    First thought is a corrupt bios. Not too uncommon in boards that will power on, but don't post. With luck that board has a bios flash option or a second bios you can switch to. Otherwise you may have to remove the Bios chip and flash it externally. There is also the possibility some errant surge made it through the PSU without killing it, only to kill the MOBO.

  • @MyersComputerServices

    Also don't forget when swapping a new motherboard into a case, it will do a boot cycle as you've just seen. I've seen this on multiple fixes and builds. Always had geeked me out initially but realized that's just what happens when it's completely wiped out of power. 👍

    MSI Z490 and Z590 had a huge problems with BIOS installation which could brick your motherboard if you installed the BIOS from the Dragon Center/MSI Center instead of from the BIOS through USB stick. The common symptom of this issue was PC hanging on the CPU LED and not posting. There's dozens of threads on MSI forums about this issue. I believe this motherboard has BIOS flashback so you can try that.

    I just went through this with one of my customers. An old DDR3 Socket AM3. Went through all the basic checks including BIOs reset and update. I even tested all of his components on a test bench and all of his components worked. CPU, Ram, GPU, PSU, etc. Pulled the entire system apart and everything worked except the MOBO. Even after putting some of my brand new components into his motherboard. Nothing worked on his MOBO. Great Video Greg!!!
    Like you, I do a lot of these basic repairs for free. I just hate being the barer of bad news. I did help him find a new MOBO and we are waiting on it in the mail. • @EdnovStormbrewer
    @EdnovStormbrewer ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Greg, you might say that it's not the BIOS even after putting in the 10th gen CPU. However, that it wouldn't hurt to see if it actually is. Since the motherboard is bricked and there is a red LED illuminating for the CPU leads to the BIOS being corrupted possibly. The first thing that allows the CPU to fire up first is the BIOS once it goes through its training process. Please if you can have someone who is trained in that department look at it to reflashing BIOS chips. I guarantee that should do the trick into getting it run again and even better keeping it off the hands of the smokers.

      Hi, I'm having the same problem as the pc in the video. Maybe you could help me with finding the problem? For a few days, whilst I've had the pc on the monitor would say no signal randomly. Whilst playing a game etc. I could still hear music from the game in the background. After a while, this would happen and I started to hear a buzzing sound from the speakers. I had to turn off the pc and turn it back on for the monitor to start again. Now, when I start the pc, the monitor is saying no signal. I haven't been able to fix this issue.
      I've recently got a new rtx 3070 gpu, I have a ryzen 5 3600 cpu, 16gb 3200 ram. And a 650w psu. The motherboard is a Asus rog strix b450. I'm getting a new cpu fan and 850w psu to upgrade the pc. I'm hoping that when I do the new build, it will be working as usual. I'm just not sure what could be causing the problem exactly. Sorry for the long message, I appreciate any help.

  • @dutchguy1975
    @dutchguy1975 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm 90% sure it is a bricked bios because of the double dash which means it cant even start checking everything so it halts before even attempting the first step.
    If there is a bios flashback option you could try to load a new one on it but chances are the bios chip itself got corrupted.

    A really, really simple suggestion to make your life much easier: Get yourself a cheap but reasonable power supply tester. You could save yourself a ton of doubt by just testing the power supply each time. That could also save you from putting replacement parts at risk if the power is not good. They aren't expensive and they would lower your risk (and add a good point to every video).

    You should get one of those eprom writers. I've seen a few youtubers that will remove the eprom, reprogram it with a current bios, re-solder it, then everything works. Not saying that's what the issue is, but would be cool. Fix or Flop After Dark! :D

    Hey Greg, do yourself a favor and buy an ozone generator off ebay. If you had put the PC in a cardboard box with a generator on for a couple hours (in your garage) and it would have been totally odorless. You shouldn't be subjecting yourself to that kind of torture.
    IMO every home owner should own one anyway. You can think of ozone as "air bleach" and it's handy for removing the smell from pretty much anything - old shoes, smoky stuff off ebay, etc.

    Use to work with broken computers that came from heavy smokers. You like REALLY smell it. Smokers have to realize that their PC is one giant Air Filter. The hardware will do a pretty good job in absorbing all that TAR. If you're going to smoke, don't do it beside your PC.

      I wouldn't call a motherboard replacement an easy fix, if anything it's one of the most tedious pc parts you would have to replace. Unplug all the power cables, unmount cpu cooler, cpu, gpu then unscrew the motherboard screws after that you have remount components plus rerout the cables again it's alot of effort

    G'day Greg,
    I don't understand why for Americans with broken parts Warranty isn't the first thought once you know what part is the problem, it always seems to be "I could probably have a look & see if I can fix it" even though as you said the Mobo is only 2-3months old, why not "I'll just contact the Seller or Manufacturer & get a replacement"?
    Here in Australia at PCCG or Scorptec where I shop if something dies I just ring them to explain the problem, they will then send an email with a postage label & in a week using standard post (even during Human Malware when my 1 of my Corsair Vengeance Pro RAM DIMMs died) I will have a replacement, plus with most reputable stores generally there isn't even a hassle getting a Warranty replacement within the 3 months after Warranty has ended.

    That's a 11900k chip, a.k.a. personal space heater. Even with an aio you need all the exhaust you can get. I did not see the top two exhaust working, only the rear one. In that configuration that thing is going to get mighty hot.

    i know that cigarettes kill people, but killing a mobo is extra value lol.
    I've been a repairer for years and the worst item i had to fix was a home stereo system, it was covered in brown thick sticky goo.
    Yes it was a heavy smokers stereo, my hands stuck to the sides.
    I used warm water and dish soap to remove it, there was a nice stereo under all that crap.

    In my almost 20yrs of PC building experiences the motherboard has been by far the most common week point of the system, either due to ram incompatibility, bios needing flashed or just physical failures of the motherboard parts (like USB, audio ports & video out connections)...never had CPU failure, although I had one degrade over time due to extreme heat over many years of use, it was a Pentium 4..."Thanks Intel" :/

    Can’t rule out a bios issue. Don’t put it past owners to try and update to the WRONG bios for a different motherboard or the like. Or even trying to update the bios and having a power loss during update will usually brick the mobo too

    For the CPU debug LED it will light red if there is any CPU issue. Mine nearly cooked when my AIO bricked, and while it would post and run, the light would turn red to indicate thermal max.

    I had a similar issue on my board, and for me the problem was that little black chip right below the CPU 8-pin plug on the right hand side. Not sure what that chip does, but I saw visible smoke come from it. After that the PC wouldn't post exactly the same way.
    I also noticed that little chip in your video has 2 little blueish paint marks on it, maybe MSI already worked on it once before?

  • @guilhermemuckbh

    The original motherboard, MSI, has three years warranty. The owner can most definitely RMA it and get a new one from the manufacturer. The MAG motherboard is clearly few tiers above Gigabyte's AC UD

    Hey Greg. It’s Ryan from RYNO TECH. I bought this same board last week and right out of the box had this same thing. Two dashes and cpu light. Sent it back for a gigabyte. I think MSi is having an issue with that particular line of board. As soon as I saw the two dashes I knew it was the board.
