Ukraine was financially broke after the Soviet Union broke apart. Millions of Ukrainians lost their savings since the money was in Moscow banks. It happened to my wife and her family members.
Maybe they could have kept 50 nukes but the people in charge were too close to Putin and wouldn't have kept the devices.

The Nordic countries don't have nuclear weapons and they are fine, because they have separated themselves from Russia as early on as possible. Ukraine had it more difficult, as they got their independence so late. Russia never grants independence without trying to claim it back later. From what I understand, a country currently at war can not join NATO, they have to wait until the war ends. This is part of the reason Putin is dragging the war on as long as he is. Putin does not want NATO in Ukraine, he claims he made that clear with the Budapest memorandum (and it is never mentioned in that agreement). Putin claims he only agreed to allow Ukraine to become its own state if it does not join NATO. Ukraine began talks to join NATO, and was about to have their first meeting to make it happen. This is when Putin struck Ukraine. Putin knows the rules of joining NATO as well, and knows that throwing Ukraine into war would prevent them from being able to join NATO.

I think Zelensky is right in that either NATO membership or becoming nuclear are the logical alternatives to future security. Russia would never have started a war against Ukraine if it were a nuclear power. Russia would have learned to live with a neighbour pursuing its own future agenda, like is the case worldwide for most neighbouring countries. Ukraine did give up its nuclear weapons from the USSR era because of pledges from the US, UK and Russia to safeguard Ukraine's security.
If the US in future wants to go isolationist, then other countries are going to have to consider that nuclear power for themselves would be an alternative to the US nuclear umbrella, which the US might not in future commit to.
Russia is still imperialist in mindset, European countries will need to protect themselves as best they can.

I don't think it was a direct threat at all. When I first watched the NATO Press Conference, it seemed clear that he said they have 2 choices, re-becoming a nuclear power OR becoming a NATO member but that they REJECT the nuclear option and "we choose NATO." He knows Ukraine is not qualified to join NATO at this time but may be in the future. He is signaling his intent in hopes that NATO countries will continue to support, and hopefully increase with financial and military equipent assistance, which is under threat politically at this time. He is laying out the reality of Ukraine's situation without a DIRECT threat, although the prospect of desperation was laid out. Maybe his statement was easily distorted as a direct threat, esp by Putin who loves to spin reality, rather than what it was, a clear statement of the reality. Listen to him about Ukraine's need for unwavering and increased assistance, for all our safety.

Ukraine WAS a nuclear power. it held most of the Soviet Union's nukes originally. Russia felt threatened for sure then. Ukraine should have kept some nukes and given up the rest. if they even had kept a dozen it would most likely prevented the invasion of Ukraine. So now with the documents NOT being honored. it makes the agreement VOID by common sense. so Ukraine should develop or the US should give them nukes covertly or develop some that Ukraine could claim that THEY developed . doing it that way, The US has deniability and yet helps protect Ukraine's right to exist. True it would intensify the war, but I think this would be short-lived as Putin would then have cause to make peace or be nuked by Ukraine .. and Russia knows that if they nuke Ukraine (even though they are not NATO) that NATO would be on Russia's ass in a heartbeat which Putin would definitely not desire. the US may act passively but when you piss us off. ... OMG your ass is grass. Al Qaeda learned that real quick. as has other enemies whom we have fought have learned. Yamamoto knew that by the poor timing of announcing war causing the Japanese attack on the US in WWII. that they had pissed off a sleeping giant. I don't think the US is sleeping right now. i think they have most things in place. as they are increasing production significantly for the war machine. they want our populace to remain calm so when Russia crosses the right threshold or final line. that US can rally the people in a similar fashion to 9-11

It is frustration coming out from Zelensky and I can understand his frustration. They had nuclear weapons granted they were under their control of the Soviet Union at the time, but they willingly gave up those nuclear weapons because they were asked to buy the west but on that condition, they were also guaranteed protection, even though we are giving them weapons and military support of doing it with one of his hands tied behind his back we give him everything they need to finish this war and push Russia out permanently or let him have

Winston Churchill is turning in his grave at the cowardice shown by NATO. Ukraine is fighting the war NATO was created to fight. Instead we in NATO have spineless bureaucrat leaders who are more interested in poncing around in fancy suits and filling their offshore bank accounts.

So it's okay for Russia to give Iran and north Korea nuclear capabilities for help in the war, but not so for ukraine to talk about giving itself a capability it gave up for security it wasn't given. Give ukraine what it was promised or back it getting the deterrent it once had.

No they didn't. The Ukrainian president who signed the Budapest Memorandum "President Kravchuk" was a old Communist who served in the SSR as a party bureau member. He was a fully paid up Russia lover. He would never have asked for NATO membership and happily gave the nukes back to Russia. He also returned a VAST amount of weapons including most of the Ukrainian navy to the new Russian federation.

America has too many places that the borders can be breached and also history shows we are open to the dregs of the world along with good people. Dictators and communist keep everyone in and everyone out which solves their problem.
