  • SPARK CAB - VIDEO NO.5
Addressing the hiss. If your cab is producing a loud low frequency hum (not a hiss) then you likely have a ground loop issue. If your cab is motorboating you may also have an issue. As I explain in the video - please trouble shoot any issues you have extensively first. Understanding the way your gear and cables are interacting with your power is very important.

I have Spark CAB plugged it into a filtering power conditioner - it is not NORMAL to have 20 db of white noise at 12 inches from the speaker with nothing pluged in and volume at 0 - (what I measured with mine). I have yamaha FRFR speakers - they are dead quiet . The white noise has nothing to do with the power supply source - the hum when you turned up the volume might( I don't have that issue). The white noise is a design flaw. IMHO as a retired Electrical Engineer who worked for decades doing audio development in consumer electronics at Intel - positive Grid cut corners to hit the price point.

The reality is, when played at its intended volume, background noise isnt noticeable. Its no more noisy than my class a/b mesa boogie poweramp worth nearly 5 times the amount

I have the Spark 40 and was considering buying the Cab, but will look at other options now. I don’t want to risk buying one with hope the noise is minimal.

great video (and set of videos for this cab). You mentioned you’re plugging into a Furman power conditioner. Which one are you using? They seem to be pricey, so not sure i want to get the conditioner, but may invest in a cheaper furman power strip that seems to reduce some hum as well (though likely not as much as conditioner). Cheers, and thanks again for all your videos. You rip on guitar by the way!

I will send mine back because of the unacceptable hum issue and the very unprofessional handling of this issue by PG. Happy with the Mini and Go though.
A FRFR is the same as a normal PA system, in my opinion, so I have ordered the JBL EON 710 now as a) the digital amp should not have a noise issue and b) it has a built-in DSP/EQ (need that to get the optimum sound in my sofa-practicing setup in my living room :-))
OK, it is a "little" more expensive but after the PG Cab disappointment I needed to make a "frustration" purchase...

I took a video of my bands expensive yamaha pa monitors and the hiss was twice as loud. The thing is, you dont hear it when playing at band volume. Why get the cab if not to play loud. As i demonstrate in the video, the noise doesnt increase as the volume of the unit is increased. I could be one of the lucky few however, others in our spark group have reported no noise.

@@papalytic7767this is what everyone else is hearing. Is this what you are hearing? Would you call this "natural hiss?" th-cam.com/video/ebZbC4QJbqc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ywoKkLwJWa3A5SIF I have two of these that respond the same way and the "hiss" gets louder as I roll up the volume.

It's junk and going back. I have never had any of my amps hum like this. I have an electronics engineering degree, it is a ground fault loop or shoddy components period. It's junk and going back. I don't care if your pa makes noise or not. I did not purchase it.

@13druber ok, you were possibly an unlucky one. Mine doesn't hum and the hiss is minimal. I guess im the lucky one. If i had your education id fix it myself. Im a guitar tech. I spent $5k on a faulty ibanez jem, fixed it myself, documented it and contacted ibanez about it. They gave me $500 back. More than covered my time. Now i have a perfect guitar. Just saying.

I have the same issue. This is most likely transistor junction (Johnson) noise which is common in Class D amplifiers that are poorly designed. I have Yamaha powered speakers with no noise, and Behringer powered speakers that have varying levels of noise with each unit. Hopefully Positive Grid will determine the circuit causing the issue and develop an updated amplifier for the cab.

Isn’t the hiss the result of the amp’s output not being line level but rather headphone level?

It makes the noise with no amp or cables connected. The noise is about the cab. I have good cables and have tried other power sources. I have never owned an amp that makes as much noise just idling before and I have owned many Amps over the years.

    • @papalytic7767
      @papalytic7767  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

As i mentioned in the video. The noise reduced once the spark 40 was turned on and connected. With the cab above volume 2 or 3 any white noise should not be perceivable, also that noise wont be transferred to a connected p.a system. If you are getting intolerable noise you may have a dud cab or you are getting interference from other electronic devices as otherd have discovered to be the case. Some have told me that simply by moving the cab away from certain electronic equipment it greatly improved the noise issue

@@papalytic7767sorry, my friend just got the cab and we tryed it out and when it got louder and he used some fuzz it started to make this weird noise. We pulled the grill off to see if the speaker cone hits the grill and we found that on the inside is a huge metal piece on the grill under the cloth and that makes the noise. It starts to vibrate under some higher volume and distortion.

It's not even the problem people are having with Positive Grid Spark 40-Watt amp. Pure white notice comes out of the amp and it's from the impute jack board. The jack needs to be replaced it's faulty. At the end of the day Positive Grid Spark 40-Watt has a chep impute board that fails and need to be changed. The issue is finding someone to fix it that doesn't cost an are & a leg or that is familiar enough to do the board swap!
