What I’ve Learned From 2 Weeks In Qatar 🇶🇦

  • Day 290. 88km (69354kms)
What a delightful end to my Christmas break! On top of last night’s lovely Boxing Day turkey leftovers and wine stay with Julie and family, I now picked up armfuls of reduced price Christmas cakes in an M&S on my way out of Doha. The remainder of my Qatari Rial taken care of, it was simply a matter of riding as far as I could for the rest of the afternoon. Having (happily!) lost a day to bad weather yesterday I now had 400kms, and two border crossings to cover in 4 days to reach Bahrain on schedule for my new year’s eve plans.
Familiar with the Salwa road from the ride in, I was happy to see the football flags still lined the otherwise dull highway. I was also relieved to find it less busy than I had left it 12 days ago. Stopping at a servo to eat a sandwich smuggled out of the hotel breakfast, I observed a car with four or five children clambering about in the back all in traditional attire, in front a man and woman in white and black respectively, and between them, on the central armrest stood a falcon. While I took in this incredible scene they in turn gawped back at the lycra-d hobo happily munching a sandwich in the sun 😆
By 4pm I had crossed the country from east to west, but elected not to cross the border now as it would mean arriving in Saudi after dark. I would come to regret this decision. For now though I made my way to the open stretch of sand between Salwa beach resort and some semi-permanent campsites.
Here, I found a place away from the many tyre tracks and began pitching my tent. A south Asian man came to watch which I find uncomfortable but is not unusual south Asian man behaviour so I must learn to live with it. But when he reappeared after dark I found this very annoying and intrusive. I’m particularly incensed when a man is creepy and follows it up with a ‘mafi mushkilar’ = ‘no problems” as if such an assurance can somehow erase the sense of unease their unwelcome advances have created. I’m quite certain an Arab man wouldn’t approach a solo woman camping, but regrettably other men in this region do. Just to be sure I peed directly outside my tent in the superstitious hope of keeping all dangerous animals at bay.. (spoiler; it doesn’t work…)

I have a lot of catching up to do on your channel as I've been super busy with life's other inputs. I've learned a ton from your channel through your experiences, both good and bad. When I consider the breadth of your journey, I am still amazed at your fortitude, your courage, your fitness ( both mental and physical ), and your sense of adventure. And on top of that, you seem so at peace with it all! I struggle to find time to walk 10K steps every day in the calm familiarity surrounding my home in the U.S. Pacific Northwest, where I face none of the dangers and challenges you face, and you probably expend 5x that energy amount of before breakfast! Granted, I lack the rewards of discovery of accomplishment that you are experiencing, but I so appreciate that you share what you can here. Continued safe travels, and I look forward to catching up with what I have missed and moving forward!

Hi Greg! 👋🏼 thank you so much for this very kind message. For me it has become a normal existence after so many years, but I still struggle to explain the ‘hows’ and ‘whys’ to folk when they ask. Around here I compare myself to the Bedouin in an attempt to illustrate that some of us are just meant live life on the move. It’s not always easy - no-one’s life is - but I love it, I’m I’m very fortunate I get to do exactly as I choose with my time.. long may that continue! Happy new year, and many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment 😊 much appreciated!

Yeah. I guess.. Ive heard that’s what should be done in this region. But in Europe nothing would be done in this situation, so I must remember this option for next time, thank you 👍🏼
