Honestly, I feel like watching this in sub really affects y'all's understanding of the story. Yes, JP VA is amazing but if you find it hard to follow stuff, maybe try EN dub instead? I see a lot of jokes about the animators getting depressed once a Levi scene comes up but the opposite was actually the case. Arifumi Imai (the animator who was responsible for this scene as well) actually felt really unmotivated after season 2 and read the manga to get new inspiration. When he saw Levi‘s epic fight scenes, he actually called dibs on them and asked Wit Studio if he could start working on season 3 before the rest of the team. The remaining action animators „complained“ that Imai really took all the good bits for himself. So in reality the action animators were most excited to work on these scenes. Just gonna pipe in here about Ilse's Notebook and watch order: Most people suggest watching it after episode 1 of season 2. It seems you missed a bunch because you waited, so here's what you missed (this isn't spoilers at this point). Early in Season 2, when everyone was talking about Christa, and the cadets mention she hangs around Ymir, Hange clearly recognizes the name. When they show Ymir's backstory about her being taken as a child and set up in some sort of cult. The blond woman in the cult that was always prevalently being shown is the titan that Ilse runs into. Ilse and Ymir look very similar, this is why the titan mistook Ilse for Ymir.
Spoilers I’m pretty the “subjects of Ymir” was supposed to be referring to Ymir Fritz the founding titan, since all of the people on Paradis island, are all Eldians who are the descendants of Ymir Fritz
12:06 she actually did...and the very first time the name ymir is mentioned to hange in the earlier episodes of season 2, hange does have that reaction of shock like.. "ymir?"
So about the timeline. Mike is alive, he died at beginning of season 2, Levi squad is alive, they died at the end of season 1. The Levi squad died in the 57th expedition beyond the walls. Ilse Langnar died in 34th expedition beyond the walls. It is mentioned by Hange, that 34th expedition was about a year before the events of this episode. I think it is safe to assume the events in this episode are taking place at the same time Eren and others are still in the training corps.
What made Ilse's Notebook so peculiar was back when it was released, S2 hadn't come out. It was the first time we heard a titan could talk, let alone bow to a human. And the name Ymir made us think what its connection be to the Ymir we knew who, back then, hadn't revealed that she was a titan. Wish you could've watched this OVA before S2, but oh well. Glad you got excited for the first opening cause that's my fav, too! XD
You're right about the shocking reveal that titans can talk. This is the first time in the manga and anime that a titan talks. However unless you were spoilt then you wouldn't have made the connection yet to the scout Ymir as her name is deliberately not said once in the entire story until Sasha's flashback in season 2. This episode is the first time "Ymir" is said in the story.
@@TequilaToothpick really? Then how would have I known back then? I did watched S1 a couple of times before the OVA but if what you said is true, how would have I known Ymir's name?
@@redfoxakame No idea. Maybe somebody who read the manga mentioned it in a discussion thread or something? I can confirm though that her name is not said a single time in season 1 and even at the start of the manga volumes it's listed as question marks until the Season 2 arc.
8:33 And that's why we wanted to watch this BEFORE s2. The reveal of Ymir's (the one in the scout regiment) name is "so what" but if you see this first it's "Holy crap - why is she named Ymir". You might recognize that titan as one of Ymir's cult members. The one who shook her head during the police raid. The titan started gouging its face right after ilse told it to die. BTW, this OVA is the only one based on the manga. It's a chapter to itself. Ref the unique capture device. You saw that in 1x24. they used it on Annie but she was bigger and stronger than the titans shown her and broke out. They call it episode 3.5 because, chronologically, it takes place between ep 3 and 4. When you see the captured Titans at the end, that was from the cleanup in Trost after Eren blocked the entrance with the boulder. But it makes no sense to watch it in that order. It's funny how many of the questions you ask in the post-episode discussions can be answered with "Yes... but also no." 53:39 You didn't see any king in s1. That's was just some random noble who likes to play chess with Pyxis.
You guys are stupid....the purpose of episode 1 here is to confuse people more about who ymir really is, so saying to watch season 3 first before season 2 is retarded.....it will all be revealed the importance of "ymir" and watching this over season 2 first ain't the way to go. This is just a back story that has caught up to present time
Imo the titan talking ruins the reveal of the beast titan being able to speak. It also makes you suspicious of Ymir early on, when there isn't a reason for our main characters to distrust her. So yeah, I prefer watching the OVAs after the main story has passed the point where anything could be spoiled.
To Oak: I think you hear “80s music” because Yoshiki wrote the song. Yoshiki formed the rock band X Japan back in the 80s (then became one of the biggest group in Japan music scene)
52:33 In case someone hasn't already mentioned it, the guy playing chess against Dot Pixis in S1 wasn't King. Marquis wasn't his name, but his rank. A Marquis is a nobleman who is ranked above a baron/count, but lower than a Duke/Prince.
Hange actually did react to "Ymir" in the episode before her transformation. yall just didnt catch it because it wasnt on ur mind. but they did make a point of showing her suprise
Yep it was sad. They missed a lot by watching this later than intended. They had no reaction to Ymir's name being revealed either because they hadn't seen this.
I see a few people have already explained how Hange and Levi had a reaction to hearing that there was a scout member named Ymir in season 2, but another big takeaway from the Ilse's Notebook OVA is that (depending on the order you watched it) this is the first time anybody heard a titan speak. For people who watched this while waiting for season 2 that was a shocking development, and then was followed up in season 2 ep 1 with the beast titan appearing and also speaking.
I love how this is really the first time that you see Levi in action. This time he's not fighting to avenge his friends or to save Eren, he's just using all of his skills to survive
In episode 12 of season 2 (the final season) remember the fact that Eren was laughing while crying saying “I can’t change anything” remember that one thing of Eren laughing and crying when he feels he can’t change anything!!! That is extremely extremely important in a later season like extremely!

on the YMIR OVA timing thing, if you watch this before season 2, you do notice Hange's reactions to hearing Ymirs name in season 2. This OVA was released between season 1 and 2, and in my opinion it was supposed to be episode 0.5 of season 2. This was released around same time with lost girls 1 and 2. I'd have hoped for lost girls after season 1 but seems like it'll be skipped, but it'll be nice right before season 4 as well
Eek...yes you did spoil yourselves with knowing Kenny's last name at this point (also from that Levi funk pop). That said, I think Isayama chose the name Ackerman because they are "devils." Akuma = Ackerman? Everytime someone in the show says akuma I always think they're saying "Ackermann" RIP Hange squad: Nifa, Abel, Keiji. You've been with us since Stohess in season 1. We now only have Hange and Moblito. This opening is one of my favorites. Red Swan is one of my favorite songs. I love the vocals, the piano, the drums - everything.
Fun fact, Abel was also present in the Female Titan arc, specifically you can see him as part of the group who were ordered by Erwin to defend the female titan after she called the titans.
Game of Thrones: We spent the budget for our season in a single episode. Attack on Titan: We spent the budget for our season in a five minute Levi vs Kenny's scene.
Ilse's Notebook was supposed to be watched before season 2 or after episode 1 of season 2. The relevance of the OVA was for you to remember this titan when our Ymir's backstory was revealed near the end of season 2. Maybe then you could have realized that she was called Lady Ymir by the people who seemed to worship her and that the titan in this specific OVA was one of the human followers of Ymir we saw in the flashback about her past. It's safe to assume this titan thought Ilse was Ymir (because of the freckles and physical similarity), and that is why the titan said "Lady Ymir" and showed respect. I still think it was great that you watched the OVA; however, now that you've finished season 2, it really doesn't provide new info.
The original phrase was don't bring a knife to a swordfight. The phrase kinda breaks down when it was changed to compare guns to swords, which isn't as great a comparison.
25:34 If i recall correctly, it wasn't clearly explained in the anime, but in the manga the experiment was to see the titan intelligence, if Eren was able to write in titan form and endurance, Eren transformed 3 times with only 30 minutes of rest and each time his titan form was smaller and weaker.
I was disappointed that they didn't show the Titan experiments in the anime. At the very least, seeing eren's titan try to write messages and build basic structures would've been a great visual.
I was looking for a comment that explained this because I see a lot of people confused are the experiments. It is explained clearly in the manga that this was Eren's third time in a row and that they had him performmany tasks as a titan before he exhausted himself. But yeah, in Japanese and English they just don't cover it... at all. So I don't blame anyone for being confused about Eren's transformations becoming weaker.
13:02 Illse's notebook is usually watched BEFORE season 2 as it became available at the inbetween of S1 and S2. The abnormal Titan is the blonde woman that was turned on the wall next to Ymir after their illegal cult worshipping sect was raided by the soldiers. She is one of the first that welcomed child Ymir when she became false goddess Ymir. Ymir's face was the LAST thing she saw before she was kicked off the wall to transform into a Titan. The Titan thought Ilse looked like Ymir and was trying to stop its compulsion to eat humans. She didnt want to kill her goddess Ymir. And after death she reffered her into the tree like a throne. 19:15 It's not a brand new behavior. It can't be a spoiler if you watched this in the order as pre-season 2. You'd already know Titans eat not for substance. Ymir transforming is still a surprise, and after season 2 you STILL dont know how she fits in the grand scheme of things. Ymir saying that there are bigger baddies than Reiner and Bertholdt, like a bigger group, that SHE didnt know Beast either, Historia being important are still crazy revealtions.
and yeah pretty much you can watch an OVA any time. But this one specifically would've been good to watch before season 2, all your questions that came from this episode, have either been directly or indirectly answered in season 2 already
Oh Red Swan is a very popular opening special the full song. I hope by the end of the series you guys listen to the full songs and rank them that would be a fun video
The "Chess Player" in S1 that Cmdr. Pixis was losing to was just some random noble, not The King. The "Erwin looking through the glass" in the intro is a kind of "flashback;" the man is his Father, a school teacher. The boy is young Erwin. The "stupid couple who tried to fly" that Sannes mentions under torture? Armin's parents; they were trying to assemble/launch a hot-air balloon to go outside the walls. It's why he was being raised by his grandfather. And at this point in the story, Levi doesn't know he's an Ackerman. He doesn't even know his family name; he's just Levi. ETA: that's opening may seem kind of light and fluffy, but it's going to hit HARD later in the season; eps. 16-18 especially.
crazy detail for yall, if you remember the military guy saying that he had to kill a couple trying to flee the walls , then lemme tell you , that couple is armin's parents , i forgot where armin mentioned this info but it is 100% canon
@1:25, you guys said the person who is a Redshirt was, Miche. Who you saw get killed from the Beast Titan and the titans he was controlling in the beginning episodes of Season 2. Edit: I noticed a lot of you guys saying we're going to lose this guy or this guys a Redshirt about characters in the first part of this video, these are all guys you've seen before who died after this episode which takes place in the past. Im going to suggest rewatching episodes in Dub or Sub again on your own times so you can familiarize yourselves with characters and more of the plot, because in later seasons stuff is just going to be going off and being answered in rapid fire or even offhandedly without too much fanfare. Trust me, it'll help.
I LOVE that you guys keep the intro short - I watch so many reaction channels and having to skip forward 5 minutes every time gets super old - thanks for keeping it short and sweet at the start!
the silence after ep3 is literally mood. the good guys getting shot in the face always turns my stomach a little. but the impact is massive for sure. and levis face when he yells kenny... chills
This season’s intro is one of my FAVES. It is so amazing and it tells some stories as well. I did not enjoy it at first but then it became a BIG favorite 😊
Forgot to add. OMG yall are soooo close to 300K subs my guys! Fingers crossed fellas! What a milestone of all ur hard work & dedication that will be!! Let's Goooooo!!!❤💞❤️
@BaddMedicine She wrote down Ymir's name , Hange just didn't know who Ymir was at this time so she didn't react to reading it... If you remember in the 'Warrior' episode when Hange first heard Historia say Ymir's name she repeated it because she remembered it being mentioned in the notebook.
It really is true. Anime and Manga demolishes US comics and television. Attack on Titan was just so densely packed and engaging - every episode feels like a book chapter's worth of information and you have to pay attention.
I definitely recommend rewatching season 2 episode 3 since when Mikasa mentions Ymir's name you can clearly see Levi and Hange show an interest in it. Also about budget, the change in style has less to do with budget and more to do with the character designer trying to be more faithful to the artwork of the source material. In anime Budget isn't a good way of determining the quality, it's usually the staff and talent as well as the a healthy working environment that gives animators enough time to actually animate the show. Attack on Titan had the Talent and the Staff but none of the Time and Good Working Conditions. The show is notorious for having troubled productions, episodes are literally finished hours before they're are set to broadcast.
1:02:02 In case you guys missed it, he was talking about Armin's parent. They both got killed by this Sannes for trying to venture out the walls using balloon. This was already hinted by Armin himself in S1 if i remember right.
I love how Oak still appreciates the new intro😂 it’s definitely not the same vibe as the others but he still went for the air-pointing when the music picks up haha awesome. Cant wait to see his reaction to 4.1 😆

8:33
And that's why we wanted to watch this BEFORE s2.
It's funny how many of the questions you ask in the post-episode discussions can be answered with "Yes... but also no."
53:39
You didn't see any king in s1.
This is just a back story that has caught up to present time
Up
Imo the titan talking ruins the reveal of the beast titan being able to speak. It also makes you suspicious of Ymir early on, when there isn't a reason for our main characters to distrust her. So yeah, I prefer watching the OVAs after the main story has passed the point where anything could be spoiled.
@@thomasgrimm1664 Ilse's Notebook was released before the Beast Titan chapter. Both in the manga and in the anime.
@@ChadBenjamin Seems weird to me, but sure, it's their choice. I'm just happy I watched the OVA a bit later.
Animation Director: Okay so uhhh... We have another Levi scene.
Animators: OH GOD NO!
To Oak: I think you hear “80s music” because Yoshiki wrote the song. Yoshiki formed the rock band X Japan back in the 80s (then became one of the biggest group in Japan music scene)
My dopamine goes up like a drugs seeing these gentlemen uploading new attack on titan video
52:33 In case someone hasn't already mentioned it, the guy playing chess against Dot Pixis in S1 wasn't King. Marquis wasn't his name, but his rank. A Marquis is a nobleman who is ranked above a baron/count, but lower than a Duke/Prince.
Levi: literally fighting for his life for almost 5 minute
Levi fangirls :
(including me)
Levi vs Kenny is Peak
The couple that was killed for trying to go above the walls were Armin's parents
It's Levi's season baby lets goooo 🔥🔥
They say every time Levi has a fight-scene, an animator dies from exhaustion
Some say.
That's "Humanity's Strongest Soldier" right there. Levi is a Human With Superhuman Ability. Levi is HIMothee
I seriously cant wait for the guys to experience season 4 and the specials. YOU GUYS ARE EXPEREINCING THE GREATEST PIECE OF FICTION OF ALL TIME.
The Levi scene next episode is insane.
That "Kenny!" Gets me hype every time.😁
The whole Levi sequence was done by one guy btw
The walls were built to protect the animation budget from Levi
I see a few people have already explained how Hange and Levi had a reaction to hearing that there was a scout member named Ymir in season 2, but another big takeaway from the Ilse's Notebook OVA is that (depending on the order you watched it) this is the first time anybody heard a titan speak. For people who watched this while waiting for season 2 that was a shocking development, and then was followed up in season 2 ep 1 with the beast titan appearing and also speaking.
I love how this is really the first time that you see Levi in action. This time he's not fighting to avenge his friends or to save Eren, he's just using all of his skills to survive
levi vs kenny squad is one of the best choreographed sequence of all time and music is amazing as always
I will mention, this intro makes so much sense for the season, and genuinely is one of my favs. My favourites have to be the last handful of intros
The look of total silence on all your faces at 33:37 & Quinn's "Face Off" was great hehe.
I swear Levi is better than Spider-Man at swinging.
In episode 12 of season 2 (the final season) remember the fact that Eren was laughing while crying saying “I can’t change anything” remember that one thing of Eren laughing and crying when he feels he can’t change anything!!! That is extremely extremely important in a later season like extremely!
Director: So theres this one fight scene
Animators: ..... Yes, and?
Director: Between Levi and-
Animators: aaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Season 3 part 1 opening song (the intro) “red swan” is fucking beautiful. Top 3 for me
Fr a lot of reactors dislike it because it’s pretty much the opposite of the first few openings
Agreed. I think it's beautiful and kinda haunting.
@@loco_logic for real, especially the end of the full version. with lines like "We'll fly away, we'll find a way" and "We'll see the end, we'll be the end" are crazy looking back after the end of the show
It took Arifumi Imai about 1 month to animate the amazing Levi vs Kenny's squad action scenes and Levi vs Kenny's squad clip th-cam.com/video/CeLvx_1FBdk/w-d-xo.html is one of the most watched anime clips ever
Только потому, что другие аниме-клипы все время удаляются. Та же сцена признания Райнера набрала 58 миллионов просмотров, когда ее удалили несколько лет назад. Таких роликов было много, но их безжалостно удаляют.
of course because LEVI is the best, the rest I don't care I am here only for levi
LEVI is so badass, he is super awesome, his fight scene deserves more apprecation, I don't know why I saw someone with alien language here, I think they are levi-haters, but I don't care I am here only for Levi
Director :"Alright animators we need you to make a 5 minute fight scene."
Animators : "Alright should be pretty eas-"
Director : "And its Levi"
Animators : "..."
on the YMIR OVA timing thing, if you watch this before season 2, you do notice Hange's reactions to hearing Ymirs name in season 2.
Everytime someone in the show says akuma I always think they're saying "Ackermann"
RIP Hange squad: Nifa, Abel, Keiji.
They say never bring a sword to a gun fight
Unless you're Levi Ackerman
The original phrase was don't bring a knife to a swordfight. The phrase kinda breaks down when it was changed to compare guns to swords, which isn't as great a comparison.
Dude isnt that a spoiler?
I feel like this opening got more recognition when the show ended, I’m sure it’ll grow on you guys too
”Don’t bring a sword to a gun fight”
Levi: tsk
S3 is an epic season filled with answers, action and emotion. It made aot one of my top fav series
Oh Red Swan is a very popular opening special the full song. I hope by the end of the series you guys listen to the full songs and rank them that would be a fun video
I love how hyped you guys are for this show! It makes for such a fun and great reaction.
Manga has a levi scene
Animators: ah sh*t here we go again
crazy detail for yall, if you remember the military guy saying that he had to kill a couple trying to flee the walls , then lemme tell you , that couple is armin's parents , i forgot where armin mentioned this info but it is 100% canon
Correct!
Levi's Japanese VA's voice is literal music to my damn ears
I LOVE that you guys keep the intro short - I watch so many reaction channels and having to skip forward 5 minutes every time gets super old - thanks for keeping it short and sweet at the start!
Titan : "Oh f*** it's Levi"
Kenny squad : "Oh f*** it's Levi"
Animators : "Oh f*** it's Levi"
Fangirls: "Oh f*** me Lev...i mean, Oh f*** it's Levi"
Fanboys (including me): "Oh, f**, oh yes, oh pls f** me more
the silence after ep3 is literally mood. the good guys getting shot in the face always turns my stomach a little. but the impact is massive for sure. and levis face when he yells kenny... chills
I swear Mason never salutes when everyone else does😂 I think he might be a spy
This season’s intro is one of my FAVES. It is so amazing and it tells some stories as well. I did not enjoy it at first but then it became a BIG favorite 😊
Hange torturing is scary. She's so smart, I'm sure she knows methods a lot of people don't know.
The first time I saw this intro I had a bit of a panic attack. My initial reaction was "Oh god, theyre gonna kill everyone this season."
CONGRATULATIONS ON 300K SUBS VERY VERY WELL DESERVED!! 🩶🩵💛 Another great reaction from my favorite channel AND GUYS
Being an Ackerman is the equivalent of being an uchiha

@@maxhadrian8680 Play any games then? Being a Uchiha is the equivalent of being a Snake.
@@maxhadrian8680 Being Ackerman and Uchiha is like being Superman on Earth without other superheroes. Is it clearer?
@@maxhadrian8680 lol yeah, not exactly the best analogy for a non-anime crowd.

You're almost right, but Hange and Levi's shocked reaction to the name 'Ymir' is in Southwestward (S2E02), not Warrior.
We're getting 3 episodes in one? Okay my week is made 😭
Hange did freak out in season two when she found out Ymir’s name
Levi is the only reason I kept watching AOT
1:02:02 In case you guys missed it, he was talking about Armin's parent. They both got killed by this Sannes for trying to venture out the walls using balloon. This was already hinted by Armin himself in S1 if i remember right.
I love how Oak still appreciates the new intro😂 it’s definitely not the same vibe as the others but he still went for the air-pointing when the music picks up haha awesome. Cant wait to see his reaction to 4.1 😆
