Doha is where Past and Future meet. Innovative, modern, traditional, all in one. I just came back from a 1 week stay there and cannot put down in words how fantastic it was. If you are reading this comment and have interest in visiting Qatar, just go there, it is REALLY worthy a visit, you will be amazed!

I have been to Doha a few times for 2/3 days stopovers to get to South East Asia, Maldives, Mauritius, Seychelles and other Arab speaking countries. I actually love this city - it is really good and clean. Done all the main sites there - Katara Cultural Village, Aspire Tower and Park, Doha skyline, National Museum, Museum of the Islamic Arts, The Pearl, Muhammed Ibn Abdul Wahab Mosque, a day trip to the sea line desert, Katara Tower, Villagio Mall, Education City Mosque, Souq Waqif, Qanat Quartier etc.
I actually prefer staying in Doha rather than Dubai although Abu Dhabi is wonderful

Discreet and un advertised places in Qatar:
1-Al Saad aka Syria/Lebanon of Qatar. Great Levant restaurants and Hookah cafes.
2-Najma’s flee market and chapatis aka little India/Bangladesh of Qatar.
3-Shahania farm lands and camping resorts like Heenat Salma and Samarya.

Friday mornings before Friday prayer are the most quiet in Doha, even cafes and supermarkets close between 11am and 1pm. Then the Family day starts, when Corniche is full with people if it is cooler outside or everyone dashes to Malls in the summer heat. Quanat Quartier was built long before World Cup, people live there, cafes and shops are there. Yes, that's true that during World Cup there were water parades going on, there were parades on Lusail Boulevard also, and Al Bida Park on Corniche had match screening and disco parties going on, and Souq Waqif was were all fans from different countries met before or after the games, Corniche was closed for traffic, only pedestrians allowed, Metro was free for everyone.
Did you know that schools in Doha had extended winter holidays for the time of World Cup to reduce traffic on the roads and also so that children could attend the games!

As a male who visited visited Doha a few times, I can say that I did feel quasi-uncomfortable wearing shorts in the mall. Just because I was the only one in them and it's a culturally conservative country and not much skin is seen as opposed to the US.
I loved the Souq Waqif but refused to go to the animal section since I am an animal lover. If you go to the Souq in the morning, you can get a cheaper price on things but not as many shops are open since the real time everyone shops is in the evening due to the heat.
