I seen this movie for my first time about one year ago (2022). Amazing. They don't make movies like this today. The movie soundtrack kept me tuned in at the beginning credits ... little did I know at the time that it would include Marty Robbins singing (a classic). Thanks Turner Movie Classics. The talent is endless in this movie. Mr. Borgnine no doubt was at his finest in this movie. Lee Marvin, one of the greats. And in 1973 Keith Carradine made an impressive introduction to himself as an actor among his father and brothers. Thanks for sharing as I was only 4 years old when this movie was released.
Ernest Borgnine was so well liked as a "father-like" persona due to his role on McHale's Navy. But here, he played a rough, despicable character to the hilt! Very talented.
You can't really say that someone that won an Oscar was under rated, but if anyone didn't get the continued recognition and praise he deserved then it was Ernest Borgnine
I love this movie I'm watching it right now it took me forever to find it on DVD finally found a copy for $35. I literally grew up on the Tracks this movie 🎥 was filmed on they did such a great job of capturing early morning Oregon essence.
Willy Jackson got rest his soul was the young man from cottage Grove Oregon that was the one that Lee Marvin hit with the chicken when the boys were rushing him to steal his chicken.
In his ‘ on the bus’ video- Borgnine talks about how much fun he had with Lee Marvin making this movie a w close friends they were. The last scene took 30 days to film and they both had real bruises at the completion… a great classic.
I remember watching this as a kid with my grandpa in the 1990s. It stuck with me only because of that scene where Ernest borgnine is dragging the chain under the train and it's bouncing up and smacking the guy holding on underneath. I think that's the only part of the movie I can recall since I haven't seen it since I was 8 . I asked my grandpa if that would hurt and he said " you bet your ass it would!"
I think they ruined the trailer, and therefor the movie for all who saw the trailer first, by having Shack shown being 'bested' @0:33 and during the final fight. That sort of knocks down the image of Shack and the potency of the struggle of wills. I'm glad I did not see the trailer until after I watched the movie a few times.

I know! Have you seen "Bad Day At Blackrock?" Him and Spencer Tracy. Amazing!
And Lee Marvin too especially as a USMC scout sniper on Saipan 4th Marine Division
