  • Less than a year after Ron DeSantis appointed a new board of trustees to remake New College of Florida in the image of DeSantis' 'war on woke' political stunt, nearly 40 faculty members have left the small school, along with many students, who the board is trying to replace with lower standards and athletic scholarships.

So instead of biologists, sociologists, educators, engineers, etc. New College will now be turning out a bunch of sports management majors. Because that's what really drives a school's academic rigor and reputation.

College students are adults, not children. There's no "think of the children" argument to be had here. They're old enough to vote, they're old enough to drive, and many of them are of drinking age. Some of them are over 30 years old. Some are over 50. They're making choices about their future career paths. The government does not have the right to dictate to them what careers they are allowed to have and what they are allowed to learn.

A Dutchie here. I sure hope that if Trump is not a candidate anymore, deSantis will not be the alternative. I expect him to be a greater disaster for the USA than Trump. The Trump era has already weakened the systems to an extent that will takd a long time to repair. DeSantis knows the system. He can read and is not as lazy as Trump. And he is interested in far more area's than Trump. I am afraid he will do irreversible damage to the USA and the rest of the world. He is not a mini-Trump but Trump 5.0.
Do the republicans not have a candidate who is not aiming for fascism, will do disastrous things internationally and is qualified like in having worked in public office before. I hate to say it but it seems to me that only Chris Christie and maybe Nick Haley come to mind.
The only republican that I know who would fit, is Liz Cheney. I know I would probably not like her policies but she is at least sane and no fascist.

A well-rounded, expansive view of the world (citizenship included) is the job of a liberal arts education. I'm saying that it's nonsensical not to use location, location, location in course offering. People who study and teach about the ocean tend to like living by the ocean. Ditto for all kinds of things. Forms an academic community, a place to chat up ideas, research, teaching issues. When people are taught to form their own opinions and do their own research, we call this becoming educated. Educated people overwhelmingly vote Democrat. Not all of them, but a great majority. Most republicans are blue collar, average "Joes" who are so used to being told what to do, what to think, and how to vote, that they never consider there might be an alternative.
Republicans value power, authority, and control while masking it behind other facades. If colleges teach students to become educated, the GOP loses a large portion of its base and will likely never win an election again. This is why they want cookie cutter schools, colleges, and universities to create good "workers" who do as they are told and don't bother applying critical thinking skills, instead of good leaders who will challenge the status quo.
Again, not every Republican feels this way, this is a broad generalization that has been exacerbated by Trump and the MAGA Crowd.

I hope they sue when the school offers students a place to take their studies and they choose to interrupt that in the middle of the course of study, they don’t have their teachers anymore because they chose to shift to other priorities, and I think that that cannot go unpunished the university made a commitment to the students.

Sooooo many ignorant right wing religious voters in Fl put the beast in charge of Fl
They asked for him, the rest of us have to suffer the consequences ! Dems aren’t perfect! Republicans are tyrannical hypocrites hiding behind their religion, and cherry picking their religious books AND the constitution to justify their hypocritical , corporatist, greedy, and bigoted behavior
Us Floridians who refused to drink the Trump/ DeSantis / “christian” republican koolaid are paying a very high price for the idiocy of others!
I want my quirky and purple Florida back!
It will take years to get her back!

@@jeremymead8546 you'd be surprised about how many top liberal arts colleges teach biology - in the Florida context with lots of coasts and mangrove areas, not offering marine biology courses appears to be a missed opportunity to stand out nationally.

None of our students can get in touch with their advisors, if they even have one. It’s gotten to a point that student-tutors are the ones helping their classmates fill out FAFSA, forms, recommend classes and register for them. It’s ridiculous. Our tutoring lab has 2 tutors-that’s it.
