    whats amazing is I'm a critter who never saw this, and didn't know it was coming, but Orly was so perfect of a character that I didn't even question his inclusion one bit!

      I think it was originally aired one afternoon before talks. I only watched it because I'm a fairly new critter and going back through all their old videos on TH-cam and finding interesting hints and connections 😉

      This is why the community loves Orly so much. It was Critical Roles first community made npc and one of the best and most colorful crewmembers on the Balleater

      @@roguishowl3915 hi, this was from a special they did before talks - called Fireside Chat, and there are a couple of spoilers but if you are past that point it's great. I also really love talks and as I catch up on campaign 2 they are a wonderful addition to the episode.

    It’s crazy he was meant to be some temporary character for the Mighty Nein to meet, but ended up becoming an important, semi-permanent character for them.

      He's more than semi-permanent. He's a favorite add-on the the M9! He's heavily added in the reunion episode, even after they supposedly send him off he still followed them 🤣🤣🤣

    I wasn't even phased by Orley's stutter. His voice always felt like he was a gnarled old creature, slow to start, so the stutter worked perfectly into that impression. It takes a moment for the gears to turn and let his voice out, but when he did he always had something worth hearing to say.

    I got a little emotional at the fact how Matt gave a stutter so much respect and in no way used it like how many media outlets use stutters or accent for comedy or humor purposes

    Matt is amazing. That initial try at Orly was a dive into his mind, grabbing at something to influence this voice. To see what it developed into highlights the care Matt has for his craft. Orly during campaign was amazing.

    It was so awesome seeing a Cajun character in CR, I was absolutely glued to the screen in disbelief when I heard Matt’s attempt at the accent 😂 c’est très bien pour un Floridien, I guess. Still couldn’t be more over the moon about it!

    I wonder if we'll ever get to find out his folk hero origins in the show. We've run into pretty much all the rest of the initial aspects of his creation except that one. There have been the teeniest of hints of his travels as a younger Tortle when he was talking to Jester about where and how he learned to tattoo magic into people I wonder if that's a part of it.

      Hmmm... Your right. I guess it seemed that everyone around the port knew him but didn't go into much more... Maybe an Orly origin story one shot where they all play sailors?

      @@birdscritters Maybe, except the way Matt is it would never be about him it would be an ensemble with Orly at the back lol.
      So maybe one day Bell's Hells, or the future C4 group run into some trouble early on and an old tortle is nearby in his retirement and helps out and they finally ask him some personal questions like they should have in C2!
      Or we just get an Orly book one day lol. Orly Origins! I'd be cool with that.

    No Tortles in my homebrew world, but I really like Orly. He is amazing. I knew where he came from, and I find him one of the best NPCs with Victor, Pumat, Gilmore and the Goblin Moorbounder Trainer.

    A tortle witha stammer and a tattoomasterblaster. Cool! First I want to thank you fot the unnumourable times you were the D&Dmaster on youtube. Your voice helped me true many days when I was sick and gave me the courage to become a writer (thriller-horror & fantasy with a LGTBQ+ twist). In time I will become a stryteller in the library and maybe some day I will go to the land of D&D. Yes I and 3 other writers are busy with a book. And I have plans for more stories.

      As a new critter I totally understand how people skip these additional conversations, but I love them sooooo much as it reveals so many cool hidden details in how the characters and the game works!

    This is wild knowing this was how Orly was created! I love "random" ideas coming together to pick a character and their traits together. I love doing that for characters myself and seeing how fast I always get ideas for their backstory, how to play them, little quirks they have. Characters sometimes write themselves, and this is such a cool way to jump start it

    Wait, was this actually something that happened live before the appearance of Orly? Oh man, it was great. They loved the whole attitude of how Orly was played out if I remember. Watching him do his one-eyed thing. I remember watching that episode, since I didn't see it when it originally came out, and certainly didn't see this.

    Orly's last name is Skiffback. Skiff is a type of small boat. So did he get his name after or before he became a seafarer? Was it given at birth or adopted later?

      Or if he came up with it in the same way characters in Redwall are named, it could just be a Tortle surname, because their shells look like small boats.

    It sounds like an interesting character. I am unfamiliar with a lot of Critical Role but I crossed over following the delightfully chaotic Brennan Lee Mulligan. Loved your appearance as Krazthum and impatiently await "The Quest for Hamhead."
    This looks like an interesting character in the making. I appreciate inviting the audience in by having them help shape a character, giving them something to look forward to in the campaign. You make this all look so fun! ☺

      Orly was an npc created by the community as part of a Critical Role fundraising event for A26LA (a charity they have supported since the beginning of the stream) years ago and became a recurring character in campaign 2.
      I thought I'd edit this together as many newer fans don't always know this, and I'm glad you enjoyed it!

    I didn't know he was made by a poll, thats kind of neat. Did the cast know to interact with that character or what would have happened if they hadn't decided to ask him questions at the tavern I wonder. I'm curious how far the dm will go to ensure certain characters are met. Man I miss C2, really enjoying the current reunion episode.

    Didn't see anything Bard out of Orly. He does tattoo and he is on the ship all the time. Did he ever show, or imply any bardic feature?

      When they first met him he used his bagpipes in the bar, just for effect - and the critical role wiki lists some bard spells... Maybe I need to edit a follow up?
