The marvelous thing of A&C Meet Frankenstein is how everyone except the boys played it straight (at least until Vincent Price's cameo). In particular, Lon Chaney Jr. poured his heart into the pathos of Lyle Talbot delivering hokey lines with sincerity.
the fact that the monsters are played straight really lets the comedians shine. If the monsters were overtly funny it wouldn't have worked. Showed Abbott & Costello meet Frankenstein to my 10 year old granddaughter and she loved it, though she was a little scared in the scene where Costello sits on the monster's lap.
It's such a shame that nobody knows how to do this kind of work that still respects everything it comes from. that's the only way to make disparate things work together. you don't sacrifice to try to force them to fit. I guess 'scooby-doo and guess who' is the closest we get anymore, which is fine aside from the lack of humor
Look at Ghostbusters - a similar project, with comic actors playing against a horrorific background. It worked just fine. But then the remake screwed the pooch.

I also used to adore Harold Loyd, my favorite was the one when he climbed the building and then nearly falls off the clock face, they showed a clip of it at the start of the show, I think it was called The Harold Loyd Show.. oops I got sidetracked, but yep Abbot and Costello were big favourites.
Hats Off Entertainment In the 1980's Paramount considered doing a crossover with Cheech & Chong and Jason Voorhees on account of the fact both franchise's belonged to Paramount at the time, it's a shame that never happened it could have been the 1980's version of these films lol.
Normally when people put in clips of the movies they are talking about in their videos, I don't have much of a reaction to them beyond gaining context. But god damn. Every time you put an Abbot and Costello clip in, I can't help but laugh. Why isn't comedy this good anymore?

Honestly though, I wanna see comedy where anyone could get hurt (and sometimes did), and the wit was intelligent either through the fast-talking character, or though the dim-but-outsmarting character. The fact that Universal Studios had Bud Abbott and Lou Costello under contract and owned the rights to these now classic monsters/monster images they were able to pair up our favorite comedy team with our favorite monsters and of all the comedians A&C were the perfect ones to pair together with Universals finest monsters. A&C Meet Frankenstein is one of the best films of all time.

Crappy feelings.. i see A&C's twisted comedic philosophies in everything now... i cant keep a straight face sometimes.. my aunt an i were at a family funeral and i had bowed and buried in a bible to keep out of trouble. but just as i opened the bible... another bit of dual interpretation that came so fast i burst out laughing which froze the whole congregation..quickly thinking i turned it into a cry for whatever scripture the pastor just read...the congregation clapped and wept and i sank back with bowed head in the bible knowing i now could laugh any time i wanted and started reading a mad magazine somebody gave me... hey... i was only like 12 yrs old ok? i like to think God has a sense of humor... can't remember exact phrase.. it is God's pleasure to hide a thing and (???) to seek it out
Thanks for this loving reminiscence of a truly glorious childhood legacy which even remains today half a century after my childhood has ended. A&c meet Frankenstein truly was an inspired notion, something that would only have happened in the fondest dreams of their fans, and yet somehow managed to be fully realized for all the world to see and believe that. As one friend, Preston jones, has shared with me, a prestigious reviewer commented about this film, "it's no citizen kane, but you'll watch it more often."

It's a great routine made even better by the writers of Animaniacs. Instead of Who's on First, they are at Woodstock and The Who is on stage. Also, bans like Yes and The Band... it's basically the same routine, but with actual bands from that era.

It was a routine I heard as a kid on the Doctor Demento show that came from a comedy album that I think was by... Forgive me, I know a lot about the classic comedians but not as much about the Next Generation... George Carlin? Or Cheech and Chong Maybe?

But I really can't say that it was more clever or original then those who wrote and elaborated on the original routine. Lou Costello actually made up some very funny variations on it when he was on the radio and he and bud, By Request, did the routine once every month on the radio. Was originally adapted for them by John Grant who was their head writer. But there were other, embryonic versions before then.
I'd be nice if we had modern comedy teams like Abbott & Costello, The Three Stooges, and Laurel and Hardy. Reoccurring comedy characters that we're familiar with and can be put in different situations.

Stand up comedy clubs are simply not the same.
The problem for movie producers to do something like this again is finding comedians who can do what Costello did. There really aren’t any. The various ways he played being frightened are so unique to him - the inability to whistle, the ‘uh oh’ baby face look, the slow reveals of the monster. Nobody can pull that all off. And then add the way he could bellow, going from baby talk to huge volume roars instantly. And then there’s his physical humor, which was the thing that created the 3 camera shoot. Yeah, it was invented to deal with Costello. Yeah, I love him. Been part of my life for my whole life. Just introduced a young niece to them a few months ago. She loved it.
He may have originated those reactions in a particular comedic style but others like Don Knotts, Jerry Lewis, Bob Hope and I think Danny Kay have done similarly, but you're right, there aren't many.
Abbott and Costello were addressed by their real names instead of their characters' (Pete Patterson and Freddie Franklin, respectively) as shown on the cast credits in "Abbott and Costello Meet The Mummy." Their radio work was genius and that's how I was first introduced to them. My dad had reel-to-reel tape recordings of some various old radio show acts by many actors and comedians. One was the famous "Who's On First..." routine.
Have you ever read the script? He had good reason to - it barely resembles the finished movie and none of their routines were yet incorporated into it. As originally written, it would have been a stinker.
@@deadpan80 yes, I was going to mention that I've heard this anecdote many times for four and everybody always forgets to mention that was Lou Costello was reacting to was a first draft of the script, before their head writer John Grant and a few rewrites turned it into a classic.

Awesome, Abbott & Costello is my favourite duo and movies! I used to borrow these on cassette from the library as a kid. And I had to do Who's on First for a middle school play, I still recite it in my head time to time.
I sincerely wish that they'd kept Vincent Price as the Invisible Man for more than just the cameo at the end of the first movie. Could you imagine a full feature of Vincent and the boys trying to out-ham one another?

Universal studios Monster movie franchise and their Abbott and Costello movies were the best that the studio had to offer and combining the two was destined to be the sure fire hit that is was and still is to many who appreciate good movies.

Fascinating look at the Universal/Abbott and Costello film franchises! For myself, I liked to imagine what could have been possible if Columbia Pictures could have had one crossover where the Three Stooges had met Batman, which the Columbia had the film rights in the 1940s. Namely, it would have been cute for the Stooges to help the Dynamic Duo in their bumbling ways, and then worked off their debt/or be hidden in the Batcave before they testified in court, with a comic epilogue of them being made useful being a pit crew for the Batmobile.
I first watched Frankenstein meets The Wolfman about 10 years ago and was fully expecting it to be clunky and badly staged in the showdown. It blew me away when you see wolfman leaping at Frankenstien. Such ferocity and speed that totally took me by surprise. The movie poster is also one of my favourites of all time for not only the crossover aspect but the ferocity depicted on it. Its epic.
"ABBOTTT!!" We should run towards the awesome and hilarious encounters our comedy duo had with the one and only group of timeless creatures. Keep it up and stay safe!
This is the first movie I can remember ever seeing! I was 4-5 years old, and caught it on a weekend afternoon creature feature. Sold me for life on classic comedies and classic horror films!

Kevin Smith said a few years back that the Weinstein Company had proposed rebooting this exact type of thing, with Jay and Silent Bob meeting the Universal monsters (Weinstein had access to the monsters via their studio distribution deal with Universal) . I can’t remember the exact reason why but Smith turned it down (I think it was either a problem with Universal owning J&SB if it went forward, or them playing the characters in a full movie written and directed by someone other than Smith).

I miss the days that Abbott & Costello movies were on TV. (Usually on weekend mornings). I think “Hold That Ghost “. Is one of my favorites. I also miss the regular TV show. I think they were at their best during that run, with Mr. Fields and Mike the Cop. And let’s not forget the wonderful Hillary Brooke. Oh , and Stinky and all the assorted men and women that appeared in that show ..
They used to be on every Sunday on WPIX channel 11 from 11:30 - 1:00 (churchtime for many back then) They ran at least from as early as my memory goes back to, mid to late 69's until at least early 80's was the last time I recall watching them, In the Navy. This kind of thing laid groundwork for modern comedies to do Halloween Specials. Roseanne, The Simpsons, Boy Meets World, Community...and they always end up being my favorite episodes.
You have no idea how awesome it was to see this. These movies were such a major part of my childhood. I remember watching Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein on WPIX Channel 11 in NY. Please do Abbott & Costello in Jack and the Beanstalk, that is one of my favorite A&C movies of all time.

Bud was initially against doing these monster movies. He thought of them as sort of pornagraphic and didn't see the appeal. So glad he relented! I have loved Abbott and Costello since I was a little kid. They were the few shows I would watch in black & white as a kid.......now I have so many favorite movies that happen to be black & white. I've grown to appreciate the charm of classic Hollywood films. Great video!
*I finally got to watch Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein so I could watch this video in case of spoilers.* Just the sheer idea of pairing these polar opposite juggernauts was probably a big surprise to me, but the execution was successful nonetheless. I'd definitely wanna see Universal Pictures make another entry to the Universal Monsters brand and maybe do one in the style of the era they were, if possible, for the sake of consistency.
Can't believe I'm just now realizing, "The Honeymooners" were to "The Flinstones" what these classic flicks were to "Scooby Do"! He even sounds like Scooby when he's "scared".

Every great horror comedy takes from this film's model, mixing straight horror with out of their depth goofballs. Tremors, Shaun If The Dead, Army of Darkness, I attribute all of them to Abbot and Costello meeting the Universal Monsters.
I think you better concentrate on the good stuff before dealing with the cheap imitations! And don't forget that almost every comic and comedy team during this time did at least one comedy horror film except Mae West, the Marx Brothers and WC Fields. Even Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd did comedy scare movies.

I really don't try to rate different comedians of the classic era against each other because they're all really so different in their approach and so individual at heart. why do people pit Laurel and Hardy and Abbott and Costello against each other and say one is better than the other as to comedy teams? They're essentially different. L&H work situation comedy and the gags on falling and fouling up the plot and situation versus their characters. Abbott and Costello do routines, they really have not a lot to do with the plot of their films for the most part. Of course there are some exceptions to both.
So, now hear me out: Live Action Scooby Doo crossover movies, like the old "Meet X" stuff they used to do. Especially if we get a new Scooby Doo meets Batman and Robin movie with any of the recent Batman movie settings. And nobody ever comments on the talking Great Dane.

@@jonahmandell509 I know next to nothing about Kiss, but this makes sense to me somehow; they look like chill people. Also, thanks for the tip about the WWE ones. If you have not seen it, my favorite Scooby cross over has to be when they meet Johnny Bravo. I never watched Johnny Bravo b/c his silly jerk energy wasn’t my thing, but it somehow worked with the gang being annoyed by him and him being as big of a scaredy-cat as Scoob & Shag. I think. And it helped that it was at the end of a well liked Scooby VHS.
Way back in the 1980's my first job was working in a movie theatre and the best way I could describe the manager would be as a cross between Bud Abbott and Groucho Marx. The assistant manager was something between Phil Silvers and Jack Benny, and the projectionist could have been Lou Costello. I swear most of our patrons only came to see the shenanigans in the lobby.
I loved Abbot and Costello, the Universal Monsters and the movie Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein and still do even though that at 6:02 in your video I noticed Dracula's reflection in a mirror.
I've never seen an Abbott & Costello movie from start to finish, but I'm realizing from these clips how much Courage the Cowardly Dog's freak outs are based on Costello's.
More like it inspired the concept of Scooby-Doo. Heck, there was “A Gaggle of Galloping Ghosts” where Mystery Inc faced off the Universal Monsters, who turned out to be just one guy.

I'm suddenly reminded....back in the early 1960s, when I was still a kid.....I had box of 'flash cards' or something......of a bunch of the old movie monsters. Probably around the same time I was first discovering those films on weekend television.

There really aren’t any. The various ways he played being frightened are so unique to him - the inability to whistle, the ‘uh oh’ baby face look, the slow reveals of the monster. Nobody can pull that all off.
And then add the way he could bellow, going from baby talk to huge volume roars instantly.
And then there’s his physical humor, which was the thing that created the 3 camera shoot.
Yeah, it was invented to deal with Costello.
Yeah, I love him. Been part of my life for my whole life. Just introduced a young niece to them a few months ago. She loved it.
He may have originated those reactions in a particular comedic style but others like Don Knotts, Jerry Lewis, Bob Hope and I think Danny Kay have done similarly, but you're right, there aren't many.
Abbott and Costello were addressed by their real names instead of their characters' (Pete Patterson and Freddie Franklin, respectively) as shown on the cast credits in "Abbott and Costello Meet The Mummy."
Their radio work was genius and that's how I was first introduced to them. My dad had reel-to-reel tape recordings of some various old radio show acts by many actors and comedians. One was the famous "Who's On First..." routine.
By most accounts, Lou hated the script for the Frankenstein crossover, and thought it would be a disaster. It's great to know that he was wrong.
Have you ever read the script? He had good reason to - it barely resembles the finished movie and none of their routines were yet incorporated into it. As originally written, it would have been a stinker.
@@deadpan80 yes, I was going to mention that I've heard this anecdote many times for four and everybody always forgets to mention that was Lou Costello was reacting to was a first draft of the script, before their head writer John Grant and a few rewrites turned it into a classic.
@@deadpan80 He evidently didn't believe in it even after it was done. But his mother saw it and told him it was the best thing he'd ever done. That convinced him.
This is a great comedy that respects the Monsters and offers chills and fun Bud and Lou are at their best
Awesome, Abbott & Costello is my favourite duo and movies! I used to borrow these on cassette from the library as a kid. And I had to do Who's on First for a middle school play, I still recite it in my head time to time.
I sincerely wish that they'd kept Vincent Price as the Invisible Man for more than just the cameo at the end of the first movie. Could you imagine a full feature of Vincent and the boys trying to out-ham one another?
No one and, I mean no one, could do controlled total comedy fright like Lou Costello. My favorite is the "candle" scene in A. & C. Meet Frankenstein.
They did the same 'bit' even better in HOLD THAT GHOST.
I love those Guys.....When i feel a bit sad or had a bad day. I break open a bottle of good red wine and sit back and enjoy watching an A&C movie and enjoy. 👍😊👍❤. we will never see their like again. TIMELESS COMEDY

Universal studios Monster movie franchise and their Abbott and Costello movies were the best that the studio had to offer and combining the two was destined to be the sure fire hit that is was and still is to many who appreciate good movies.
“Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein” does the whole “Monster Rally” thing better than either “House of Frankenstein” or “House of Dracula”!
These were my introduction to Abbott and Costello and I've been a fan since middle school. In fact, I just finished watching Hold That Ghost before I watched your video

In Abbott/Costello/Frankenstein one, in the scene where Belá, bites the neck of the woman (@06:03), he casts his reflection, in the mirror🧐!!!!

Fascinating look at the Universal/Abbott and Costello film franchises!
For myself, I liked to imagine what could have been possible if Columbia Pictures could have had one crossover where the Three Stooges had met Batman, which the Columbia had the film rights in the 1940s. Namely, it would have been cute for the Stooges to help the Dynamic Duo in their bumbling ways, and then worked off their debt/or be hidden in the Batcave before they testified in court, with a comic epilogue of them being made useful being a pit crew for the Batmobile.
Oh, that could have been great! Shame DC Comics is now part of Warner Bros.
I first watched Frankenstein meets The Wolfman about 10 years ago and was fully expecting it to be clunky and badly staged in the showdown. It blew me away when you see wolfman leaping at Frankenstien. Such ferocity and speed that totally took me by surprise. The movie poster is also one of my favourites of all time for not only the crossover aspect but the ferocity depicted on it. Its epic.
"Freddy vs. Jason" from 2003 was a rare and good sample how this crossovers can work.
Not like in terms of fighting, but more in terms of how their characters work.
You should do a crossover with in praise of shadows talking about a horror comedy movie. That would be awesome

This is the first movie I can remember ever seeing! I was 4-5 years old, and caught it on a weekend afternoon creature feature. Sold me for life on classic comedies and classic horror films!

Gotta admit though, it kinda seemed like Universal was going a route pretty familiar to modern audiences, just starting to crank stuff out.. One can easily imagine an alternate timeline where we started getting Abbott and Costello Go Somewhere Cheap
Kevin Smith said a few years back that the Weinstein Company had proposed rebooting this exact type of thing, with Jay and Silent Bob meeting the Universal monsters (Weinstein had access to the monsters via their studio distribution deal with Universal) . I can’t remember the exact reason why but Smith turned it down (I think it was either a problem with Universal owning J&SB if it went forward, or them playing the characters in a full movie written and directed by someone other than Smith).

Really used to enjoy these, my sister and I used to rent it from the video store every other time we visited my Grandmother.
I don’t think any movie has made me laugh harder than the first time I saw Hold That Ghost.
I miss the days that Abbott & Costello movies were on TV. (Usually on weekend mornings). I think “Hold That Ghost “. Is one of my favorites. I also miss the regular TV show. I think they were at their best during that run, with Mr. Fields and Mike the Cop. And let’s not forget the wonderful Hillary Brooke. Oh , and Stinky and all the assorted men and women that appeared in that show ..
They used to be on every Sunday on WPIX channel 11 from 11:30 - 1:00 (churchtime for many back then)
They ran at least from as early as my memory goes back to, mid to late 69's until at least early 80's
was the last time I recall watching them, In the Navy. So funny "Any galoot who wants a dispute gets it in the neck"

This kind of thing laid groundwork for modern comedies to do Halloween Specials. Roseanne, The Simpsons, Boy Meets World, Community...and they always end up being my favorite episodes.
You have no idea how awesome it was to see this. These movies were such a major part of my childhood. I remember watching Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein on WPIX Channel 11 in NY. Please do Abbott & Costello in Jack and the Beanstalk, that is one of my favorite A&C movies of all time.

This film firmly established the framework for successful horror comedy. Keep the humor snappy, play the horror straight.
Bud was initially against doing these monster movies. He thought of them as sort of pornagraphic and didn't see the appeal. So glad he relented! I have loved Abbott and Costello since I was a little kid. They were the few shows I would watch in black & white as a kid.......now I have so many favorite movies that happen to be black & white. I've grown to appreciate the charm of classic Hollywood films. Great video!

Just the sheer idea of pairing these polar opposite juggernauts was probably a big surprise to me, but the execution was successful nonetheless.
I'd definitely wanna see Universal Pictures make another entry to the Universal Monsters brand and maybe do one in the style of the era they were, if possible, for the sake of consistency.
Meet Frankenstein was my favorite as a kid, but the pick & burger scenes in The Mummy are my 2 favorite scenes of the pair

Every great horror comedy takes from this film's model, mixing straight horror with out of their depth goofballs. Tremors, Shaun If The Dead, Army of Darkness, I attribute all of them to Abbot and Costello meeting the Universal Monsters.
If you can, cover The Bowery Boys Meet the Monsters. It was an attempt to ride all the “Abbot and Costello meet” movies

I think you better concentrate on the good stuff before dealing with the cheap imitations! And don't forget that almost every comic and comedy team during this time did at least one comedy horror film except Mae West, the Marx Brothers and WC Fields. Even Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd did comedy scare movies.

I really don't try to rate different comedians of the classic era against each other because they're all really so different in their approach and so individual at heart. why do people pit Laurel and Hardy and Abbott and Costello against each other and say one is better than the other as to comedy teams? They're essentially different. L&H work situation comedy and the gags on falling and fouling up the plot and situation versus their characters. Abbott and Costello do routines, they really have not a lot to do with the plot of their films for the most part. Of course there are some exceptions to both.
So, now hear me out: Live Action Scooby Doo crossover movies, like the old "Meet X" stuff they used to do.
Especially if we get a new Scooby Doo meets Batman and Robin movie with any of the recent Batman movie settings. And nobody ever comments on the talking Great Dane.

If you have not seen it, my favorite Scooby cross over has to be when they meet Johnny Bravo. I never watched Johnny Bravo b/c his silly jerk energy wasn’t my thing, but it somehow worked with the gang being annoyed by him and him being as big of a scaredy-cat as Scoob & Shag. I think. And it helped that it was at the end of a well liked Scooby VHS.
There is a Supernatural and Scooby-Doo cross over. Might not be what you are thinking of, but i highly enjoyed it.
My favorite episode had to be the crossover they did with the Addams Family.
I have always been partial to the Bob Hope and Bing Crosby pairing in the Road To movies they did.
Way back in the 1980's my first job was working in a movie theatre and the best way I could describe the manager would be as a cross between Bud Abbott and Groucho Marx. The assistant manager was something between Phil Silvers and Jack Benny, and the projectionist could have been Lou Costello. I swear most of our patrons only came to see the shenanigans in the lobby.

I've never seen an Abbott & Costello movie from start to finish, but I'm realizing from these clips how much Courage the Cowardly Dog's freak outs are based on Costello's.

More like it inspired the concept of Scooby-Doo. Heck, there was “A Gaggle of Galloping Ghosts” where Mystery Inc faced off the Universal Monsters, who turned out to be just one guy.

I'm suddenly reminded....back in the early 1960s, when I was still a kid.....I had box of 'flash cards' or something......of a bunch of the old movie monsters. Probably around the same time I was first discovering those films on weekend television.
I too would love to see more movies like this. I imagine an epic monster team up where some one has to assemble a team to fight a 2nd evil team that has every sci-fi icon on the plate. but its also a comedy. the last time some thin g was even close to this was Monster Squad,
When I was growing up Channel 11 WPIX NY showed Abbott and Castello Movies every Saturday Morning. My brother and I always enjoyed the monster movies the best...
In the current era of remakes to get nostalgia money, I doubt movies would chance a strange combination like this anytime soon.
