Tristan Walker: ‘No one wants to fund e-commerce companies anymore’ | Code Commerce 2017

  • When Tristan Walker decided to raise venture capital money for his new startup, a health and beauty company that makes products for people of color, the fact that he was running a tech company - not a retail company - was key.
“When I started, I said we’re a tech company. That’s bullshit,” Walker said at Recode’s Code Commerce conference in Las Vegas. “If you go to any kind of venture capital firm on Sand Hill Road and you say you want to build a retail business, you’re not going to raise any money. So to say that you’re a direct-to-consumer e-commerce business focused on subscriptions ... it allows us to really talk about how we kind of focused on tech.”
That strategy worked. Walker’s startup, Walker & Company, has raised $33 million from well-known VC firms like Andreessen Horowitz and Google Ventures; its flagship brand Bevel, a line of razor blades and lotions for people with “coarse and curly hair,” is sold in major retail stores like Target.

We need more young black guys watching these kind of interviews instead of watching Vlad or wasting time with instagram nonsense. Changes in demographics around the world (US, Africa, Europe as best examples) are some of our biggest chances to start own businesses and prosper for our communities. Tristan dropped so many gems!! I'm truly inspired hearing about his experiences and predictions. He seems to really know his product and market and he's past the romantic silicon valley attitude of many young entrepreneurs who overestimate the role of tech. People still buy offline to a great deal. Last thing: listening to folks like him and Steve Stroute I'm kinda learning that entrepreneurs self restrict their impact because they are kind of indoctrinated with this white/black/brown etc. boxes in their mind!

Great conversation! His opinions on competition and innovation as a tech outsider are very down to earth and practical. This seems like a team i'd like to be a part of. I wish him that Walker & Company is still in business in 200 years

Interviewer: Can't believe you live in Palo Alto.
    Tristan: I can.
Don't do them like that, man.😂

Tristan Walker: Might be a Good man,
Tristan Walker: Might be a "Great man", but the reason why Tristan Walker is being promoted is because "Jason Trishton Walker" was busted and exposed for trying to manipulate the Covid virus to kill more people.. Tristan Walker: is "Good" "Jason Trishton Walker: is "Bad".

Great mind chasing a small idea. Imagine what he could achieve if he broaden his horizon. No doubt solving a customer issue but that mind can have societal impact, not just an itch fixer. Shame

Collins Israel he comes off as a brilliant man with a completely humble and understated style; actually annoying that he needs to be so on point when marketing bozos like the dollar shave guy basically sold their uncles dead stock blades on the basis of a funny video. It’s called racism.
