While my first real 3D outing of Mario was Super Mario 64, I loved both Galaxy's on the Wii as well, though I always did have a slight preference for Galaxy 2. The DS/Wii era really was a golden age.
I think I might prefer Galaxy 2 as well, but I got kinda caught by surprise by just how good the levels in 1 were so it'll be interesting to compare the two!
It’s been too long for me to actually remember most of the levels, but I adored the hub world in Galaxy 2, with all of its unlockable character and whatnot, I love it when any game does that.
Mario galaxy is my favorite mario game, it is such a joy to play and every world is amazing in different ways. While I'm not a big 3d mario guy, I don't like mario 64 that much and I haven't played sunshine a lot, galaxy stands as one of my favorite games period
Great video. Although you clearly really love this game, I think it's good that you still talked about the few problems you had with it. Galaxy is often hailed as a "perfect game" by Mario fans, but I never felt it deserved that title, and everything about the game is fresh in my mind since I just 100% completed it for the second time. I do genuinely enjoy the game and I still think it's a great game, but I think it has a lot of issues that Galaxy 2 fixed. You said that 64 and Sunshine had a lot of padding, which is definitely true, but I think Galaxy is just as bad as those games, if not maybe even worse. The most obvious example is the prankster comets, which are almost all extremely lazy, especially the speed run ones where they just slapped a timer on it and called it a day. The only ones I thought were good were the cosmic races and SOME of the purple coin missions. Usually the timed purple coin missions were fun, but basically anything else was pure trash. Seriously, I was very surprised to see you only said you disliked one of them. The freezeflame one was literally making you reach both peaks of the mountain, basically making you play 2 shitty, tedious versions of previous stars. I also hated the desert one and the ship one. Galaxy's controls were just not made with exploration in mind because of how slow they are, and putting ONLY 100 coins made it so much more tedious than it could have been. And it's not just the prankster comets that were obvious padding, many of the secret stars were as well. I remember one of them where all you had to do was kill 20 goombas on a giant yoshi planet. And it was annoying in Battlerock where they basically make you play the entire first star again just to save Luigi. Overall, the game is filled with original stuff, but it was clearly a rushed game. Maybe not as rushed as 64 or Sunshine, but they clearly padded the shit out of the game to get it to 120 stars when it would have been better to just have 90 or so. Another thing I dislike are the controls. You said 64 felt sluggish but I don't really get how that was the case. And Sunshine is really fast, yeah, but if you want to go slow you can just not tilt all the way on the analog stick, so I don't have a problem with it. I guess it's true that making Mario go where you want him to go is pretty easy in Galaxy, but I don't think that's the only important thing when it comes to controls. In 64 and Sunshine, the controls were really fast, and the long jump and dive were both ways to build up momentum and speed through the games (although Sunshine doesn't have a long jump, it has stuff like the spin jump and watersliding which makes up for it). Galaxy is SO much slower because you lose all your speed after landing from a long jump. And removing the dive also made the game a lot slower. I think if you look at 64 and Sunshine speedrunning, then compare it to Galaxy speedrunning, it becomes clear how much worse it got. And my final big problem with Galaxy is the level design, and I think this is something that got MUCH better with Galaxy 2. The main problem with Galaxy's level design is that using small planets was an inherently bad idea. Using a planet instead of a flat surface means that you aren't gonna be able to see the entire area at once, only a small part of it. That meant they couldn't make the planets too big or it would be tedious to find things and you'd get lost, so they made basically every planet tiny. But having tiny planets means there's almost no room to have actual platforming, and the weird camera angles also make platforming awkward. And because of that, a lot of the times the planets are just used to make you kill a few enemies or collect launch star fragments or whatever. The awkward controls and worse vision made inevitable by using planets really killed a lot of the game's level design and made it extremely repetitive and uninteresting imo. Basically all of my favorite levels use flat surfaces much more than they use planets. But I just started a playthrough of Galaxy 2 recently, and god, it's SO MUCH better. I am shocked that the general consensus seems to be that Galaxy 1 was better. It's not close for me. The main improvement that Galaxy 2 makes is that it's much more likely to use large, expansive surfaces rather than tiny planets, and that allowed the designers to make actual engaging and interesting platforming challenges. It almost feels like they felt obligated to use the planets a lot in Galaxy 1 since that was the gimmick of the game, whereas with Galaxy 2 they gave themselves more freedom to do what worked rather than what looked cool on the surface. I'm only at world 3, but I already genuinely think that the average Galaxy 2 level is better than even the best Galaxy 1 levels.
Thank you! I sincerely love these kinds of comments! I don't think the prankster comets are all as lazy as you make them out to be. Some of them for sure, but even the speed run ones adds a few new obstacles here and there, which I'm pretty sure I showed off unless I'm mixing this game with Galaxy 2 again. It happens... far too often lol. I agree that the Freezeflame purple coin comet is kinda tedious, but I thought I mentioned that? I'm sorry, it's been a while. I think a lot of the prankster comets change enough as to warrant them being there. The good ones are definitely not bad enough to be called straight padding imo, but it's clear that they "had" to up the star count to 120 for "reasons". I don't think Galaxy was rushed nor does it feel like that, far fom it, and neither did 64. Sunshine however... When I said that 64 felt sluggish, I meant when you start running from a standstill. It's really the only thing I don't like about the controls in that game, the rest is perfection. It's the same with Sunshine. When starting to run from a standstill, Mario goes way too fast! I talk a lot about Mario's movement, like the long jump issue and momentum build up, and the change in level design that mostly eliminates all the "boring" sections from Galaxy 1 in my Galaxy 2 video so it's kinda funny seeing you mentioning almost those same talking points here haha. For what it's worth, I think the use of small planets worked in Galaxy 1's favor since it allowed them to really highlight the gravity dynamic, but I'm also glad they decided to tone it down a bit in Galaxy 2!
@@FromHerotoZeroYT The speedrun ones only change in Galaxy 2 as far as I know. I was playing the yoshi dash pepper one and they added meteors, but nothing like that was in Galaxy 1, they basically just slapped a timer on it. Another thing Galaxy 2 does is start you with a tiny amount of time and you have to accumulate more as you go, which definitely makes it feel much more engaging and interesting. Overall, some of the Prankster comets are definitely very different, don't get me wrong. I loved the cosmic clone races and most of the timed purple coin levels, but basically everything else was very obvious padding and just boring. Some of the purple coin missions in particular were absolutely horrific. I guess I should clarify what I meant when I called Galaxy rushed. I think it's rushed because at least 20 of the missions (most of which are Prankster comets, but some secret stars too) are obvious padding. There's no way some of those things would have been in the game if they had a few more months of development time. In terms of polish, Galaxy is extremely polished, and I very rarely encounter glitches, but the padding shows that there was a point where the developers ran out of time and had to reuse a lot of content. Flying Mario also makes this clear to me, it would have been so awesome if there was a boss you fought as Flying Mario (I'm shocked they didn't bring it back in Galaxy 2). Anyway, I appreciate the response, and once I finish Galaxy 2, I'll check out your video on it, since I'm interested to see what you said. Personally, I'm still really enjoying it and think it improved on basically everything from Galaxy 1 other than the story (which isn't a big deal for me, but I understand some of the disappointment). As for the small planets in Galaxy 1, I think they were impressive and cool, I just think they were bad from a gameplay standpoint. The controls get much weirder, and you can't see as much. It's really fun to long jump between small planets and have the gravity go all crazy, but for me that wasn't enough to make up for it. I think they shoehorned it into Galaxy 1 a lot because of how cool and impressive it was, whereas by Galaxy 2 it wasn't impressive anymore so they felt like they had the freedom to tone it down.
Awesome video! I have yet to play the original Galaxy (I only played 2 when I was younger for some reason) but I’m hoping to get around to it sometime soon!
They're about the same in terms of quality. Some people think Galaxy 1 has better levels though, but I'm sure you'll have a blast either way when you get to playing :) Also, thanks for watching!
