    She's right about the difference in treatment between fan girls and fan boys. Fan girls are often disparaged as being crazy, insane and hysterical. ARMY is often called toxic.
    Why is it accepted in society for men to devote every Sundays for their favorite sports, splurge on season tickets and team merch, but we're the ones crazy for traveling 8 hrs to catch them in concert and spend as much in merch? Men go on a rampage in the streets when their favorite team loses but we're deranged for waiting in line 5 hours for a concert or pitching a tent overnight to ensure front row seats.
    And men are just as verbally violent. Football (soccer) fans hurl racist slurs against football players of color, even chanting them during a game, but we're the ones scarily organized for chanting their names to cheer them on during a performance.
    Tell me you have never had any prejudiced thoughts about Justin Bieber fans, One Direction fans, or any boy band fans for that matter. Hell, Beatles fans who were initially mainly composed of women were called hysterical and all sorts of names, until men saw the light and realized they made good music so it became cool to like the Beatles.
    Ask any female sports or video games fan and they'll tell you the sexism they've faced in those male-dominated hobbies.
    Even Suga and BTS for that matter know this stereotype and the discrimination many ARMYs face. www.soompi.com/article/1249293wpp/bts-suga-talks-misguided-prejudice-idol-fans

      Amen!
      I came to this realization when I was in Chicago for the BTS concert at Soldier Field, there was a Cubs game the same weekend. The Cubs fans were drunk on the train before we even arrived in Chicago (they were funny drunks not mean just a little loud lol) and I saw many many Cubs fans decked out in their merchandise. I didn’t think it was strange at all but if I were to wear a BTS concert t shirt at home I become a weirdo fanatic fan. (And that would be coming from my husband who installed a giant antenna tower so he could watch the Lions loose on tv every season. When our antenna would not turn he climbed the antenna tower during a rain storm to turn it manually! Who is the fanatic?)

I became an Army instantly. I went to their LA/NY KCON and all their concerts near Northeast areas. My son has accompany me to several concerts. My son and I became very close due to BTS music. It’s definitely a double standard between men and women when it comes to being a “stan” or a fan. (There’s double standards between men and women within everything) the point she was trying to make was “why is it looked down upon when women are enthusiastic about music and bands.. but it’s liberating and okay when men are enthusiastic about the sports they like”

  • @Elle-yf7fq
    @Elle-yf7fq 3 ปีที่แล้ว +158

    but her point was its okay in the society for a male dominated like sport fans to be enthusiastic and be passionate on the other hand women dominated area like boyband fans get belittled for something that they show the same enthusiasm and being passionate about and then get belittled by the society and labeled as 'screaming rabid teenage girls'. Sucks to be women in the society while male gets labeled 'passionate' when they be screaming their lungs and show love for something that they enjoy. Its socially acceptable for men, while for women its not.

      @nmlott 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @Your Welcome I think when you hear or read about fans of “boy bands”they are stereotypical categorized as females and are usually considered groupies or gold diggers. Males are not label in that perspective when it comes to sports. The problem is the standards that gender has when it comes to supporting something you love. It is either negative or positive for certain people. I know that both genders have an interest in sports and music, but people should not judge others for liking something and wanting to be a part of it.

    • @Veronika-vy5ou
      @Veronika-vy5ou 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @Your Welcome people call us screaming, crazy, teenage fans about something they are passionate about. Yes, she did want to point out the male vs female aspect to their interests since society has decided what is "acceptable" passions is gender-based. Maybe someday it won't be, but it is now. As a passionate female sports fan, I could go into great detail about what it's like to be belittled when talking about football strategy, etc. because of my gender.
    Actually, I could talk about this for weeks since I have accumulated so many examples in my many decades of being female. 😁

      ???
      Male ARMYs have my respect, the amount of cr*p they usually have to deal with (especially on social media) is incredible.
      And my heart goes out to the older ARMYs, I've seen too many people belittle them because of their age and what they like. As if there was a time limit for what you can enjoy! Honestly...

    • @stephenalterman8551
      @stephenalterman8551 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@AnnOsman With all due respect I have to disagree on that. I myself am a straight male ARMY in my 30s, and I've experienced both sides. Yes, for the most part I've been treated well by female ARMYs, but I've also been a victim to sexism as well. In my individual case, I know very well first hand, what it's like to be a victim to gender discrimination - both as a male and as a female. In real life, I also work with these types of issues as well. I only have experience of what it's like being a male ARMY though. Despite having been treated well by most, I've also had my loyalty towards BTS and ARMY be questioned because, and I quote: "Only female ARMYs are real ARMYs". Now, anyone with brain cells knows that isn't true - you are an ARMY if you support and protect BTS and fellow ARMYs, and also live by what BTS preach - which is to stand up against social injustice, spread the message of love, peace and unity across the world, and also showing respect towards other people. It has nothing to do with gender, age, race, sexual orientation, etc. Yet, I've had instances where I've been excluded in conversations about our boys because of my gender. I would however like to add that I at no point consider these sort of people that say such things as ARMYs. Our community is far more than a regular fandom, we are all a family and whatever negative thing that is being said about either female, male and both/neither fellow ARMYs - affect all of us.

    The media especially American media has been very harsh towards AMRY even going as far as to say to BTS that we are insane...BTS, of course, just blanked the interviewer(s) and Jungkook went on to say that everything they do is for ARMY (I mean come on he has ARMY tattooed on his hand, why do the media make these statements??) More recently, Fallon, Cordon and others have gotten on board and feel ARMYs love and it has proved advantageous. The point made in the video was not about sports fans ,but more about male/female perspective. In every field whether its sports, gaming, music - men are allowed more and are encouraged to express themselves without the fear of being ridiculed. Every nerdy girl can recall at least one instance of mocking, mansplaining or even bullying. The sports and boybands are just two most evident examples, that's it.

    Hi, everyone! We thought it went without saying that we live in a world full of stereotypes and of course, we understand what xCeleste said in the video--it's very straightforward. It is worth noting that many of these stereotypes also arise from others' experiences that are different from our worldviews. In this case, it's men vs women and men's condescending viewpoint of women and the fandoms within music while also holding their perspectives about sports above that, even when they act or respond to sports the same way (or worse). Personally, I think these stereotypes arise outside of anything we do not appreciate ourselves. We can go to museums, art galleries, ballets, concerts, sporting events, car races, and never appreciate those things, nor would we understand the fandoms (or the hype) that come along with them if we do not appreciate it. The issues arise when these [un]appreciations turn into condescending viewpoints where others are written off as immature, stupid, or we begin classifying them by genre or even age. Generations already do that to each other with technology, video games, etc. It becomes even worse when the media begin running with these headlines that are demeaning, as well.

    • @kitmang220
      @kitmang220 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Unfortunately, many people won't even try to experience these new things because of the stereotypes. You can go to the ballet and hate it. But at least you went. With groups like BTS, all sorts of people (men, women, other cultures) won't even walk through the door. It's why good reactors get so much support from ARMY. Thoughtful videos like yours, by two guys that are not typical boy band followers, show everyone that it's ok to like the same things as "fangirls" do. Sorry for all the pressure you're getting in the comments. Do know that sometimes, just saying "I hear you; I understand where you're coming from" is enough of a response.

And I was told that BTS would not be happy to hear me say that I couldn’t be ARMY because of my age. Those words have not left my lips since. YES, I AM ARMY AND I AM OLD !!💜💜💜💜💜💜 and, when they drop a new song, I will stay online streaming the first 24 hrs, with my 3 IPads and laptop ! I can sleep whenever, but I need to do this for BTS !

    8:30 Well, just gonna say that I sure do see a lot of sport-related rioting causing a lot of damage, more so than "boy band" related ones hahahah. And the whole passing out thing? I've seen more people pass out at church more so than at concerts lol. I think the venues have a huge factor in that. Huge crowds pushed together in an area without enough airflow will definitely cause a lot of people to pass out lol. Also, I do think BTS has a pretty diverse demographic compared to "boy bands" of the past. Now, if people would get over their toxic masculinity or their ingrained stereotypes, there'd be even more diversity in ethnicities and ages at BTS concerts. Their music is so relatable. And their performances are so well-done, thought-out, and enjoyable. More people would enjoy them if they were more open-minded. Tbh, it took me about three tries before I started to become a fan. And I don't regret it lol.

    It baffles me that people still belittle the power of love. True ARMY love and appreciate these men beyond the superficial aspects. We appreciate them for how they are constantly encouraging us to be the best versions of ourselves. If we aren't the best versions, they help us understand that that's ok too. Some of us may need that extra boost of support. I don't know of any sports team pushing that message, but sports fans lose the freaking minds if you disparage their favorite team. The double standards are always going to be poorly balanced, in favor of men. And, that's the point, I feel, that xCeleste is trying to bring attention to. The commonalities between women and men are much larger than the differences. The only difference being the prevalence of violence from men during sports' events versus females going to see their band play. Also, I think everyone missed that she said that the chart came from "Research BTS", not herself.

    I believe the gender comparison between how we perceive women vs men who engage in and are passionate about a phenomena was highly accurate and also necessary. The belittling of, what is perceived as, female-dominated areas of interest is an ongoing societal problem. Leading to “what-is-viewed-as-male”-dominated areas of interest being higher valued, more respected and being more invested in. I am so tired of the “gender comparison is unnecessary” -comment as soon as someone tries to make a valid point. This is not critic towards this channel alone. I see this everywhere. Just as when BTS was accused of being misogynistic in lyrics. Instead of focusing on what BTS did about this , which was absolutely first class (i.e. go back to the study on social structures, make sure they are well informed, take in expert advice when unsure and try there darn best to not repeat) people always focus on how ridiculous the claim of misogyny was. Sure, by the standard of pop culture in the western world their lyrics can hardly be described as anti-female, BUT considering the influential power and foremost the ambitions of this amazing group, it is not unnecessary to give and receive critic as an ongoing process. The greater problem with this specific case was rather that the claim came from antis, to do harm. We, ARMY, should be the ones to ask these questions, in the loving atmosphere that the culture and relationship between ARMY and BTS have created. The safe place. But we should not belittle misogyny in pop culture per se. It is very real and very problematic.

The fact that BTS is tapped to endorse products like Samsung and Hyundai means their fan demographics is older with disposable income, contrary to common belief. Also to your other point about your channel viewership is mainly women in the younger demographic, it’s skewed data since you are sampling people who grew up with youtube. I’d say concert attendance data is a much more accurate representation of ARMY demographic.

    As far as I'm aware, spins are the total amount of times a song is played (in this case on the day of its release) regardless of the number of stations that played it and the size of their audience.
    Impressions (or airplay points), on the other hand, try to measure how many people hear the song on the radio, so it takes into consideration the projected audience of each station that spins a song.
    (I think I went on a mini-rant about Life Goes On vs. Airplay on the discord server a couple of weeks after its release) [ www.theatlantic.com/culture/archive/2020/11/bts-life-goes-on-be-album/617244/ ]

      Do you think it is only men who do this? Or do you think because it is a male dominated society, and those thoughts and values of men are placed as right or accepted, that it is the totality of all of that that creates such a condescending environment for women to have experiences that are outside the realm of men in a positive way?

    • @riajhart

      @@BrothersFromAnotherColor oh, I didn't say YOU did, sorry if it felt like that. I was talking about your comment of why it was comparing women against men, it was like that because we live through the hypocrisy of social media portraying women like that for screaming while screaming fanboys of sports get a pass and even a comment of how passionate they are in a good light.
      And the passing out comment was in spite of gender, I was saying that be it women or men, if you pass out in a concert, it doesn't really mean you are a fan, it has nothing to do with being a fan. Just like you don't have to be a fan, to attend a concert, maybe you're a casual listener.
      As I said, I like going to concerts with my friends, I went to a lot of concerts I kind of liked the artists lol and I still had to step away before passing out cuz it was a lot of people, so it isn't an indicator of being a fan or not

    you guys didn't get her point and i understand because for you it's hard to understand women struggles, since you're not women, but that's exactly why i think you should think and listen instead of trying to critique when a woman is talking about her issues with the society that are a product of misogyny and patriarchy. if you don't act like that, good for you, but you're not the whoe society. also those stereotypes that were laid on bts of which core lies in social issues of women always being ridiculed despite even the fandom not being female dominated is affecting BTS' image which is worsened by xenophobia and racism that bring even more stereotypes onto the group and their fanbase. it wouldn't be too big of an issue if it didn't affect the treatment both armys and bts get from both the industry and the "locals" and also if it wasn't the reason why BTS are always ridiculed and looked down upon by people outside the fandom.
    another big point that you missed out on is the fact that male fans aren't usually as open to show their passion as female armys do. so talking about armys demographic based on statistics from online platforms like youtube or social media is unreliable. that's why she brought out the demographic of ticket sales, and then she connected to it the fact that the ones of age above 20 are the ones who can afford tickets, merch, cars, and so on. another reliable source of demographic is their actual listeners on music platorms and those always show close to 50/50 or about 60/40 statistics.

  • @tellmebangtan1140

    LEAVE IT TO MEN TO MISS THE POINT! Guys the point of the Venn diagram graphic is to show that sports fans and boyband fans are both just passionate fans; however, boyband fans face derision for their passion simply because they are women and therefore their opinions are not valued the same. They face numerous micro-(and macro)-aggressions like being called "hysterical" or "rabid", yet sports fans (who do actually riot or fight on occassion) are rarely labeled negatively (even in the news reports specifically about the rioting). The graphic is not meant to be an exhaustive comparison and its frankly ridiculous that you chose to belittle it simply because its didn't paint what you consider a fair picture...I'm sorry, but as men stepping into a largely female-dominated space, please try to listen a little more... there are lots more things we can say about both groups (obviously), but thats not the point...Y'all praising yourselves for offering what you think is constructive criticism on a graphic you didn't actually understand is not the flex you think it is... I stopped watching after this part so if these guys corrected themselves later, let me know.

      Well, your first sentence was as sexist as they come and I somehow wish you'd watch our other videos to get a better sense of who we are and what we have to offer to this community. The point wasn't missed by us, probably missed in acknowledging it I suppose. Trale and I are trained in bias and stereotypes and we know that virtually anything outside of your own worldview is subject to inappreciation unless you somehow have a ton of empathy. But, the real issue comes when it's a male-dominated society and the values of males are placed above females. Men, especially those 18-22 destroy their college towns after wins and losses and we know that men are characterized as passionate and so many other derogatory terms are used to describe women. The same happens in sports, white athletes are called smart and cerebral while black athletes are called fast and explosive. It's dangerous language. It's also language that many don't even realize they are using, or the meaning of it anyways. We are also aware that as males we provide a different perspective or even our own prejudices, just as you clearly have your own prejudices when telling us what we can or need to do as men in this setting. Either way, language matters, no matter the intent. I'm sure glad we deleted our parts that discussed all the other spelling errors, etc. throughout xCeleste's video--that would've probably been another example of men with negative viewpoints on editing or something?

      We’re certainly not praising ourselves at all. I don’t think we belittled it at all but if that’s what you want to call us giving our thoughts on the graphic be our guest. From your comment, I can tell you haven’t watched ANYTHING other than this video and if you have, shame on you for picking this out of all the things we’ve talked about (race, crime, pandemic) among other things) to he mad about. We’re far from sexist, we didn’t miss the point and if you didn’t like or disagree with what we said you could’ve came about it in a better manner and maybe there could’ve been a better understanding. We know all about the men and sports correlation. Please don’t expect nothing less than our thoughts when you’re on our page. We’re not always right but we’re always us.

      Hi, I personally love debating topics so if you don't wish to continue this discussion, feel free to simply not reply. Just wanted to say that because this is interesting for me, but you may not feel the same.
      My first sentence was intentionally inflammatory, I apologize. Ive seen a couple clips of male reactors reacting the same to that diagram but I HAVE watched other videos on your channel, which is why I was so disappointed to hear such things from yall...
      But in the end, it got your attention and I hope you can take the time to read up on why the generalization of men maybe shouldnt be called sexist. Here's one article my dad recommends as a starter: medium.com/mensplainr/of-generalizations-and-men-by-a-retired-general-of-the-not-all-men-army-b21d66b9613c
      I personally recommend you read about it from a woman's perspective, but you may relate more strongly to the writer above.
      Couple points I'd like to address:
      #1: Where did I tell you what you cannot or cannot do? I literally just wrote please try to listen more... word choice IS really important and I thought I was pretty clearly expressing my displeasure at something you said, not telling you what to say or how to run your channel. I might point out that regardless of the language used, you labeling my request as somehow demanding or censoring does seem to correlate to how men are praised for being the boss but women are criticized for being bossy in a similar situation...no?
      #2: I REQUESTED that you listen more because I feel that people tend to become a bit close minded when they feel threatened. It seemed like after you saw that diagram, you took it a little personally and focussed on defending sports fandoms (or at least making it clear the diagram wasnt perfect, therefore undermining its message, whether intentional or not) rather than trying to understand the other perspective. It even carried into the next talking point about disposable income, which was not related to sports fans in the video and was in fact a separate point.
      #3: I can only judge what is presented to me and I'm not sure why I should care about what you edited out? I do think that criticisms about someone's spelling, grammar, pronunciation, etc. are unnecessary as long as they successfully communicated the point... potentially classist, elitist and at times racist, but im not sure why you'd think I'd call it sexist... unless you view any criticism lodged at you by a woman as somehow calling you sexist?
      I would love to discuss more about this (politely, as I don't intend to hurt your feelings) I think you could greatly benefit from a wider perspective on sexism especially as you continue to operate within a largely female-dominated fandom.
      There's this really great term someone coined on twitter (I think) called mentrification and as content creators who care about social issues, I think you should be aware of it.

    Making it female against male...Because men can act the exact same about their team...And that's okay...But when women do it...We are seen as ridiculous. The comparison doesn't go beyond that point really

    Have you checked out the statistics around domestic violence after
    Sporting events? In the parking lots, the drunk driving. I don’t think any of that compares to passing out at a concert. I stand with her statement. I do love your reactions but be careful here. BTS represents safe spaces.

    The only thing I didn't like about this vid is the "western music industry are often rooted in racism and xenophobia" part. That is clearly not true. How many black rappers "make it" in the western media? Remember Psy? He was played on the radio all the time and he wasn't from the west. Also how many latino people have made it on the charts and are getting plays on the radio? A lot lol. The only reason K-Pop isn't big over here is because we have enough people trying to make it and who have made it. There are only a certain number of hours in a day and with so many "artists" in America they can only pick and choose from so many. So no it's not xenophobic or racist. They were just reaching with that racism and xenophobia bs lol.

      That quote is from a music industry journalist that writes for Forbes and Billboard and know a ton more happening behind the scenes in music that the average person (us).
      Yes black rappers get huge in western markets but getting acknowledged by award shows were a huge uphill battle and still is. Latino songs only blew up in the western market because of Ricky Martin and Enrique Englaseis (i have no idea how to spell that last name) only those that they sung in English got radio play and got acknowledged on award shows. And music industry ensured they would get a Grammy but it was a seperate Latin Grammy and doesn't have the same weight as they weren't competing in categories with western artists in pop, rap, and hip hop and nevermind for best artist or album. Despacito was a huge thing that it got so much radio play as it was in Spanish and it got number 1 and that was only a couple years ago. People still have a thought in western market that if its not in their language whats the point in listening to it, I just have to look at my own family to see this.
      So I respectfully disagree with your opinion

      Psy was a meme, a joke, a funny fad, by no means was it a meaningful entry into the American music industry!
