Love this lesson, Antonia. The weather makes for a great topic of conversation :-) Especially helpful this time is the phonetic spelling. Just one very small thing: when speaking of hurricanes, you say they are not that popular in Russia. But I think you mean they are not that common. I don't think anyone enjoys a hurricane, so I guess they wouldn't be popular anywhere :-)
Your accent is really good. When you say "In our country (hurricanes) are not that popular" means that the Russian people don't like them very much. What you probably meant was that they are not that "common" or "frequent". Did you mean "hurricane" or "tornado"? In the U.S. we have both and they both are destructive, but they are entirely different phenomena.
+Joel Boone yeah, you are absolutely right! I guess when I explain Russian I don't pay so much attention to my English. Shame on me... p.s. OK, what is the difference between these two? "Hurricane" and "tornado".
+Antonia Romaker - English and Russian online A tornado usually forms and ends over land and develops into a fierce spinning vortex funnel shape) that moves fast and causes destruction over the path it takes. They are usually no more than 1/4 mile wide and only last a few hours but cause devastation to anything they hit. They look like a dark funnel that most people have seen photos of. Most of the damage is caused by wind. A hurricane almost always begins over warm water off the west coast of Africa and grows as it drifts across the central Atlantic ocean. They can grow to enormous size, maybe 200 times the size of a tornado (Hurricanes Katrina and Andrew and Camille for example) The damage occurs when they veer north into the Gulf Coast of America or west into northern Mexico. They have very high winds which can last for several days because the storm is so huge. They cause wind damage but most of the damage is caused by torrential rains and flooding. Once they reach landfall they start to die down but that can take two or three days. It is unlikely that anyone living in Russia ever saw a hurricane because the coastline of Russia is surrounded by very cold waters. You need a large body of warm water for a hurricane to form. Thank you for your classes which are so fun and informative.
You're the best Antonia. You're lessons as fun as didactic.
Thank you very much! :)
