    Good call on the weather delay; as we get older, we sometimes get wiser. Hope the sun came back out eventually.

      Hi Jim, many thanks for the comment and yes, if I'd been in a hurry then maybe... but I wasn't so could easily make the choice

    Finished a 6 day ride of the West Virginia, Virginia and North Carolina mountains last Monday (10/17) with a combination of camping and hoteling. Light rain two of those days. Beautiful time of the year for riding there though.

    That hotel is in my part of the world and always wondered what the food was like. Seemed to me it looked decent so may stop for lunch sometime.

    An amber weather warning when you're on a motorcycle is not what you want! Good that you have the flexibility to stay put in warm and dry accommodation when the need arises. I'm looking forward to the Scotland content and trust that you enjoyed the NC500 in spite of the late in the season start. Thanks for the update.

    • @bikingtravels
      @bikingtravels  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Quentin, yes the NC500 is a fantastic route, and truly coastal. Even in the rain and mirk the scenery and landscapes are beautiful and the road great for motorcycling

    You’re right about the 20mph limits Nick. I rode the A7 last year and was surprised how long the limits were, especially on a major trunk road. Unnecessary really, as I reckon it would just lead to a lack of concentration, and even encourage drivers to have a look at their phones etc.
    There were some installed near me, but they were gone within a few weeks. There’s a right place for them, but not on a major route.

    • @bikingtravels
      @bikingtravels  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Steve, yes, there were some pretty long stretches, I wonder if they become more of the norm, what the speed limit near schools would be dropped to.

    • @AkaWilf
      @AkaWilf 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bikingtravels we’ve got enough 30 & 40 limits, never mind 20 limits! I can cope with 50mph at my age though. Plus I only ride mid-sized bikes (500X & 650 Versys), and a couple of Honda scooters (300 & 350cc).

    I think you made the right choice to have a day off as such, bikes and extreme weather are not the best combination! Besides it's good to have a day to recharge the human batteries as well as device batteries! lol.

    How have you found the Shad saddle bag supports? I see that it looks like you are using something different now. This route looks like a lot of fun. I am doing a road trip up to the north east of Scotland in December. In a car not on my bike but still looking forward to it.

      Hi person X, the Shad rails are not designed for the Lomo bags I used so on day 3 of my 6 week European trip I burnt a hole in one of the bags on the exhaust which caused me issues. I like the Lomo bags so replaced them but also replaced the Shad rails with Outback Motortek Pannier rack and Rear rack (including exhaust heat shield). I might have got away with just the exhaust shield but did not want to take the risk. Enjoy your road trip!

      @@bikingtravels Thank you for your reply Nick. Damn! I was keen to get those Shad racks (I also have Lomo panniers) as they are simple and inexpensive. It looks like I might have to bite the bullet and get some full on racks like the Outbacks. I was hoping to avoid this as they are very expensive here in Oz. I hope Scotland is treating you well. One of the most beautiful places in the world up north there.

    How did you find your satnav at finding nice routs avoiding busy roads?

    • @bikingtravels
      @bikingtravels  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Donna, pretty good using Garmin Adventurous Routing on the Zumo XT directly on the device itself. Although it does sometimes take you through the odd housing estate rather than the highway through it.

    Hi Nick,
    what windscreen are you using? I installed the puig but still got some buffetting. thx

    • @bikingtravels
      @bikingtravels  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I stuck with the OEM just raised to it's highest setting. There is still buffeting toward the top of the visor instead of from the bottom of the visor up (I'm 6ft / 183CM)

    How often did you lube the chain on these trips, Nick?

    • @bikingtravels
      @bikingtravels  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Len, not enough on this trip I'm afraid. On the trip round Europe I was fairly diligent and regularly lubed the chain, especially when I was staying somewhere with a solid road surface. But... this trip, I ran out of lube and replaced it later in the trip, but with the amount of rain, grit and silt (and mountains?) I think I've killed my chain, it is now on the last adjustments with 10k miles on the clock. That "might" be normal but I don't have a benchmark to check against, however, I think it is a little on the low side. I don't have a centre stand on the bike due to the engine bars using that mounting so it is a bit of a faff rolling the bike along, applying lube, rolling the bike along... repeat. At home, I have a little roller device (I think it was an Oxford Products item) that allows the wheel to turn which makes it easier. Bottom line, not enough on this trip!

      @@bikingtravels Sounds like you would benefit from a Scottoiler or similar for your next long trip. I've had one fitted to my Triumph for years and it has served me well. Intending to fit one on the CB500X when I get time. Still enjoying your GB trip, btw, and hoping the weather was kinder to you when you got even further north.
