Um, here's the rub. Its fine if that's what they do it Hillsdale. It is a PRIVATE university the accepts no government money. I sent to FSU. It was not political leaning either way. Yes. Perhaps, New College was too liberal and left leaning. And this is IMPORTANT...as a Republican since Reagan (longer than Don and Ron) and native and lifelong Floridian and a libertarian, even I know that the correct solution is you bring in the school in line as neutral, like the other state universities. You don't get to remake the college in your own image and pin the needle to the right. At least not without the people's consent and not with the people's tax dollars. A quick review of history will show this type of capricious government over reach by the British, inspired the American Revolution.
It's hard to imagine a “conservative” as naive or ignorant as this. There's the Lincoln Project I suppose. You're probably a plant. If you are genuine, wake up and smell the roses. The idea that present day Humanities are anything to do with neutral truth seeking, are anything but Marxist indoctrination centres is so far beyond a joke. And Rufo explicitly endorsed your point about not replacing one orthodoxy with another, repeatedly.
The bottom line is the college is struggling financially. I think the discourse is focused on the wrong topic---it shouldn't be about decreasing "wokeness" (whatever that is), but about the root cause---what are the other colleges that can serve as benchmarks for the New College, and how are they doing financially. What are the ones who are financially strong doing differently than New College? Is it student enrollment, tuition, faculty/staff salaries, overhead costs? DeSantis is showing exactly how NOT to run a business, at least to the point of breaking even, which should be the goal of academics. One could argue that leading institutions of higher ed have "woke" problems, but Harvard, Stanford, Purdue, UMich are on solid financial footing. Their very existence shows that woke and non-woke can thrive together in the same institution. Unfortunately, I think both sides of the political spectrum feel that somehow supressing free speech is the only way to expand it. But the root cause is much more objective and concrete.
Its not even just about the business sides of the college, its about the overreach of the Governor on the institution to overwrite its existing supposed "ideology" whatever that means, its self defeating and obviously alienate most people who just want to study, which causes down in enrollment and so on and so on
In the 50s and 60s people were upset that their kids listened to Rock n Roll. In the 70s they were upset over Civil Rights, the war and hippies and free love. The 80s we were all going to hell because of punk rock and Madonna. I find that the most intolerable people to the way our kids want to live are the people who lived thru all of those decades. Hypocrisy in America never ceases to amuse! Those generations were the precursor to this one.
Maybe if we had backed up earlier, instead of just complaining, we wouldn't be here.
