In the original track you can hear he doesn't just restart with the open E twice but instead when the riff restarts he plays second fret A and then one open E (as opposed to two open E's). It gives the song some more movement in case anyone else noticed it sounded slightly off and felt off playing it that way

As a newbie, I’m just jumping right into this. I’m definitely struggling with the transitions between chords as I’m struggling to find my finger placement. I also have small hands and double-jointed fingers so it feels doubly hard! However, I had this feeling of “I can’t believe I’m playing the guitar!” even though I suck at the moment. 🤩
The first time I was able to (some what) play an actual song with actual chords I felt the same way, awesome feeling

@@Willyjohn69420 So far I can play the main riff easily, I'm struggling to land my fingertips on the correct frets and strings when the riff changes. I find myself getting the "plick plick" sound a lot from accidentally muting strings.
@@ANT1989 that’s pretty normal even Marty did that once or twice and to be honest it’s Nirvana, Kurt always played pretty sloppy 😂 but that’s what gives it character too. Don’t give up

I’m pretty sure that’s just copy and pasted off of the internet but it’s still helpful so I’m fine with it.
Probably one of the most fun/easiest riff I learned as a beginner that kept me going and I think a lot of people can relate to that.
This was my grandpa’s favorite song. I only have one memory of him, and it was when I was like 3. My dad started playing this and I wondered where he learned it and he told my my mom’s dad taught it to him. I still have his guitar from the 70s lol

Because he's actually playing it incorrectly. For one, the riff ends on 2nd fret A string, but he's ending in on an open E string...and the chords are wrong as well. There's no muting of the G string in the first chord. Just play an F#sus4. And the second chord is a straight up A major chord, not an Asus2 as he is playing.

Just wanted to say: I’ve been playing guitar 4 months, I learned the fundamental lessons from my uncle whose played since he was 4 years old, but largely I’ve taught myself how to play. And I learned by watching some of Marty Schwartz free lessons here on TH-cam. I still have a long way to go but every song I can play I’ve used his tutorials first than downloaded the tabs later. Great guy and fun to play along with and he makes learning songs interesting.
I love watching these videos, even if I’m not learning the song at the time. Like I could be out on a walk, or cooking dinner, and just watch these videos to retain the information and go play it later. Thank you Marty, your a godsend
Great lesson! I like how you take your time on the fretboard. Verbally identifying what string and fret while you play it and breaking the song into small parts is really helpful too.

I’m glad I found this. I was learning off Music Is Win’s video where he was teaching his wife and he didn’t say they dropped from E to D. Couldn’t figure out why it was sounding off, as I was tuned normally to EADGBE.

For anyone struggling to mute that open G with the F# power chord, you can also just use your pinky to mute to it if you angle your fingers to about 45 degrees (wish I could show yall what I mean with a picture). It makes transitioning easier, and has the same effect.

This is what I was missing 10 years ago when I bought a guitar.. Easy but cool stuff to learn, instead I was stuck with a book with symbols I didn't understand, trying to play children's songs I didn't care for. Needless to say I have learned more in these few days since I tried learning again then I did in the month or so I played back then.

I watched him them in concert. It was magic, halfway through the set they put the spotlight on him and he said ok shows over, it all went dark then a few minutes later the band came roaring out to teen spirit!!!!! and played another hour / I had that poster of them on the door of my flat near London for years.

TheAwkward One listen to the actual song he’s missing a note. At the beginning you play D twice but you’re supposed to have a connecting note at the end of the intro riff when it restarts every time. Listen closely to both and you’ll hear it

That's exactly the reason why I was done with that video after not even 1 minute. Telling people that it is fun, pretty easy and iconic and can't even break down the easiest shit correctly is not what i want to learn, no matter if it's paid or for free. This is the result if people only strive to put out content and not even give a fck what they are releasing.
