    **Please REMOVE your props on your quad copter during setup. Note, Pete had already done the initial setup on his controller and ESCs when we shot this video and so knew that they wouldn't spin up. This is bad practice and we are sorry this is slightly confusing.**
    The Pixhawk 4 Mini is an advanced (and as the name implies), miniaturized development kit for the PX4 autopilot. The flight controller has been designed and developed in collaboration with Holybro and Auterion, optimized to run PX4. It comes preinstalled with the latest PX4 firmware and features advanced processor technology from STMicroelectronics, sensor technology from Bosch, InvenSense, and a NuttX real-time operating system, delivering incredible performance, flexibility, and reliability for controlling any autonomous vehicle.

    Yes! Amazing,y awesome. I just built my drone with an APM 2.8 and am happy with it.

      Hey Fluffy Crystal, Thanks for sharing!
      I'd be curious to know the performance difference between the APM 2.8 and my setup. This was my first experience autonomous flight controller, and so I don't have anything to compare it too. It seems like the APM 2.8 is a pretty good deal for 8 channels IN/OUT, but I suppose once you add in a power board and GPS, the new pixhawk 4 mini bundle isn't too bad.
      Ya know, many years ago, we used to make the original ardupilot and ADM at SparkFun. I remember designing a production test fixture for those. It was a beast :)

      What power board and GPS are you using?

      @@PeteLewis my understanding, it's really just the update frequency and additional IO on the > APM 2.8. I have the APM 2.8 and the PixHawk PX4. PX4 is on a 680mm drone ATM, and is just awesome. I have yet to use the APM, because I realized after I purchased it was outdated, so I just bought the PX4 for the build. Planning on building a sub 250g with the APM soon, to at least put it to use.

(in the field)

    Great, what is the difference between the mini and the full version?

    • @PeteLewis
      @PeteLewis 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The biggest difference is the physical size of each unit and the number of PWM output channels. The mini is much smaller (suitable for 250 sized quads) and only has 8 output channels, where as the full version has 16. The full version also has quite a few more connectors on the face - allowing for easy plug in play connections to multiple telem/sensors/boards. And the redundant power source plug.
      Check out the full version here (the features tab is a good highlight of what it's got):

    Does it support collective pitch helicopter ( flybarless ). ?

    • @PeteLewis
      @PeteLewis 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Bilal,
      I have not tried this out yet, but it looks like the Blade 130X is an option in the airframe setup window of QGroundControl. And this is a CP flybarless heli (from what I can tell online).
      www.horizonhobby.com/blade-130-x-bnf-with-as3x%C2%AE-technology-blh3780
      I also found a blog with an example setup using the pixRacer on the Blade 130X. It might be a little out-dated (from 2016), but it could be worth reaching out to the author, Bart Slinger.

    Why are your props on while doing this video...Did I miss a disclaimer that you said you were doing this with the props on and others should not do? Is there a motor directional and esc test for each motor like on beta flight, or ET Vector fcs.

    • @PeteLewis
      @PeteLewis 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey tobydogs,
      Sorry I wasn't more clear about the prop removal thing. Yes, it is a very good idea to remove your props during initial setup. I should have done this for my video.
      After the initial setup (which I had already done), it is safe to plug in USB with props attached (and NO LIPO plugged in).
      It is definitely bad practice to show props attached in a video focusing on initial setup. I wish I had thought to do this during shooting, and I hope my comment about not plugging in your lipo battery will avoid any mishaps. (th-cam.com/video/3TC7wE5RL_Q/w-d-xo.html) I will also add in a large note to the description above, so hopefully people will see that.
      In terms of motor direction, I can't seem to find anything in the QGroundcontrol software showing correct motor direction, but here is a pretty good guide here:
      docs.px4.io/en/frames_multicopter/lumenier_qav250_pixhawk_mini.html
      And the specific image from that guide showing prop direction is here:
      docs.px4.io/images/qav250_add_motors.jpg
      Hope this helps!

    You can use OBS to record your screen in not 3 fps.
    Cool product and good, informative video. 👍

    • @PeteLewis
      @PeteLewis 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the feedback, feedback jack! Glad you enjoyed the video. I was worried it was gonna end up too long, but I think it's okay as is. I spent the good part of two days soldering, testing, and setting up the flight controller. I hoped to cover all the stuff I learned and make other newbies experience that much easier. Plus, I am super grateful to our videographer , who did an amazing job of splicing all the footage together.
      PS about the screen capture fps... we tried out flashback express for this ( www.flashbackrecorder.com/ ) , and we had a heck of time getting it from my windows 10 laptop to our videographers mac. We had to play with the export settings a ton to get it to finally work, and the lower fps setting (with an AVI export) was the only way. Thanks for the tip about the OBS ( obsproject.com/ ), and we'll give that a try next time. I love that it has Windows, mac and linux versions. This will be handy for sharing files. Plus, if possible, we always prefer to use opensource software around here. Thanks!!

      Hey onjoFilms, anythings possible, right?
      Are you planning on sitting on it? I'd be a little scared to trust my life with this pixhawk 4 mini (at the moment), but maybe after I use it at least a few more times :)
      So as I was typing this, I had to google "flying chairs" and found this guy:
      th-cam.com/video/RYLGhVPp8lw/w-d-xo.html
      Holy cow that is cool! Looks like he is using the KK2.1.5 flight controller ($19). Wow, I'd be even more scared to put so much trust in a FC under 20 bucks.

    if only you could make the drone do a cartwheel.. :-)

    • @PeteLewis
      @PeteLewis 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well... if it was on purpose, that would be even better :) I'm so glad it didn't damage my quad too badly. It's amazing how resilient these things are. I have a new frame on order, and it was on sale for 21 bucks.. score! Now I'll have 3 spare arms, but I hope I don't have to use them any time soon :)
      PS last summer we went to watch a FPV racing event in Erie, CO. Pretty much every pilot had two or three quads at the ready, because there was plenty of crashes and accidental cartwheels. It's a pretty good time, I recommend checking one out if you have the chance. And bring a set of goggles if you have em, cuz it's fun to tune into each pilots feed and see the action FPV!
