I lived at 62nd and agnes where my mom grew up and graduated at SouthEast. I went to Pinkerton elementary school then we moved in "64" to Grandview. But after saying that, Fairyland was the greatest place to go. I loved that ole wooden roller coaster! You had to have a butt load of tickets to keep going but all the rides were great! They also had a humungus pool. But like it was stated the African americans were not allowed in at the time to the pool. There used to be all kinds of huge picnics going on in the great pavillion at the entrance of the park which usually meant free food. As a kid that was great! But that area back in the day was fantastic! When I wasn't at Fairyland, I was at Swope park flying kites in the field by the theater, going to zoo, watching the soap box derby runs by the entrance of Swope! Riding my new metal wheeled skate board in starlight theater parking lot! That was awesome! My best friend used to live in the house that was at the top of the hill at 63rd street s turn by the old Chiefs practice field on 63rd across from the DR Pepper plant! We used to camp in the woods in his back yard that ended at the street the goes into starlight theatre parking and zoo parking. But to get back to Fairyland park, it was sooooo sad to see it close. They did later take a bunch of the stuff from fairyland and installed them in a restaurant, "The Sweden House", which was a smorgasbord place that made great frog legs, It was located at Grandview shopping center many years ago.

I’m looking into the protests at Fairyland. Could I speak to somebody about the research in this video?

Hi Sara! I wasn't involved in this video but my family owned Fairyland. I have been researching the Park and I am always happy to share information with others. My email address is jhvalet@aol.com.

I used to go there as a VERY young child & would be interested in any information & pics of the park- reminder of location & the big roller coaster. When did FairyLand close & why ? My father & I have memories there.

It's good to know the not so fun history of the place (guaruntee I would've been banned on the basis of being queer, for one). As an amusement park nerd I intend to visit the site at some point to look for reminants (I see a literal X, as in "X marks the spot" in the trees that I imagine were part of the park, dividing paths or something) but I don't want to whitewash the ugly history of segregation.

On facebook, there is a group called Local Kansas City History Buffs that includes a lot of photos and info. I (the teacher who helped the students make this) have looked into Fairyland! I will write about it soon.

I grew up at 60th and Chestnut in the 60"s.- 70s and would swim at the pool when it was opened. and rode all the rides.
The old wooden roller coaster would pass by above the pool periodically. it was replaced with a modern steel coaster and was sold to an amusement park in Oklahoma.
In early 70s I went to Rock Concerts there called Carney Rock.
