either. Sometimes the owner is busy and she'll let me ride him more. A couple of weeks ago I took some extra lessons on him so I could get ready for my first show which was sooo much fun! Gave him back after lease as he was jealous of the other two and got mean about it unless the attention was only on him
