In the flame rectification circuit, the flame acts as a switch and also an AC to DC rectifier. The circuit board sends out a low amperage AC current through ground which travels through the burners. If there is a flame present, the current will flow through the flame and into the flame senor. The flame sensor wire completes the circuit back to the board, proving flame. The AC current can pass from the burner to the flame sensor, but will not pass back through the opposite way in to the burner when the current alternates and thus the AC current is rectified to DC. We read the flame signal in Micro Amps DC.
Yeah this was pretty good up until that point. Alot of older guys were just taught wrong when flame rectification became common in the early 90's. I've heard that taught wrong a bunch of times. But, you were almost right. The a/c voltage potential exists at the flame sensor and flows from the small flame sensor surface to the larger burner surface. It can only flow in that direction. The rectified dc micro amp current is sensed via the ground by the ifc.
