    I never understand the phenomena until I live there for 3 months and made some local Italian friends. One of my local Venetian friends is a geologist and he specialised in mineral study. He said to me, Venice is fighting for existence since the day the first church stone was erected in Torcello, which was kind of the oldest (by some measures) buildings in Venice. He taught me that Venice was founded as a lagoon. Not an island. The historical name of Venice is (forgive me if I pronounce or spell in wrongly), Laguna Veneta. Lagoon is not meant to stay. Lagoon is not the same with island. While island is land (sand or stone) that was elevated to a certain level. Lagoon means muddy and washable land sediment, and they not usually stay in place. Venice was built on top of a lagoon. In order to build the buildings, they have to use special technique to make sure the lagoon stays intact and not washed away. And I strolled in the so called Venice city hall or library, I was shown by my friends that the old Venetian Kingdom kept a record of their measurement of water levels and they basically regulates law to make sure the construction of buildings only enforce the lagoon. The wooden based technique can last indefinitely. And whoever does not follow the technique will be punished.
    And back to the definition of a lagoon itself, it is inevitable that Venice will be sinking. Because the nature of the land itself is not stable. The heavy rain, the wind and the rising sea level just make things worst. From time to time, the heavy rain will flood the city and things get extra worse when the Adriatic sea is in high tide. The Acqua Alta will inevitably occur. And the question of Venice sinking is not a matter of if, my friend said, but when. He also showed me the underground of the Holy St Mark Basilica. And the most underground chamber to store the body of St Mark himself was flooded. The body was moved upstairs and the chamber wasnt used since then.
    I hope Venice can solve the sinking city problem. Maybe not. As I was told, it is first and foremost, a lagoon. But I hope it wont sink. Best regards from me to Venice. My home country is also sinking. But not because it is a lagoon. Because Singapore is located below sea levels, every monsoon season, some coastal and city centre areas are flooded. 😓

    Reading some of the comments below are unbelievable! the "acqua alta" is a seasonal phenomenon it's just that this one is the worst in 22 years the city floods every 3 years if you walk round st marks square you will see the boards stacked up ready for use Venice has been sinking since the day it was built it's a beautiful city that is sinking which is a reminder of our mortality

      They're already pushed out of their homes by overcrowded tourism And Capitalism! Now they can boat all the way to their rooms! *NO JOKE!*

    • @mnizammasood
      @mnizammasood 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@abby-a Acqua Alta is a seasonal thing. No one can ever predict it. Or maybe they can predict it, but it is still 50 50. Locals dont consider Acqua Alta as flood. It is simple bad weather and natural combinations. When the rain is too heavy and the Adriatic Sea is in high tide, AA will happen. It can happen in any season, even in mid July. When I live in Italy a couple of years back, it was April till June. And AA happened in mid May. It took 5 hours for the water level to go down, because the Adriatic tide is low too. And the June AA was the worse I saw. It took 2 days for the water level to go down. Thats because the rain continued pouring for days, so even the Adriatic sea tide is low, the canals are overflooded. If youre heading there, rest assured. Just hope you dont have to face AA. It is unpleasant. But you know, locals treat it like a daily thing. We even have a hot choc and croissant in Piazza San Marco while dipping out feet in the water.

    All of the ground floor shops and restaurants should only be allowed to remain if they are able to flood without damage. It might be better without all of the tourist shops anyway. They could be relocated to the second level. Or create a new shopping zone. Perhaps a beautiful mezzanine level could be built in some instances. The vacated properties would make excellent storage for boats with large areas of new circulation corridors through the stone columns. Come on you wonderful Italian designers....continue designing Venice! Don't let the politicians waste anymore money on hopeless engineering.
