Dentro da nossa série de Vídeos de Salsa, é com muito gosto que lhes trago um clip de uma das minhas bandas prediletas: a de Poncho Sanchez.
Penso que Poncho é, na atualidade, o diretor de uma das melhores agrupações da música latina, nadando tanto em águas jazzísticas como salseras. No entanto, penso também que ele sofre um certo preconceito por parte de alguns críticos, por não ser de origem cubana ou porto-riquenha (Poncho é nascido no Texas, filho de mexicanos).
Só não se deve esquecer que Poncho foi discípulo de Mongo Santamaría e estudioso de sua obra. Também tem grande influência de Willie Bobo, e por muitos anos, antes de formar seu próprio grupo, foi conguero da banda de Cal Tjader, um nome consagrado do jazz latino.
Ao ouvir muitos dos discos de Poncho Sanchez, é que me ponho a refletir onde é que realmente está o limite entre o jazz latino e a Salsa, haja visto que seus temas, mesmo os mais orientados em direção ao jazz são carregados de swing, e bastante dançantes.
Outra coisa de se admirar é a relação que Poncho mantém com sua gravadora, a Concord Records, onde está desde 1982 (sem contar o tempo em que tocou com Cal Tjader). São raros os casos de tão grande fidelidade entre um artista e uma empresa discográfica. Mas Poncho está certo: seus discos estão entre os mais bem gravados da música latina.
A música que escolhemos é "Coco Mai Mai". Existem na verdade dois temas diferentes com esse mesmo nome: O tradicional tema cubano composto por Ignácio Piñeiro e gravado pela primeira vez com o Septeto Nacional, e que outros grupos a gravaram ao longo dos anos, como o Conjunto Casino, Sierra Maestra e o Septeto Turquino. No entanto, essa versão de Poncho Sanchez é de autoria de Estanislao Servia. Também a gravaram Larry Harlow e Jack Costanzo, mas a versão que eu mais gosto é do grupo americano Ocho, gravada nos anos 70, além da de Poncho, lançada em 1987 no CD "Fuerte".
Já esta versão, gravada ao vivo no clube noturno Kimball's East, em Emeryville (Califórnia), está no CD de 1991 "A Night At Kimball's East". A data exata da gravação é 8 de dezembro de 1990. O concerto rendeu um segundo disco, intitulado "Bailar: A Night With Poncho Sanchez", lançado depois que o primeiro foi indicado ao Grammy.
Da banda que está no vídeo, hoje em dia só estão o baixista Tony Banda e o pianista David Torres. Completam o time: Ramon Banda (timbales), José "Papo" Rodríguez (bongô), Arturo Velasco (trombone), Sal Cracchiolo (trompete) e Gene Burkert (saxofone).

They were just exceptional. The Fenómenal Sal Cricchiolo on trumpet, Banda brothers on base and timbales, Velasco on trumpet, Gene Burkert on saxophone, papo Rodriguez on bongó , David Torres piano, Poncho congas, and me the greatest fan of all.
Poncho es un músico completo. Canta, toca, dirige, produce un fuera de serie.

What a beautiful song! The person who took the video has an eye for the moment and beauty. I love to see PONCHO SANCHEZ doing what he does best, playing the conga. One cannot fail to notice and enjoy the superb dancing by the three horn players! Very elegant indeed.
Poncho played my Family's club back in1988, by far this time was the best time for the band and Poncho! I remember buying all Ponchos CD's from Lonny back then! Great times and great music! Thank you Poncho!

l remember the first time l saw Poncho's band in the 80's when his first Concord LP "sonando" came out
l went to see him in east LA at an outdoor church festival, l took a seat in the middle of the venue and it took a while for the band to start, they couldn't get the sound together, when poncho counted off the first tune, l got chills man!!! whooooo!

Poncho tiene el mismo suing de los Cubanos del solar. Todo lo que hace es un fuerte sentimiento. Translation, Poncho has the same suing that the Afro Cubans from the solares in Cuba have, being that the sound and the clave come from Afro Cubans it is pleasing to hear this music expressed so soulfully by someone born in another country and culture, it shows how powerful the music is, if we let it, it will join us all as one even though from different directions.

"Coco Mai Mai" es una composicion del cubano Ignacio Piñeiro (El Poeta del Son) y aqui les dejo una version del Septeto Nacional agrupacion que fundó el mencionado compositor en 1929 en la Habana. La grabacion fue realizada en Santiago de Cuba en 1989 pero la version original es de los años 30.
¿Será que Poncho NO sabía que existia ya una antigua composicion cubana con tal titulo?

I had the most amazing experience to see this live at the former kimballs east. A memorable evening. Beautiful maestro your are the best!
I was there that night with a group of friends dancing the night away. I don't remember but I do remember this night just dancing LOL!!! They were recording this event as part of a CD's package live recording... It was a really good Two show night, two sets each.

En realidad, existen dos temas con el título "Coco Mai Mai". El primero, como bien observas, es una composición de Ignacio Piñeiro, de 1929. El segundo, cuya letra nada tiene que ver con la obra de Piñeiro, es de autoría de otro cubano, Estanislao Servia. Este 'segundo Coco Mai Mai' fue grabado por muchas orquestas, entre las cuales están la de Jack Costanzo, Larry Harlow, Ocho, Grupo Tambó y, por supuesto, Poncho Sanchez.
