I know Im asking the wrong place but does anyone know a way to get back into an instagram account?? I somehow lost the login password. I love any tricks you can give me.
This simplicity of this technique belies the end results, which is the ability to cover large amounts of rock structure with something realistic and uniform. I like how simply changing the colors can transform the rocks from a sedimentary type (usually light in color), to an igneous rock typified by dark granite. With the addition of some splattering using an airbrush, a flicked paint brush, or Krylon's Make It Stone spray paint to mimic the lighter flakes often seen in granite, or the subtle layering of various shades to portray deposits over time of sediments in sedimentary rocks, one can take the techniques in this clip, further. Currently, I see no other technique that offers a better base on to which one can develop the look of either type of rock. Kudos, Woodland Scenics.
Yes for the second rock colored, Kim used only stone gray and black. If you are asking about the third rock on the board, that particular rock was colored using black only, according to the following steps. 1. Three layers of Black Pigment diluted 1:16 letting it dry slightly between each coat. 2. Spray with Scenic Cement. Let dry. 3. Another layer of Black Pigment diluted 1:16 to accent the cracks and crevices. Happy Modeling!
Truly amazing results. I just gotta have a shot at going that!! wow. Made it look so easy, but I bet there is a lot of skill in it too! thanks for this video.
Hi, I bought the spray bottle with a combo package. Come to learn that there is a mist option with the nozzle that is able to be done by removing a cap on the nozzle. I think that many people are not aware of that, nor is the team that made the video apparently aware of the mist function. The mist would be better than a strong stream that splashes so much she has to shield herself from it splashing up. Why not use a nozzle that is more fully adjustable instead of just off, or on as mist or stream? See minute 4:24 of video.
Hello Chan, Made a mistake in the previous instructions I gave you about the black and gray rock. After the three layers of Black Pigment diluted 1:16 and spray with Scenic Cement, the final Black Pigment wash should be diluted 1:32, not 1:16. Then spray with Scenic Cement to seal. Sorry! Thanks!
What is the purpose of the scenic cement in between the initial coats and the final black wash? Would the final wash not work without the cement coating?
Hello friends, my English is not so good but ... Very good! In Brazil we use woodland scenics lot! If the videos were translated, would help a lot, even in Spanish. A big hug!
You can try the water colors, but we don’t think the results will be the same as what you saw on the video. Our Liquid Pigments are not paint and do not contain binders. They are actually liquid pigment that stain the castings, not paint it. If you have some spare castings, we would recommend you do some testing. If it looks satisfactory to you, then go for it! Happy Modeling!
Excellent tutorial! I'm new to modeling and was wondering if you can mix the pigments together to create unique colors? Also, I like the look of the rocks when being colored, but when dry they don't seem to be as vibrant. Can you use a matte or satin varnish to bring out some life in them?
Brilliant video and thank you. However, can you tell me if between secondary applications of different colour should each colour be allowed to dry first? Before sealing after last applying dominant colour, should that also be allowed to dry first.Thank you.Dave
+Dave Gibson When applying Earth Colors Liquid Pigment using our leopard spotting technique, you do not need to wait for the first application to dry to be able to apply the second. When you are done apply all Pigments then you will want to let it dry completely and then spray with the Scenic Cement to seal it. Happy Modeling!
Incredible!! Can't wait to try this. Question.. I have zero artistic talent, that being said, what colors should I use to paint rocks/cliffs to represent Alaska? In the Kenai mountains? Thank you!
Hello! After looking at pictures of the Kenai Mountains, we think that using Slate Gray (C1215), Stone Gray (C1218), and Black (C1220) Earth Colors™ Liquid Pigments will replicate the colors of the mountains well. To replicate the snow on the mountains, use Soft Flake Snow (SN140) or Flex Paste (C1205). I hope that helps! Happy modeling.
Woodland Scenics thank you so much for responding! I truly appreciate you taking the time to find out the information I needed. Top-notch customer service right there!
My rocks came out GREAT!!!!!! Wish I could post a picture on here! It took me three attempts to get everything just right, but now I have it down to a science! Thank you so much for your help, your recommended colors nailed the color of rock in the Kenai mountains!
That’s fantastic! We’re so glad everything worked out for you. We would love to see how it turned out. You can send pictures to us through Facebook (link in video description) or by using the “Contact Us” page on our Website. securewoodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/information/ContactUs?
Hello! We're glad you liked the video. Earth Colors Liquid Pigment works by staining the rock surface. Pigments are easily absorbed into castings because plaster is highly porous. Spraying with Scenic Cement (S191) first seals the surface of the rock and inhibits the pigments from being absorbed. Happy modeling!
That particular rock was colored using black only, according to the following steps: 1. Three layers of Black Pigment diluted 1:16 letting it dry slightly between each coat. 2. Spray with Scenic Cement. Let dry. 3. Another layer of Black Pigment diluted 1:16 to accent the cracks and crevices.
Thanks! It seems strange that that rock looks a lighter color than the other 2 rocks in the display, when it’s made with only black pigment. Maybe because the rock itself is white? I’m trying for a lighter gray color rock near a mountain top if you have any suggestions. Thanks again.
Many use Stone Gray for that. We also have a Slate Gray and Concrete. We recommend making test rocks before doing the finished version. Using different dilutions for more transparent vs opaque colors gives different effects. You can figure out the combination that will work best for you.
+Arthuro Mendoza - Sorry, no, Earth Colors are pigments, not paint, and they are designed specifically to be used on porous materials like plaster and wood.
+Woodland Scenics - Once you put the paint on top of the foam, it becomes sealed and will not accept the Pigments. We have not tested the Earth Color Liquid Pigments directly applied to the balsa foam, so we don't know how that will work. However, if you intended to cover the foam directly with plaster or Plaster Cloth as a base, then that would be a sufficient base on which to apply the Pigments. Hope this answers your question.
Hello, one question: why do you apply Scenic cement after painting? What is the target when you use It? I've always apply the pigments but witout Scenic cement.
Wow you made such a beautiful rock it has much resemblance with real. .. plz how did we get these paints and what did you spray after painting. I m interested to make it. ... please how did I get this spray and its name please.
The paints are our Earth Colors™ Liquid Pigments, and the spray is our Scenic Cement™ adhesive with a spray head from our Scenic Sprayer™. A list of colors used can be found in the description of the video. Here's a link to Scenic Cement: woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/Item/S191/page/1
Why do you spray it with scenic cement? Why use a adhesive as a sealer? Is because of the finish? Matte or gloss shine? I assume sealing it before the dominant color keeps it from soaking in and blending in with the base layers? Would Elmer's glue and water mix be about the same? I have slot of that already mixed.. Thank
Scenic Cement both seals the colors in place and encourages the Dominant Black Wash to seep into the cracks and crevices of the rock. When it concentrates in the cracks and crevices, the realism is enhanced. Scenic Cement is specially formulated and we know it works for this purpose. We cannot comment on your mixture because we do not know how it will react with our products.
@@ModelSceneryExpert thanks. That's helpful. I have a bottle ordered and awaiting delivery. TIP- use black weathering powder to darken the cracks even more FYI- clear spray paint and or white glue/water mix WILL NOT substitute for scenic cement. I've tried it. It seals the casting completely - not allowing the pigment to soak in. Matte clear spray paint does work good for a final sealer.
Slate Grey Earth Colors Liquid Pigment will look grey when applied to Mold-A-Scene. You will not see the tan color of the Mold-A-Scene. The Pigment will cover up the tan color, but it may not be as dark of a grey as compared to Pigment applied to a bright white plaster. When colored, Mold-A-Scene’s sandy texture will still be visible and the result will be a granular appearance, like you would see on weathered limestone formations. If colored with earth tones, such as Raw or Burnt Umber, it will look more like sandstone.
I just got a pre-owned white fiberglass waterfall....will your pigments most likely work on this...or do these usually have the seal coating to prevent your dyes from being effective....guessing the answer is yes on the sealant...?
Liquid Pigments work by staining your castings as opposed to painting them. Liquid Pigments are made to color plaster-based products, so we are not able to offer an option if they would work for the purposed intended.
Can I use these on a working waterfall? I bleached my pigment out of my fiberglass fountain but its glossy so im sure it wont soak in. I also have a very large concrete waterfall that is very bland. Any suggestions?
Autumn Kisner Our Earth Color Pigments where not designed for use on fiberglass or concrete waterfalls. The colors would be washed away by the waterfall, as our pigments do not contain binders. Sorry Autumn...we have never tested any sort of waterproof pigment, so we do not have any suggestions, other than to visit your local paint store/hardware store...hopefully, they can help you. Thanks for your interest in our products!
Thank you so much for your answering me. Your paint is just beautiful! It makes me want to make a faux wall or fireplace now just to be able to do this!
It appears that you left some areas white. They did not get covered in your application of the secondary and the primary cover, but at the end they appeared covered. Question: Do you leave a few small areas unpigmented or do you make sure all of the white surfaces have been pigmented before applying scenic cement?
We do not usually leave anything white, but that is something you can do if it creates a specific look you are trying to achieve. The decision is entirely up to the modeler.
Hello! the result is just so amazing, but I'm wondering...does that paint, together with the scenic cement, resist to water? what's the scenic cement made of? Thank you!
+ornitorrincosigiloso Although the Scenic Cement is not waterproof, it will seal the colors painted on the rock and will resist any additional color you would want to put on the rocks. FYI - Our products are not waterproof, and are meant for interior use only. I am sorry, but I cannot list the Scenic Cement ingredients. The formula is proprietary. Hope this helps!
oh ok, no prob! And what do you use if you wanna make a river or a waterfall or some kind of running water? what products do you use for turn waterproof the surfaces? thank you!
+ornitorrincosigiloso - We do not have any products that will work to create a river/waterfall feature with real water. Our products are not waterproof. Here is a link to a video that used modeling techniques similar to ours, but with products that are compatible with real water. Hope this helps! th-cam.com/video/wBMbnpLWW10/w-d-xo.html
Great video! I'll try this if i get hold of the items. Just one question. How well does the Scenics Cement hold water? I mean can you spray water on the fake rock and the result won't change?
Scenic Cement is an excellent sealer and can tolerate a fair amount water spray. However, it will not withstand immersion or a constant water spray. If we better understood what you are wanting to accomplish, we could more thoroughly answer your question. Hope this helps!

To create this rich red rock look, we recommend coloring the rocks all over with a light wash of Burnt Umber. In the patches where the rocks are less red, use a Stone Grey wash. The light Burnt Umber and Stone Grey washes would be considered the “secondary” washes. Let these dry. Then seal the colors in with Scenic Cement and let dry. Then, make another darker wash with Burnt Umber and coat the whole rock with it. This would be considered the “dominant” color wash. Let it dry. Seal it again with Scenic Cement. Keep applying the dark Burnt Umber wash, letting it dry and sealing it with Scenic Cement until the desired color is achieved.
This is not the product's intended purpose and we have not tested this. We cannot say what the results would be. If you would like to press forward with trying the Earth Colors Liquid Pigments, we recommend doing a test first.
Hi, great video! I'm working on a project and wanted some more information on rock molds. Would you have any suggestions on how to create letters to look like a rock surface?
Our Carving Plaster that will be released with our new terrain products in early March would be a great solution to this issue! The Carving Plaster could be poured into your preferred Woodland Scenics Rock Mold, then carved into letter shapes after the appropriate drying time.
We thoroughly test our product for their intended use and have not tested it in this manner. Our products are not manufactured to be water proof. Our products are designed for layouts.
We use plaster with our Rock Molds. If you visit the page at the link below, you can read the instructions to find a list of recommended plasters. woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/Item/C1244/page/1
We're sorry. We do not have a fluent Spanish speaker at the company, and the online translator isn't clear on your question. It's hard to understand exactly what you are asking. If you are asking what the adhesive is, it is a product called Scenic Cement.
Earth Colors Liquid Pigment (C1215-C1223) colors like stain. They are easily absorbed into porous surfaces, such as Plaster Cloth and Plaster-based products. We fully test our products for their designed use. Since we have not tested it on concrete manufactured stone, we cannot offer an opinion as to how it would perform.
Hey guys I'm sorry but I'm really lazy! I've been working on a diorama of a futuristic overgrown city with vines and bushes. Do you have a video that shows how to do vines or things that look as if it's overgrown on a rock or object? If so a link would be great thanks :)
Okay Mr. Lazy Megaspartan Bloks :-) We'd be glad to help you out. Check the following video. It is a great all round scenery video for building scenery from the beginning, but for your purposes...start at about 14:00. Matt will begin to talk about our product Foliage. You can see how he uses it both for ground cover and as a vine-like covering for rock faces. Keep in mind that any technique you use him using on a horizontal surface, you can use vertically also to landscape rock faces, bluffs, etc... Hope this helps and Happy Modeling! Why do you spray Scenic Cement on the rock before you apply the black wash? Doesn't this just create another unnecessary step? Also, in the Scenery Manual, it says that once you seal with Scenic Cement, the rock won't accept washes. How did you get the black wash to be absorbed even after applying the first coating of Scenic Cement?
In an effort to give modelers the most realistic look when modeling scenery, we are continually testing various methods for doing all kinds of modeling techniques...even the ones we have already recommended. The information in the video represents our most recent application recommendation. We feel that spraying the casting with Scenic Cement prior to the Black wash step accentuates the cracks & crevices, rather than the having the rock absorb the Black wash.
Our products are not created to be used with real water. Our products are water-soluble and they don’t have binders in them, so they won’t work well with real water.
When the mixing directions on the liquid pigment state 1 part pigment, 16 parts water ratio. You will pick a certain measurement, like 1 ounce, then you would mix 1-ounce pigment to 16 ounces of water.

+Woodland Scenics Those are some really great videos!! Keep them coming! l recently started getting interested in model sceneries.l am a beginner who has never worked with foam before,so l would like to ask you something:what is the best kind of material to use when gluing all the polysterine pieces together? Something that will help maintain the detail of the foam curves and everything.l live in Europe,so l don't know where to find all these products you mention in your video.l think what you put is some kind of plaster.ls it special or can it be any kind of plaster? Thanks in advance! :D Liked and subscribed! ;)
+John Diosmos To adhere foam together try using our Foam Tack Glue (ST1444). It is specially formulated for foam and also effective on wood and cork after sanding. Foam Tack Glue dries clear, is high-tack, non-toxic, and water soluble. No need to worry about trying to get products. We do ship internationally; however, it is usually less expensive to buy them at your local hobby shop. Follow this link, woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/information/DealerSearch?ws, to find the one nearest you. For our rocks in this video we used our Faucet Rock Mold (C1244). For plaster you can use any type, we have also made rock molds out of Lightweight Hydrocal (C1201) and Latex Rubber (C1204). Thanks for subscribing to our page! Good luck as you begin modeling!
It has not been tested with that material, so we honestly cannot say. We recommend doing a test before committing it to a final product, if you wish to try.
Plastic is not the intended use for the pigments and has not been tested. We cannot recommend this or say what will happen as a result. You can always do a test before committing it permanently to a project.

NICE
Greetings! would you be so kind as to tell us what rock mold (item number) was used in this video demonstration? Thank you!
Hello! the result is just so amazing, but I'm wondering...does that paint, together with the scenic cement, resist to water? what's the scenic cement made of?

Hi,Thank for the video..
Does the Woodland Scenic Cement is diluted??? If so in what proportions
Thank's for the answer and greetings from Switzerland
+Giroud Tristan Hello! Greetings from the U.S.! Scenic Cement is ready to use...no diluting is necessary.
Thank you!!
Can you use these paints on foam backgrounds for reptile vivariums safely?
This is not a use our product was designed for. We have not tested this so we cannot recommend it.
@@ModelSceneryExpert No problem. Thanks for the fast reply. Hey, you know, you should test it to know for sure. This stuff would be a hit. Peace!
Is the base material plaster? Is the base color white paint or Woodland white pigment?
The rocks were made with Lightweight Hydrocal. There is no base pigment. That is simply the color of the dry plaster.
Thank you, great video.
Hope this helps!
awsome!!!!
Parabéns, ficaram perfeitas as rochas! Onde compro este material aqui no Brasil (Brazil)?

Obrigado, pelo retorno. Vou procurar me informar para importar os produtos Woodland Scenics!!! O ferromodelismo foi um grande aliado para passar esta terrível pandemia!!! Thank's!
You should mention that this is for the desert southwest.
What rock mold did you use to make those castings?
+TheRealZuikaku2 We used the Facet Rock (C1244) rock mold. Thanks for commenting and good luck modeling!
Would the liquid pigments work on top of a primed piece of plastic?
Hi Sara, Our liquid pigments work as a stain, and are made to color
plaster-based products.
Is there a combination out there that can model the "red cliffs" of Dawlish Warren?
To create this rich red rock look, we recommend coloring the rocks all over with a light wash of Burnt Umber. In the patches where the rocks are less red, use a Stone Grey wash. The light Burnt Umber and Stone Grey washes would be considered the “secondary” washes. Let these dry. Then seal the colors in with Scenic Cement and let dry. Then, make another darker wash with Burnt Umber and coat the whole rock with it. This would be considered the “dominant” color wash. Let it dry. Seal it again with Scenic Cement. Keep applying the dark Burnt Umber wash, letting it dry and sealing it with Scenic Cement until the
desired color is achieved.
Thank you very much, I'll definitely use that technique for my N scale layout.
never mind had my glasses off lol
Could this be used on cement for rock coloring
This is not the product's intended purpose and we have not tested this. We cannot say what the results would be. If you would like to press forward with trying the Earth Colors Liquid Pigments, we recommend doing a test first.
👍
Thanks friend for consultation
De nada!
Wondering why wouldn’t I find paint products from your website?
Those paint that you use in the video.
These are called Earth Colors Liquid Pigments. You can find them here on our website: woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/category/Pigments
Hm. Ok, I'll keep a look out for it. Thanks so much!
does anyone knows why my blackwash leaves a white stain in the cracks¿¿
do you add pigment to water?
Pigments are diluted with water. This is explained at 0:48 to 1:10. The dilution ratios pop up at the minute mark.
is okay if i used water color paint?
Good job looks good
How long do you let dry between applications?
Hello! It is recommended to wait approximately 3-4 minutes for the plaster Rock to dry between applications. Happy modeling!
Hi is ur rock made in solid cement?
No. Our rocks are made with Lightweight Hydrocal Plaster and our rock molds.
Hello, please tell me what kind of spray?
The sealant is Scenic Cement (S191) woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/item/S191
Is this waterproof? If not is there a way too?
We thoroughly test our product for their intended use and have not tested it in this manner. Our products are not manufactured to be water proof. Our products are designed for layouts.
Easy to do on large rock designs. Not so easy on the N scale model railroad.
What are the rock forms made from ? Plaster or paper Mache ?
We use plaster with our Rock Molds. If you visit the page at the link below, you can read the instructions to find a list of recommended plasters. woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/Item/C1244/page/1
Hola, una pregunta, que liquido tiene en el Spray y para sirve, saludos.
We're sorry. We do not have a fluent Spanish speaker at the company, and the online translator isn't clear on your question. It's hard to understand exactly what you are asking. If you are asking what the adhesive is, it is a product called Scenic Cement.
Hello one question,
What liquid do you have in the Spray and to serve, greetings.
Scenic Cement (S191) is the liquid.
estos colores se pueden usar para pintar piedra manufacturada de concreto
Earth Colors Liquid Pigment (C1215-C1223) colors like stain. They are easily absorbed into porous surfaces, such as Plaster
Cloth and Plaster-based products.

***** Thanks for the help :)
I just buy your earth colors kit and it's doesn't work as the video... Why? Any explanation? Does the plaster has to be totaly dryed? Thanks
Based on the question about plaster, Earth Color Liquid Pigments will not work correctly unless the plaster is completely dry.
Can you color plaster of paris
We do not test products other than on our own and are not able to offer advice on the compatibility of other products with our system.
Can this be used on a concrete water fall?
Our products are not created to be used with real water. Our products are water-soluble and they don’t have binders in them, so they won’t work well with real water.
Question: How do I do the 1 Part Pigment, 16 Parts Water ratio?
When the mixing directions on the liquid pigment state 1 part pigment, 16 parts water ratio. You will pick a certain measurement, like 1 ounce, then you would mix 1-ounce pigment to 16 ounces of water.
Okay. Thank you

Are the pigments in the water iron oxide and titanium oxide etc. ?

Are these acrylic pigments?
Earth Colors Liquid Pigments are not actual paints; they are pigments.
Can it work on modelling clay?
It has not been tested with that material, so we honestly cannot say. We recommend doing a test before committing it to a final product, if you wish to try.
@@ModelSceneryExpert I will try it thank you kindly ❤️😊
will this work on plastic?
Plastic is not the intended use for the pigments and has not been tested. We cannot recommend this or say what will happen as a result. You can always do a test before committing it permanently to a project.
Thanks!!
Good day, your product can paint artificial stones to decorate the interior and exterior of a house, I want to be sure that the paint will not come out, and if so how can I buy your product I live in Ecuador.
thank you
Hello Walter! So sorry, but our Liquid Pigments are for Scale Modeling and not intended for home use.
Hola Walter! Así que lo siento, pero nuestros pigmentos líquidos no están diseñados para uso en el hogar.
Hello, painting is permamente that time, and that is the white liquid that made and served.
Walter Onofre I am sorry, I am not sure what you are asking.
Lo siento, no estoy seguro de lo que estás pidiendo.
