    When I was a teenager in Salt Lake City in the 1980s, the Mriya flew into SL Int'l Airport. I lived on the foothills on the east side of town and could see the plane from my freaking house 15 miles away as it approached for landing. It was ungodly huge and left an indelible impression.

      That's a big debate, if they change too much then global certification of the new plane might be a challenge.
      Also some of the original engineers argue that the Myria was excellent because it was so easy to do field maintenance on without specialist equipment.
      But agreed, there are newer, more efficient engines, more advanced control systems and better materials available today.
      How far can they go is the question?

      About the only improvement needed would be modern, more efficient engines, and perhaps avionics.

      It won’t be rebuilt. That was the whole point. The USSR paid for it and the replacement cost is nearly $3 billion. It wasn’t viable as a commercial aircraft unless you got it for free. Ukraine can’t afford it and no other country is going to spend $3 billion on somebody else’s plane.
      It was a real shit move by Russia.

      @@StoneInMySandal I consider this plane to have a value beyond commercial profit. It is a national symbol and pride of a country. If the Eiffel tower was destroyed in a war, you can be certain France would rebuild it afterwards, regardless of cost.

      @@makeracistsafraidagain That part is not such a good idea. A real end to the invasion of Ukraine and to the danger posed by current Russia means an end to the Putin regime.
      Heavy post-war sanctions have always had the same effect: Seriously compromise the economy of the sanctioned country, which in turn means an unhappy population, some years go by, and a new madman makes promises to "make Russia great again", people listen to him, and you get a new Putin, and the whole thing starts over.
      That's what happened in Germany after WWI, and we all know how that ended.
      The aggressor here is the Putin regime, not the Russian citizens. The best way to prevent another Putin and a radicalized Russia is for Russia to have a strong, connected economy, and to be a modern western society, with a strong middle class who wants peace and prosperity.

I saw the plane once again in Kandahar Air Field while deployed in 2008. It is a shame that it got destroyed, but I know that the Ukrainian citizens are resilient and will get Mriya flying again.

    • @TheTonytiger89
      @TheTonytiger89 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Possible, but not likely. It’s less a question of resilience and more a question of economics. Antonov lacks a lot of the production capacity it had pre 1991, and there’s no sort of production line for many long life components. The amount of money that it would take to build tooling, just for a single production aircraft is astronomical.
      I wish I’m wrong, but sadly I really doubt it’ll ever get rebuilt.

      If an economic case existed for such a large aircraft, someone would build it. Lots of countries have the ability to build this kind of airplane if there were any clear justification for it. Ukraine has many other dire economic and military needs to address before taking on a luxury project that not even the USA or China bother with. The Mriya sounds similar to the Concorde, an example of technology that would never happen if people listened to their accountants.
      For example, if Ukraine survives Putin's "special operation," then priority #1 in the rebuilding project will be to make Ukraine invasion-proof in the future. Look at the map of Ukraine and try to guess the cost of that. What will Ukraine do, build another Maginot Line around its entire border with Belarus, Russia, and the Black Sea coast? Geography has not been kind to Ukraine's democratic ambitions, by giving the nation a long flat tank-friendly land border with the world's largest (by area) dictatorship.

      This plane very much embodies the name it was given: an engineering marvel once believe to be only a dream but made real; a manifestation of the collective dream of the entire Soviet engineering and industrial might where everyone from Ukrainian aircraft workers to Central Asian miners have a hand in its development and creation; a living relic and heirloom of the USSR's glory days, giving dreams to those who see it and to those who wish for a bright future; and after its destruction became a literal dream to the same.
      In my opinion, the destruction of the Mriya is the best physical metaphor of this entire sorry war. It's very much a relic of the days Ukraine and Russia were brothers back in the Soviet days and its destruction mean that those old bonds are forever destroyed and gone now...

As for the finished one, it's tail, left wing and two thirds of the hull can be salvaged since they didn't sustain considerable damage. They can probably also reuse the engines of the damaged wing also, because the fire didn't reach them, and they just fell on the ground when the wing detached. They probably can't salvage a lot of the front section though, since that's where the major damage is. I just find it strange that there was only one of these ever built. Like, I get that it was enormous and probably extremely costly to build.. But surely throughout it's lifetime, there would have been enough demand -or even just concern- at one point for the company to at least have a backup aircraft in case it crashed or was shot down? Also, major props for something of this scale to be built and still have nothing come close to it in 34 years.

    • @kwerk2011
      @kwerk2011 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was extraordinarily expensive to manufacture (for example they started building the aircraft and then constructed a building around it to complete the aircraft as no hangar was large enough), but was done so by a cash strapped government in the middle of the most expensive pissing contest in history. There wasn't enough cash in the late 1980's Soviet Union for one of these mighty beasts, let alone more. I'm sure once the aircraft had been internationally certified and found a unique commercial position in the logistics field the Antonov company would have loved to build another but the cost could never be absorbed by a commercial interest like that.

Mriya's backbone was not broken. In fact the parts of the aircraft that were burnt. While one of a kind. Actually would need to be majorly updated eventually. Nothing on this plane would be used on a new plane. Once an aircraft is deemed destroyed, it's components cannot be used on another commercial aircraft as there is to much risk of part failure etc. Aircraft are not cars. You can't go to a junk yard and grab parts off a plane that was destroyed and slap them on another plane. Private planes may get away with it, but commercial aircraft that fly around the world cannot.
      Even parts of the 225 that look 'ok' are not. Especially since it was shelled, explosions, fire etc. It's aluminum an thus does not tolerate much heat, and there would have been alot of heat that would warp components.
      As an engineer you should understand that more then most.
