    It’s all so sad. 😥

I had a semi-tame pair of black birds in my garden. Their only chick was taken by a sparrowhawk right in front of them. It even started eating as they went mad trying to mob it and save the chick. I chased the sparrowhawk off to save them the trauma of watching. Anyway, it was totally apparent they were depressed for at least 3 days. Their behaviour and demeanour totally changed. My father who always dismisses the idea of animals having feelings etc was pretty amazed seeing them so depressed.

They do both look distressed , Louis pulling up branches as if to look, or cover up the body.
I hope Louis will take the small body away, there are health concerns leaving it there.

They pretty much just go on regardless and see it as one less mouth to feed. They are just chatting, doing housework and wanting fish!!

Yes I believe they are.. Cats cry and look for kittens that have been taken away.. Birds screech and continue to for a while when a predator takes a baby. It's no different as far as I can see.. Us humans are not so special as to be the only ones to display feelings...

Certainly looks and sounds like it - and I guess most animals have a drive to nurture their young otherwise it would be a barren old planet - they're calling him. luckily they and we still have our hands and minds full looking out for the other two!

It does appear that they are reacting to the loss of the littlest Bob.
I hope Louis removes the remains soon as Dorcha doesn't need to be constantly seeing him. Poor parents....

Either parent might remove it, think of Aila in 2919 carrying off the half-hatched egg, or it might just get buried in the vegetation on the nest. When the platform was constructed on nest one which was an ancient wild nest, they found the remains of many small chicks in the debris.

@@unagault2360 hi Una, I’m glad to say sad little bob isn’t visible now, has been gradually buried in the vegetation at the side of the nest where s/he ended up.

Pity that Louis hadn’t tidied up those cot rails earlier…

Or Dorcha, for that matter. But bob3 was always going to struggle, such a size and age difference to bob1, and with bob2 there as well. Means those two have a better chance now, just as well with this foul weather.

Devastated, cannot get in to comment on other website. Hardly slept a wink last night.so sad, thinking I cannot handle the bad stuff. Dorcha could have done better, methinks. ❤ Carolyn cbwood01

It is sad, but for Dorcha and Louis it’s just life. If the chick isn’t in the nest cup and gaping for food, it will be ignored. Just like a mama cat or dog who ignores the weakest in a litter the better to give the stronger ones a good chance.

It's a bird. Its actions are pretty much purely instinctual. People just have a tendency to anthropomorphize for some reason.

Must admit my girlfriend and I thought it looked like he was smashing up the gaff in distress while Dorcha tried to console him 😂
