Yamaha FZ6 Crank Position Sensor Diagnosis [Code 12] Error

  • In this video I will be showing you the location and how to check the resistance of the crank position sensor on my 2007 Yamaha FZ6. The sensor should measure between 248-372 Ohms of resistance when measuring the sensor at 20 degrees celsius. If the sensor measures less or more it should be replaced. It is also worth inspecting your pick up rotor for irregularities when considering replacing the crank sensor. A bad crank position sensor with throw code 12 on your dash causing the bike to not start.

    Love the videos and love this bike. I have been having running issues with mine. Recently I got it to start on starting fluid so I am pointing to a fuel issue. I bought an adapter for a fuel pressure tester. Hopefully it’s my fuel pump and not something worse.

    • @Calvinm
      @Calvinm  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The fuel pump is audible when it's priming. If you can't hear the pump kick on when you flick the red handle bar switch to the run position then something isn't right. Best of luck!

    I have the same bike and I’m having issues with it shutting off while I’m riding then it won’t crank at all sometimes it will cut on but I will ride for 3 minutes then it wil shut off again what can be the cause?

    • @Calvinm
      @Calvinm  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This sound like a kill switch is failing intermittently. An issue like this can be hard to trouble shoot but I’d recommend looking into your kill switch on the right side handle bar grip and the side stand switch. If either of those vibrate into an “open circuit” condition the bike will shut off because it thinks you’ve put your side stand down while in gear or have flipped the red kill switch to off. Literally shake the bike, wiring and side stand while you have the bike idling in gear to see if you can reproduce the problem. Then bust out the multimeter and start probing wires to to pin point the problem. If the bike throws any codes (check engine lights) use those to guide your search as well! Best of luck!

    Hello Hello Calvin, I have a problem with my 20070 fz6. It shows me check code 12. It gives me .278 ohms and the code is not removed and the motorcycle does not send a signal and does not turn on. What do you think it could be? I would appreciate it very much. Thank you. I await your response on the possible causes.

    Hi there have 2007 FZ6 had issue of no spark currently...checked all Ignition coils,CPS voltage all other sensors fine..I couldn't see any error codes due to meter display gone..
    Immobilizer issue will create no spark issue?
    Because fuel priming ok..and able to crank also..only the issue no spark...please need your advice to check further

    Please help me if you would. I have a problem after winter staying. My bike has started normally, but every time when he gets hot(about 1 min.), he does not hold the idle, he has stopped every time. When he gets hot, throttle opening does not affect... What have I done: I have been cleaning the idle sensor, changing the fuel pump, changing the coolant sensor, checking the throttle position sensor on your advice. The built-in diagnostic does not display any problems, and all built-in checks on the dashboard have been done successfully.

    • @Calvinm
      @Calvinm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would check the crank position sensor when cold and then also check it when hot. Hopefully it measures out of spec when the bike is hot and not running right. Also worth checking would be your ignition coils. Sometimes when they heat up they can malfunction when they’re on the verge of being completely broken. Also check your intake air pressure sensor. It’s harder to probe because you need to cut into the casing out of signal wire to measure the output voltage but it can be done. I’ll link a video to it below. Good luck!

    Sometimes this code has nothing to do with the sensor. It popped up when my bike stood for a while in misty rain, prior to that there were no symptoms of problems and the battery was just fine. I was able to push start it and ride back home and after that everything went back to normal. I suspect that the moisture made its way either to the sensors or to the starter relays. Oftentimes this code appears due to the fact that the starter relay is defective.

    • @Calvinm
      @Calvinm  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ya it sounds like some moisture got into that circuit causing the error for you. Good to know!

    • @h4xi0rek
      @h4xi0rek 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Calvinm found out the reason - the rubber covering the starter motor cable connection was somehow taken off. I suspect that the moisture caused a short circuit which resulted in the error.

    • @Calvinm

      No you do not have to drain the oil. It helps if you have the bike on its side stand so the oil is tipped away from that side of the engine.

      @@Calvinm sorry i mean using a peak voltage adapter. Had one ckp sensor that passed the resistence test, But would give very low peak voltage, around 0.28 volts compare to other Inés that gave more than 1.5 volts, Yamaha manuals won't give You this parameters.

  • @timolivier4692
    @timolivier4692 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I measured my cps from yamaha fz8, the manual says it should be between 228 - 342 ohms. Now i measured 430 ohm. Is it possible that my bike got intermittent starting problems due this, or is the difference to small? Sometimes i got error code 12, but also a bunch of other random codes +engine check light. Im deciding if its the cps or something with my ecu... The problem happens not all the time.

    • @Calvinm
      @Calvinm  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It certainly is possible that your crank sensor being out of range is causing this intermittent starting issue! I would replace it to rule it out of the equation.

    Hey bro, I have an old 97 triumph Street I can't get it to start I bought it for 200 bucks and I got to figure this thing out. Anyways mainly it was bad fuel, but I can't get it to start! But when I take the fuel air box off and spray starter fluid it cranks right up and runs sounds snappy. So I wouldn't think it's the crank position sensor would you? But when I put the fuel rail back on and although it seems like the pressure is not too good but the injector squirt and it looks like they're squirting in sequence when I crank it. Could it still be the crankshaft sensor even though it runs with just starting fluid

    • @Calvinm
      @Calvinm  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it runs with starting fluid but doesn’t running on its own injectors that points towards a fueling issue. A bad crank position sensor wouldn’t allow the bike to run well with starting fluid or its own fueling system. It doesn’t hurt to throw a multimeter on the crank position sensor just to check though. Good luck!

    • @julieoliver8170
      @julieoliver8170 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Calvin. I just found out the bike was made for England and it's here in the United States so parts are a pitch. And it's a 97 so they stopped making a lot of electronic sensors and stuff. Anyways thank you I just wish I knew how much ohms the crank sensor is supposed to run on them trying to do the research it's hard to find. But I appreciate the help that was my conclusion too I ordered the new fuel pump and a new pressure regulator so hopefully that does the trick I can't wait to get on this thing and wrap it.
