  • A month ago I went out to a good spot I know with the sole intention of taking Insects in flight shots. In this video I share some tips and settings which I hope will help you when attempting this type of photography. It isn't easy and we need all the help we can get and I find that the Pro Capture feature on my OM1 really helps to make the nearly impossible just a little easier!! 😉😜
    Thanks for watching. Please leave a comment and if you are new, please consider subscribing!🙏

    Hi all. Thanks for stopping by,unfortunately I stupidly uploaded a few photos that I edited in low resolution. I usually edit a large file and a smaller file and posted some of the lower resolution shots for this video so they don’t look as sharp as they were. You’ll have to trust me 😀😀

      Thanks so much David. On my new computer it was the only B roll I had. For that month I didn’t do any photography, just played football in the park with my kids👍😀🙏⚽️

    That as really good Richard. I'm a Canon user, and am so jealous of the Procapture. Maybe in the R5-II? You got lot's of great shots. I like the 1st one, the bee with wing blur. By the way, it is actually a fly, a hover fly. They mimic bees to put birds off. I used to impress neighbourhood kids by catching and holding them with my bare hounds, impervious to the "sting". I became an entomologist.

      Thanks so much Scott. Yes someone else pointed out earlier in the comments that it was a Hover fly. Best thing to do when watching my vids is to just assume that the names I give are almost certainly incorrect. You are also way braver than me I can’t touch anything that moves. My kids pick up anything and everything but me…I’m a big baby. R5 looks an amazing camera, add pro capture to it and you would have some camera. Thanks again and enjoy the rest of your day 🙏😀👍

    Lovely video as always Richard - I've been meaning to try the OM-1 with dragonflies & butterflies, so this is a great reference point! Shall be giving it a go once the UK starts to warm up again next year

      Thanks Marc. Do you not see Dragonflies and butterflies over the winter in the U.K?

    Fabulous images Richard , I don’t use pro capture nearly enough, mind you it seems to be dull every time I’m out with my camera👍

      Thank you. Yes you often need nice light to use it. Let’s hope you can get some decent light sometime soon so you can use it. 🙏😁👍

    Thanks for the video. I have had my OM-1 for around 6 months and tried pro capture for the first time a week ago. Got a couple of great shots of a rainbow bee eater. Unfortunately a long way off but nonetheless a couple of keepers. I like the in camera editing. I have been using OM Workspace. Still not sure how to get the best out of OM Workspace. Thanks.

    How do you set the aperture when you are already in shutter priority mode?
    Thanks for the tutorial!

      @RichardCookphotography  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi and thank you. In this video I was always in manual mode which means I can change Aperture and shutter speed at any time. Hope this helps🙏😁

    Great to see this. PeoCapture SH2 is mostly about birds on youtube so i loved to see an insects video. I am thinking about buying an om-1 and 40-150 f2.8 lens for in flight butterfly photography this summer so your video has been inspirational.

    Great shots!! Will definitely try. Do you use back button focus with pro capture? Or do you just use the shutter release for focus? Thanks.

    • @RichardCookphotography
      @RichardCookphotography  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi and thank you. I just use the shutter button with Pro capture. I always used to use BBF with my old DSLRs but just use the shutter button for all my shots now.

    Great set of images Richard especially as it was so windy, an Insect photographers nightmare. As an aside the first picture looked like a Hoverfly and not a Bee, am I just being pedantic? A great set up to get brilliant Insect images.

    • @RichardCookphotography
      @RichardCookphotography  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Lawrence. The first rule of following my channel is that if I say something especially in regards to names of insects assume that I have got it wrong because more than likely I have. It probably is a Hoverfly, lazy IDing on my part. No, you are not being pedantic and thank you for pointing it out😀👍 Take care🙏

    Your videos are always entertaining and contain a few gems from your experience using the OM1. It may well be prudent to use another method for tethering your camera body to what is a heavy lens. The weight of the lens is swinging on the mount between lens and camera body and thus there is a real chance of damaging the mount. A better anchor point is the foot on the 300mm lens. keep on cranking those vids out!

    • @RichardCookphotography
      @RichardCookphotography  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you and good point about the lens and the potential strain on the mount. I probably should use the foot to hold the lens. Something to think about. Thanks again and have a great day🙏😀👍

    Another awesome series of shots I really loved them. I was pretty sure in my mind on the Nikon Z8 and 180-600m zoom for the new year. Everytime I see one of your videos do I really need a full frame or a crop sensor that gets the job done.. Thinking about the OM-1 and 300mm F4 combo (with a 2x and 1.4x) for a while. Nice and light more likely to go out and use it.

    • @RichardCookphotography
      @RichardCookphotography  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you so much. I still have my Nikon stuff and have definitely been looking at the Z8 but have asked myself a number of times is it going to help me get better shots than what i get now. There may be some situations where it will but there are other situations where my M43 holds the advantage I feel. The weight and size is such a pro for M43. Good luck with your decision😀👍

    Nice photos! How do you focus what settings do you use? Thank you

    • @RichardCookphotography
      @RichardCookphotography  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think I was focusing on the flower and then when the butterfly takes off or arrives ...I then press the shutter button. I used the large box focus area and about 1/4000. Thank you

    Nice shots! I have been waiting in vain for a firmware update from OM System which would add insect eye autofocus like Sony, Fuji, Canon and others have done. For someone who shoots a lot of insects that would make my OM1 perfect!
