Bees control their own hive find me a video where the bees died from moisture. You will find the bees starved or had disease than moisture built up. They need air why he has a upper entrance because it get iced over period. Bees survive -40 but they need the food to stay warm below 15f they start eating like it is 60 degrees outside like your mason jar full of sugar gone in 3 days.
@Michael, you said you needed 70-80lbs of honey for the bees going into the winter. Why do your hives have different combinations of boxes? Some look like 3 deeps, 2 deeps and a medium, I think one was 4 deeps. Also, do you achieve 70-80lbs with your double nuc hives? Thanks for all of the info, very helpful.

Just a touch of professionalism is wanted here. Why would it be so difficult to fix your technical issues with audio? An otherwise useful presentation was ruined somewhat for lack of quality. Some of what the gentleman shared seemed to be useful.
Its not about the R rating. R ratings are for insulation, which stops the movement of heat. The tar paper is just used as a black layer that absorbs the heat of the sun well. So rather then prevent heat movement it is catching the sun's rays and projecting that into the hive.
@Daniel I’m not sure if you have heard of NOD winter Bee wrap cozies, they have an R rating of R8 and are very effective, but they are thick and take up a lot of storage space, not sure whether to switch to tar paper.

You don't use queen excludes? So you have brood everywhere?

@@HoneyCombCottageBeeOfficial i guess that depends on your preferences and storage needs. Tar paper sounds cheaper though.
its just a windbreak tar paper isnt used by many keepers anymore old school practice and it stinks like well tar
