  • How did contemporary society’s focus on identity come about? On October 30 renowned political scientist Yascha Mounk comes to Intelligence Squared to warn that while an appreciation for the diverse culture and heritage of minorities is healthy, in the past decade it has transformed into an obsession with group identity in all its forms. Setting out the ideas in his new book The Identity Trap, he will explain the origin of these ideas, how they grew to be so powerful, and argue that their application to areas from education to public policy - while well intentioned - is proving to be deeply counterproductive. And he will set out his own universalist vision for how we can make progress towards genuine equality.

    I like the topic but I wish the interviewer would stop mmmming and grunting and let Yascha speak without so many interruptions by grunting continuously 🙄 I had to turn it off after about 15-16 mins...

      He stops after not too much longer (around 19-20mins in). I think it was mainly problematic because the interviewer's mic was much louder than the person who was being interviewed. It's well worth watching though.

    Yascha completely misrepresents Foucault, by suggesting that Foucaults ideas were the ideology of independence movements after colonialism. It’s a shame because he has an interesting thesis.

    What is wrong with populisum as defines as "a political approach that strives to appeal to ordinary people who feel that their concerns are disregarded by established elite groups."

    • @zwerko
      @zwerko 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Because 'ordinary people' often don't have the capacity, means or time to consider issues and consequences past their immediate pressing needs. If your prime goal of action is to appeal to that level, your politics (and consequent policies) is short-sighted at best, self-serving at worst. It's for the same reason we moved from personal vendettas to (hopefully) impartial court systems.

      @zwerko Interesting view. Not sure if you are joking. That said if ordinary people are as stated, then maybe we should reconsider their right to vote. Just a thought.

      What's wrong with it is that it's not actually popular but a result of bad faith actors both foreign state and corporate using advertising and control of media to interfere with the democratic process.

    Tomiwa, thank you for your sincerity. That feeling that you have been having at night, that makes you feel like something is missing in your conversations is the following where identity is concerned: The time for you to wake up to your ancient original indigenous sovereign powerfulle bloodline and bearthright is now. We are not [NEGRO, BLACK, COLORED, AFRICAN AMERICAN]. We are ancient original indigenous nobility (thus the nobility clause in the Constitution for the United States). Your true identity is proclaimed throughout the Congress and Parliaments earthwide. Who you really are is stated clearly in the law at all lands. Many appeal to "feelings" and "beliefs" to divert from the law but the law is clear and plain regarding the original indigenous heirs to all land, all natural resources and all commerce...You. Peace to you. We love you and we are looking forward to connecting with you face to face at your will.
