  • Construction of a stand for a kindling splitter. Most people mount their kindling splitter on an old tree stump, but I wanted something with a longer life expectancy, so I used scraps of 6x6 posts milled straight and square so they could be glued and screwed together.

I appreciate the post! I haven't figured out what to use as a base yet. You gave me some ideas to think about.

Thanks for your comment. I had the same delima, and found some leftover scraps of 4x4. It made a good, solid base and you can keep adding more 4x4's if you want a wider base. Mine has always held up to hard use and it is stable, as long as it is sitting on solid ground or any solid surface. You could do the same thing by just gluing and screwing 2x4's together and just keep adding more until you obtain the desired size. Good luck!

Great idea. Just not feasible for me. I’m just a single mom that made a cinder block grill in our Urban backyard. I ordered a ton of wood delivered and need to make tinder.

Sounds like you might need a full size wood splitter. This one is just for making the kindling for getting a fire started. More often than not, I use my woodworking scraps and the kindling splitter. Using well cured wood and the kindling splitter, I can split a bunch in a short amount of time. I have a gas powered wood splitter as well. When I split smaller pieces, I can either keep running them through my wood splitter, or toss them aside and use the kindling splitter to split them down to the size I need. I hope I never have to go back to using a splitting maul, wedges and a sledge hammer. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
