Hai, I was a newbie at Gimp so I really needed help, but I looked at your vids and you helped me. ALOT. I was completely lost with knowing how to use GIMP and now I know everything!! Thanks bro!
Good thinking in using the cheeseburger analogy to demonstrate layers. It took me a while to figure layers out when I was first introduced to them, so having a real-world, tangible, example piece as a concept idea is a great starting point that I wished I would have had. Good stuff.
I love all of these videos! They're so helpful! Well, considering I've had Gimp for about a year now with absolutley no clue what I was doing... ^^" You are very good at explaining this! Going to your website as soon as I watch all the lessons on here! :D
I have watched different videos all day and This one Helped me to learn about the layer. Thank you so Much.. also the select and none is exactly what i needed to know.. also the center point.. you are the bomb !
I am just getting more pumped as I see more videos-Man I need to know how to draw a picture of an onion so it has all the rings but still is on the same layer so you got me hooked now!!! :), Thanks for all your hard work putting these together....
Thanks so much for these fab tutorials. I teach Photoshop but have been asked by a student to teach Gimp. Have never used Gimp before but must say, I'm hooked. Have spent about 2 hours trying to find tutorials that don't put me to sleep, pull my hair out, or just confuse me totally (which is rather difficult as Gimp is very similar to PS :) )... finally I found you. Phew !! Thanks a mill. ;)
Excellent tutorial, clear simple instruction, I was visualizing cutting and pasting a collage of stacked photographs before but your burger is very ergonomic thanks.
good job. almost everyone can relate to food so its awesome you made this easy to understand and you didn't overwhelm people with to many options. sweet build thanks :)
Well, I knew nothing before your vid, now , at least I can attack the program and play with it and know a little of what I am doing or trying to do. Nicely explained for any beginner, thanks !
These tutorials are fantastic, but hard to follow if you dont have the side bars set up. I was hoping to learn how to set those up. I have the bar to the lef, the toolbar, but i dont know how to set up the layers box on your right. It turned the whole creation, i didnt know how to select one layer. Sorry, im real new to gimp, i have 2.8 version. If you have tutorial on setting up gimp for first time users, make docks, lock them etc please let me know. Thank you, your doing an excellent job!!
Really well done.. One thing I've always wondered is .. sometimes one layer gets set as background.. and it is not necessarily the layer I want as background.. can't figure out how to re-assign the background layer.
Thank you for the videos. This is my third video your channel and 30 min on Gimp in my life. I really want to use this program to add wallpapers into Logos. Can you direct me on how to do this please? Anyone's help is much appreciated.
Hey Joseph, That depends a lot on how complicated the background is honestly. Erasing the box itself would prove difficult. Gimp, and any other photo program is very good at adding information, but not so great at removing it. I think if I wanted to create a floating lamp, I would take a picture of the lamp on top of the box, and then take another in the same position without the box or lamp and then combine the two together. visit my ask gimped page on my website and try asking there.
The layers box can be wherever it likes! The issue is that holding control and shift doesn't do for me what it does for you - it does not center the circle or fix its aspect ratio. I have to click the boxes instead.
You're welcome Wingman4life1! Start by watching the rest of my gimp for beginners videos. Once you learn the basics, search the web and find something you like and want to try to make. Try to figure out how to do it, and don't hesitate to ask me if you can't figure it out.
Sure do! A complete list of my gimp video tutorials for beginners can be seen at my website (mentioned in the description) Click on "gimp for beginners" at the top of the page.
The "background layer" that you see when you create a new file is no different than any other layer you create. It just happens to be named "background."
Thanks very much, really good tutorial :) - I tried installing the mask-creating python extension thing but got nowhere with it. Do you know if it's compatible with 2.8.14? I've never installed a plugin before, maybe I'm doing something wrong. :( I would be very grateful if you can offer any advice.
How do you prevent layers from having boundaries? and why would you want boundaries anyway? Photoshop doesn't ues Boundaries. It's like having limited invisible walls if you move the layer. For example draw an object on a new layer, move it to the side where you'd want to draw another object (on the same layer) and oh... you can't because its outside of the boundary? Can't understand this at all. :S :S :S Anyway to get rid of boundaries completely so it behaves more like photoshop without limitations to draw in layers?
Sorry to bother you, but I'm really getting frustrated looking all over the internet to find out how to do this...do you know how to pick a section of picture, say an eye for instance, and move it and rotate it. Can you also replicate and mirror that section so you can have two perfect eyes?
Hey silly goose, I think you're going to want to combine what you learned in this tutorial with what I teach in my layer mask lesson. Let me know if you need more help after watching that lesson.
Styl Meter Her point is that when you cook a hamburger you usually put the cheese over the burger so it will melt a bit... The lettuce comes after.... So the order should be burger->cheese->lettuce. Unless the cooker meant to have an non-melted cheese on it... PS: We're just poking fun though... LoL ... it's not like this is in any way relevant. Edit: I just noticed he addresses that at the end of the video hahah

Thank you so much for this tutorial. I now have a better understanding of layers and selections. Looking forward to Lesson 4! :)
Thanks a million for the tutorial.....just what I needed to get a jump start on GIMP
I have watched different videos all day and This one Helped me to learn about the layer. Thank you so Much.. also the select and none is exactly what i needed to know.. also the center point.. you are the bomb !
Awesome tutorials man! I even learned a new trick or two and a better understanding and I've been using gimp for a while!
I am just getting more pumped as I see more videos-Man I need to know how to draw a picture of an onion so it has all the rings but still is on the same layer so you got me hooked now!!! :), Thanks for all your hard work putting these together....

I learned so much from this! Thank you so much!
tnx Im trying to learn gimp and this really helps me

@vSuperFailz like...how do you display a grid for reference? Click view>>>show grid
@vSuperFailz In order to activate the grid, you have to first have a file opened. Does that fix your issue?
Really well done.. One thing I've always wondered is .. sometimes one layer gets set as background.. and it is not necessarily the layer I want as background.. can't figure out how to re-assign the background layer.
For me, these options are a checkbox in the toolbox to the left. It took me forever to figure this out too!
Dude, you're a life saver!
Check his previous tutorials. I think the 2nd one where he explains the ways to get different things to show up. idk, maybe its the 1st
Thank you for the videos. This is my third video your channel and 30 min on Gimp in my life. I really want to use this program to add wallpapers into Logos. Can you direct me on how to do this please? Anyone's help is much appreciated.
Hey Alice,
My first lesson goes over how to change the interface, including how to move the layers box over :)
Excellent tutorial - thanks

Thanks. But how were the bottom bun, sandwich, lettuce etc created in the dockable dialogue box? We're beginners !
woaaa such a great explanation!

Hey GimpedTutorials. I love your videos but i need to layer pictures ontop of one another.. how do i do that? Thanks.
Thanks! great tutorial.

I am having a hard time placing the objects in the center. How do you know where exactly to place it?

The "background layer" that you see when you create a new file is no different than any other layer you create. It just happens to be named "background."
Hey Dragonfly, did you watch the video all the way through? I teach you how to create a new layer at 7:21
Thanks very much, really good tutorial :) - I tried installing the mask-creating python extension thing but got nowhere with it. Do you know if it's compatible with 2.8.14? Fantastic tutorial! Thank you for posting! My wife wants to know why there's no bacon on the burger. Hopefully that's in a future lesson.
Cool! Thanks.

This is quite helpful even tho' it's old :)

Hey silly goose, I think you're going to want to combine what you learned in this tutorial with what I teach in my layer mask lesson. Let me know if you need more help after watching that lesson.
Thanks, this was really easy to understand. Why do I feel hungry though? :)
@day2musiclovers check out my first lesson. It will show you how to do all of that!
I heard they even made a Linux version of this software
Watching this one makes me hungry :P
wow the way youmade the tutoral is very artistic, imhigh as fuck
Not knocking your video because it was really good and helpful but I thought the cheese goes on the burger.

Styl Meter

Cheese makes him happy
Ogres are like onions. They have layers.
I wish you would have edited an actual photo with people or land using layers.
Actually this is really better cuz its based on the three selections so the burger is perfect for tutorials
cakes have layers
I know how to hide the bun if you know what im saying
+Hans CakeStealer you almost can't see the meat anymore
Looks like a Wendy's burger :P
you forgot pickles
I'm the pickle, it's not fair I tell you.
Cheese and meat
You are rocking my clock Larry.
