Gordon's Cup | How to Drink

  • On this episode of How to Drink, I’m going to be showing you how to make the best brunch cocktail on earth, the Gordon’s Breakfast. This is a Gin and Cucumber drink courtesy of Milk+Honey, and it is one of my absolute favorites! Now, the Gordon’s Breakfast is a variation of the Gordon’s Cup, so I will be making this drink both ways but either way both are sublime brunch drinks. Hope you enjoy, cheers!
    This drink was originally invented and served at the world famous Milk + Honey in the Lower East Side of NYC. That bar that really kicked off the modern speakeasy scene with it's complete lack of a sign, no reservations, no menu, and clever list of rules for patrons to abide by. It's also the place that set me on the path that lead to How to Drink, so it's near and dear to my heart. Sadly it's gone (though the bartenders who worked they opened a new bar in the same place called Attaboy: tremendously fantastic) but the recipes and concoctions that made it famous are available in the book: Regarding Cocktails by Sasha Petraske. Tragically Sasha passed much before his time, far too young, and left a very long shadow over the world of mixology, he is deeply missed.
    Gordon's Cup Ingredients:
    - 8 Lime Wedges
    - 4 Cucumber Wheels
    - .75 oz or 21 ml of Simple Syrup
    - 2 oz or 60 ml London Dry Gin
    - Garnish with Cucumbers & Limes
    - Add Pinch of Salt & Pepper
    Gordon's Breakfast Ingredients:
    - 6 Lime Wedges
    - 3 Cucumber Wheels
    - .75 oz or 21 ml of Simple Syrup
    - 2 oz or 60 ml of London Dry Gin
    - 2 Barspoons of Cholula Hot Sauce
    - 1 Barspoon of Worcestershire Sauce
    - Garnish with Cucumber & Limes
    - Add a Pinch of Salt & Pepper

    After making both of these (...a handful of times) I was unhappy with the cucumber seeds left floating in my glass after shaking. So, I did a cucumber infused simple and replaced the .75oz Simple with the infused syrup. Also, I cut the cucumber garnish into spears instead of wheels, and it made the glass a little less crowded.
    This is the drink you bust out when someone says "I've never really liked gin"

    I never knew this had an official name! This is absolutely my favorite drink. I've also had it with a little elderflower in place of simple and it's soooooo good. The cucumber and elderflower combined with the gin botanicals just feels so springy and bright.

      How To Drink yeah! Invented in Calgary Alberta, every bar has their own spin on it. Bacon, maple, salmon, pickled, Montreal smoke spice. I just made the Gordon's Breakfast and I cant tell if I like it or not. It's so weird.

    I think some crushed mint leaves would also be a fantastic addition.

    • @howtodrink
      @howtodrink  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It might be, but there's also already so much going on in here, it might just add noise. I'll have to try it.

    • @MihaiViteazul100
      @MihaiViteazul100 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe as as a simple addition to the Cup, not so much the Breakfast. I can definitely see it conflicting with the hot sauce in that one.

    Awesome video as always. I was very surprised that the limes didn't get squeezed or muddled at all and you're able to get what you need from just shaking them. Looking forward to giving them a try and always love hearing suggestions on places to check out next time I make it to the east coast. Cheers!

    For never being a bartender, you actually don't have many cringy moments. EXCEPT every time you cut a lime, I want to punch a baby koala in the neck.

      Cut off the butt of the lime where it hangs from the tree and slice it the opposite way you did. It’s more for esthetics

    I'll be in NYC soon, is Milk+Honey accessible? I mean can I just walk on in and have some tasty cocktails or do I need a reservation or need to know someone?

    • @howtodrink
      @howtodrink  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Milk and Honey is sadly quite gone. But Attaboy carries it's torch, same location, same fantastic staff. They don't take reservations but if you show up early enough you'll be golden. (open at 6pm). If they're full, they'll take your cell phone number and call you when they have an opening.

    Greg, Two things. First, wearable items like a tee-shirt or sweatshirt would be something I would purchase in support of your work. Second, a sign off may be, "Here's to drinking with you, on How to Drink". Plain and simple.

      I appreciate it! Every few comments suggests these are longer for monetary reasons, they’re not. They’re as long as I feel like I’m being entertaining/informative for. Over the years here I’ve just been tracking what people respond to in comments. Early on people asked for tasting notes, so now that’s a staple. Then I noticed folks responding to anecdotes and stories and such, so that’s in there.
