It's interesting how a lot of Japanese players actually went to university and started their career a little later. In Europe or rather i should say Western countries, the younger they are when they sign a professional contract the better.

His coach (Fernando "Wrinkles" Castro) asked my mom to convince him to play because he was going to be the best but my brother was determined to become a doctor and now is one of the very best MD specialists of all europe (and we are from Colombia)

Watching the Liverpool game last weekend was really eye opening. I haven't seen much of him outside of his assist for Japan in the WC. But his dribbling in that Liverpool game was comparable to Messi, Hazard or Robben imo.

I think you're missing out that one of the reasons why he didn't accept Kawasaki Frontale's offer. He saw that his other U-18 teammates Itakura Kou (Now at Borussia Monchengladbach) and Miyoshi Koji (Now at Royal Antwerp) were promoted to the first team but barely getting any minutes despite being good. Kawasaki Frontale has the best youth system in Japan but they put a lot of emphasis on foreigners because they want to dominate J.League and AFC Champion's League so instead of giving minutes to youngster they give it to foreigners. Mitoma debuted for Frontale in the 2020 season and the rest is history.
So that's why his movements were so subtle, to the point of nearly not entertaining, and yet his opponents still miscalculated his movements, making his dribble that efficient. I like the way where he looks like he intend to shoot hard with his right foot only to change direction with a subtle switch, and followed by unexpected shoot with his right foot. Some context: The University of Tsukuba is a top tier national university in Japan, academically. It is not yet a Harvard or Oxford, but still, the equivalent of Berkeley or Virginia, Durham or Warwick.
He reminds me when I was young, imagining how I would get out of some situations. A lot of us did that when we were younger. We would perform some dribbles alone while imagining how our opponent would react to a feint and then comes the trick lol. While growing up, we usually stop that. I myself had quite few successful dribbles. Mitoma took it seriously and now he's destroying some defense. He makes me want to go back in the past and do it properly. If I was 12 years old, I would read his thesis and practice. I think japanese kids will take his thesis seriously, specially the strikers and midfielders. Mitoma played here in our Belgian league last season and just from the summary of his first match I knew he was something special. He literally did everything right. I didn't understand why he was still under-used at Union and in the first half the of season for Brighton, but Brighton's manager finally seems to see it and reaping the fruits.
one reason might be his character. he has much power than what people think , almost 180cm and 73kg, but he is too reserved. To be top players, they need to appeal their agresiveness and self confidence.

Sadly Japan's market ain't get a look for bigger European club. But hopefully after several Japanese players doing great this season like Daichi, Take, Tomi and Kyogo + phenomenal world cup runs it could be different for Japanese football. He reminds me when I was young, imagining how I would get out of some situations. A lot of us did that when we were younger. We would perform some dribbles alone while imagining how our opponent would react to a feint and then comes the trick lol. While growing up, we usually stop that. I myself had quite few successful dribbles. Mitoma took it seriously and now he's destroying some defense. He makes me want to go back in the past and do it properly. If I was 12 years old, I would read his thesis and practice. I think japanese kids will take his thesis seriously, specially the strikers and midfielders. I'll keep that in my mind, in 10 years we might see some smooth skillers from Japan thanks to Mitoma.

Mitoma played here in our Belgian league last season and just from the summary of his first match I knew he was something special. He literally did everything right. I didn't understand why he was still under-used at Union and in the first half the of season for Brighton, but Brighton's manager finally seems to see it and reaping the fruits.
one reason might be his character. he has much power than what people think , almost 180cm and 73kg, but he is too reserved. To be top players, they need to appeal their agresiveness and self confidence.

That is a good point; there is a huge roadblock for youngsters hoping to break into the first teams of any big league clubs. Makes a lot of sense for Mitoma to earn a degree instead of getting potentially loaned out incessantly, and it worked out nicely.

Sadly Japan's market ain't get a look for bigger European club. But hopefully after several Japanese players doing great this season like Daichi, Take, Tomi and Kyogo + phenomenal world cup runs it could be different for Japanese football. And I can't get more excited when my club Barcelona seriously consider Daichi as their target for summer.

Going to university before joining a pro team is far from "unusual". There are four other Japanese players in the UK alone who went to uni before entering the pro ranks, and some of Japan's most famous historical stars went to university (everyone from Gon Nakayama to Yuto Nagatomo). The university leagues in Japan are quite competitive and several schools are in the fourth and fifth tier of Japan's pyramid. In fact, a lot of teams go out of their way to scout and sign university grads. Kashima Antlers, among others, has a long history of signing guys out of university and turning them into star players.
