If you want to really hear a blues song, check them out doing “One Way Out” live at the Fillmore East. One of the best live performances ever.

Having seen them 4 times, 3 times before Duane died, I much preferred them doing "Don't Keep Me Wonderin' " live than "One Way Out". However, their live performances of "Whippin' Post" on any given night, kills both.

@@helgar791 I agree with you about “Whipping Post” but since they already reviewed it I thought that seeing Duane and Dickey trade riffs on “One Way Out” is something everyone should experience. “Don’t Keep Me Wondering” is also fantastic to see from the Fillmore East. Great harmonica playing.

@@helgar791 I don't know, obviously ALL the recordings from that weekend at the Filmore are spectacular BUT... The version of "You Don't Love Me" that made the album is (in my opinion) THEE single BEST live songs ever recorded! Also, Dickey Betts' solo in that song is probably the best guitar solo ever recorded! That says a lot too as Duane is definitely my favorite guitar player of all time!

The Brothers were born in Nashville and raised in Jacksonville, Florida. My favorite American Band for over 50 years. Duane was the master of the Slide Guitar and his younger brother, Gregg was the greatest White Blues Singer of all time. Shout out must go to their other guitarist, Dicky Betts, a legend in his own right! They virtually invented Southern Blues Rock. I have been fronting 8 Bands in the last 20 years and we always have done Statesboro Blues, One Way Out and Stormy Monday. Whipping Post is a must listen as well.

Only lets me hit the 'Like' button once.
In concerts, this was the opening song, Duane thought of it as a warm-up/ get it on tune.
They were both ( Duane and Gregg) born in Nashville, moved to the tidewater area of Virginia (Norfolk-Virginia Beach) then back to Nashville, then to Daytona Beach FL. Had a band called The Hourglass and went to Los Angeles in the attempt to make a go of it but the record company tried to control their music to make them more commercial. Bad move resulting in failure and band breakup. All but Gregg Allman went back east, with Duane stopping off in the Muscle Shoals area, working as a studio player at Fame Recording studio. He then went to Jacksonville FL, met up with others for a little jam session. The others (mostly) turned out to become the new band. Needing a singer, Duane called for his brother to come back. They were taken under contract by Atlantic Records then given to Capricorn, out of Macon GA, where they moved to so they'd be close to the studio. Southern? Yeah, I think so. Gregg Allman didn't like the title 'Southern rock'. To his mind, ALL rock music was Southern in origin. Southerners were all over rock music. Chuck Berry - St Louis, Elvis - Memphis, Little Richard - Macon. He said you might as well call it 'rock rock'. The so-called experts call the ABB the Kings of Southern Rock.
This song was recorded at the Fillmore East Theater in NYC, and recorded for the album 'Live at the Fillmore East' in 1971. 7 months later Duane would die tragically in a motorcycle accident. This album has been called the greatest live music recording of all time. I agree. Look at the song listing, and just play it out. It's amazing.

Thank you for mentioning Gregg's comments on the term 'southern rock'. And he's right; they were so much more; jazz, blues, rock, country all blended into what one might call the Allman Brothers Band sound. Someone in the dorm had their first album in 1969 or 70 and they've been my favorite since.

One of my favourite bands of all times. I was 13 when this live album came out. Had to save up to buy it because it was a double album. Never got to see the original lineup live but saw different versions over the years. The original one-two punch of Duane Allman and Dickey Betts on guitars with Berry Oakley on bass....man!! I saw their farewell tour at the Beacon in NY a few years ago. Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks provided that same punch as the original duo and Oteil Burbridge was right in there on bass. Gregg, Jamoe and Butcb were always there for us. RIP Duane, Berry, Gregg and Butch.

It's so great to see people still discovering great classic music from the past and keeping it alive for the next generations. So grateful for these recordings and the musicians themselves too.

Can't go wrong with ABB. A couple of their other jams you haven't checked out yet are *Melissa* (1972) and *No One To Run With* (1994). Agree with you both; ABB is sit back, toe-tappin', timeless music.

Yeah! Early Allman Brothers is awesome! Try Ain't My Cross to Bear, Dreams and when time permits, the epic, live from the Fillmore East, Whipping Post, those tunes are amongst the best you will ever here. Southern Rock's best. Enjoy! 🎵

I had the good fortune of seeing the original Allman Brothers twice (w/ Duane Allman on slide guitar). Side note: before this line-up, Greg & Duane had a band called The Allman Joys. Nice reaction, by the way.

The amazing thing about Duane Allman is all that he accomplished so young...he's still considered a slide guitar icon...he died when he was 24. He was probably 23 here.

Until Duane's death the Allman Brothers Band was primarily a blues band with a little Rock thrown in. After he died in 1971 the band's next album had a more even blend of rock and blues with a little country added in. It was in response to this time period in 1972 that a writer coined the term "Southern Rock" to describe one of their concerts.

The Great Late Duane Allman on that Slide guitar and Dicky Betts on that other Lead. Put Berry Oakley on Bass and Butch Trucks on Drums, and Finally Greg Allman on Keyboards and Vocals. This group was KICK ASS back in the early '70's

This song was originally recorded by Georgia blues singer/guitarist Blind Willie McTell w who was active from the 20’s - 50’s. Statesboro is a small town between Macon & Savannah, Ga known mainly as the home of Georgia Southern University. The Allman Brothers were based in Macon, Ga. & recorded for Capricorn records. They all lived together in an old mansion called “the big house”. That squealing guitar you hear is the late great Duane Allman on slide guitar. He also played on tracks by Aretha Franklin & Wilson Pickett when he worked with “The Swampers” in Muscle Shoals, Ala.

For more Allman Brothers blues you've gotta hear Stormy Monday from Live at the Fillmore East and Not My Cross to Bear from their self titled first album, The Allman Brothers Band. Greg's voice at its best and both Dicky and Duane masterful.

Statesboro blues was their opening number most sets. From the first note, ecstasy came out of their instruments. Often Dwayne had this enormous grin and was on his tippy toes.

Duane had his guitar with him, playing, practicing 12 hours a day. That and he was a ferocious reader. He loved reading books.

The live version of this song is completely amazing. Also consider the fact that the Allman Brothers Band had two drummers who played totally in sync with each other. There was not a single mistake by either drummer - Butch Trucks and Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson. I saw this band at a venue in St. Louis, MO back in 1973 on a Sunday night. The concert started at 8pm and was supposed to be over at 11pm when the venue was supposed to close up for the night. We were still there at midnight that night! Southern rock at it's best.

Their "Wasted Words" has one of the best lines of advice going:
"Well, ain't no saint,, sure as hell ain't no savior,
