One of my favorite genres - literary horror! And I agree about We Have Always Lived in the Castle - it's one of my all time favorite novels. Great video!
Great choices. Loved all the classics but We Have Always Lived in the Castle was one of my favourite reads last year and now an all time favourite - brilliant book. Tender is the Flesh is fantastic - truly horrifying! I read Tell Me I’m Worthless and it was such a fascinating read. I must get to Earthlings at some point.
Great topic! Wow, Earthlings sounds fascinating, though I don't think its for me. The fact that Murata who wrote Convenience Store Women wrote this book.... I can see the connections but still.... Loved the zoom in to stress your point during the Comfort Me with Apples suggestion. Also, Tender is the Flesh is on my tbr. I cannot wait to read it.
I typically don’t gravitate towards this genre as I ( mistakenly) associate it with like, stereotypical horror? But, I loved Rebecca, Picture Of Dorian Gray, & We Have Always Lived In The Castle, so I think I need to redefine my narrow definition- TYSM for helping me do that 📖🪱💚
Hi Scott, love your videos! I am not a horror novels reader at all but I really have enjoyed the Argentinian writer Mariana Enriquez who mainly writes gothic/horror ahort stories that are amazing! Creepy but really well written. Los Peligros de Fumar en la Cama y Las Cosas que perdimos en el Fuego are great. A couple of years ago she wrote her first novel Nuestra Parte de Noche which I highly recomend but brace yourself because it’s scary, creepy and so much more. It was longlisted a couple of years ago for the international booker prize. The have all been translated to english. She has a new short stories book which I haven’t read yet. She is the queen of horror/gothic here in south america.
My favourite literary horror are Our Wives Under the Sea, Tender is the Flesh aaand Monstrillio Comfort Me with Apples and Tell Me I’m Worthless are very high on my tbr!!!
Again, I think you'll love Sorrowland by Solomon. Tender is the Flesh was the first book I finished this year - I got a slow start. The last scene still makes me shudder. Bazterrica has a new book out next year, The Unworthy. It sounds so good: The long-awaited new novel from the author of global sensation Tender Is the Flesh: a thrilling work of literary horror about a woman cloistered in a secretive, violent religious order, while outside the world has fallen into chaos. From her cell in a mysterious convent, a woman writes the story of her life in whatever she can find-discarded ink, dirt, and even her own blood. I CAN'T WAIT! I think my favorite literary horror is Frankenstein - actually one of my favorite books ever. I also think Beloved by Toni Morrison is on my list, and Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado. I love the anger in Machado's writing. Squeeeeeeeeee! Now I want to go reread my faves. Happy Halloween!
