So much here! Steve mentioning again the 3 warning signs: ear pinning, Head shaking & tail twitching/wringing. Always great to have you say it out, Steve because these 3 silent warnings aren't always heeded. Interesting too, how watchful you are Steve, not missing a moment, even when talking to others you see a shoulder move or lost attention. It's a silent communication & a horse knows when one's distracted or not paying attention. Thanks for another great video with your lovely co-pilot, Tanya!

If this is really Tanya, I would love to put in a suggestion! I stopped commenting bc my questions weren’t answered. I know it’s time consuming but if we could get replies from Steve on some questions that would be amazing!
I’m a big fan and horse trainer in Florida. I’ve attended Meredith manor in the US and have learned a lot of training techniques there but the real world also brings so much learning! I talk about Steve being my favorite to watch and learn from on TH-cam. Absolutely amazing what kind of connection he has with horses! I’m sure as his wife, you know! Lol maybe a Q & A video sometime!?! 🤩

Feet expressions, too. The overall appearance is most important and it takes real talent. Horses react to people differently and they can be cunning. Once they are relaxed with a person, it's more of sharing real feelings.

Greetings from Norway. Thanks for sharing your life and work with us, Tanya and Steve. I am a 64 year old disability pensioner spending much of my time watching TH-cam videos. Never knew anything about horses, but thanks to you (and a couple of other TH-camrs) I am learning a lot about them. But as with all good infotainment, I learn most about myself. By seeing how you cope, I feel inspired to cope better myself.

Olav, I have been watching Steve train horses for about several weeks now, February 3, 2023. It's very enjoyable and I learn a lot. Just to let you know there is another channel that I have been watching for nearly 2 years. It's Friesian Horses from the Netherlands. 🇳🇱 Yvonne Horjus is the Host. She is recovering from a really bad accident she had early summer. She does videos of Friesians from Stall G and from her home which she has 3 ponies. I love that channel too.

@@kkheinrich9224 Hello KK, I'm sorry for the loss of your mare. It's difficult to lose a beloved pet who becomes like family. Did you watch Friesians before I mentioned it here? Or you went to the channel after I mentioned it? Yvonne, who is the host of the videos, is a wonderful person. Several of the horses are pregnant. I hope that we see new foals in the Spring. Yvonne had an accident in early summer with a horse. They fell and with horse on top of her I think. Very serious. She was in a coma for awhile. Millions of fans prayed for her. And she experienced astonishing progress. However, she is not fully recovered and has a ways to go in healing. I have also found another animal channel in little over a week that I enjoy. It's "Bondi Vet" from Australia. It just happened to come up in my feed and I thought I'd give it a try. They have different Veteranarians. They have had some very unusual circumstances of kinds of animals they worked on. It's been fascinating! And another animal channel I watch is "Tugay" from Turkey. He's also a Veteranarian. There are captions in English.

What I noticed in the pen is that she was scared with the leg, pinned her ears and raised her head real high. At the moment you stood up, she spooked. She expected beating. She calmed down real quick when the only thing that happened was for her to move. No beating, no shouting. And she expected beating and shouting.
Poor thing has been mistreated for a long time. She kicks and bites out of fear, just to survive.
I'm glad she is doing so well the first time round. And the updates sounded great! I hope she will keep this up. I'm glad she was bought by these people. I don't want to know how her life would have been without these people.

Yeahhhh ... it's another brilliant video of Steve demonstrating the groundbreaking exercises that are simplistic in nature but life transforming in the end. It's amazing what you, Steve, has been able to accomplish with so many horses over the years, by merely showing a horse who's controlling the feet by using unembellished principles to teach ... it's all about the feet ... nothing more and nothing less. With a few straightforward techniques, a horse can achieve the simplest of tasks by driving, leading, disengaging and 'all you need is me' exercises ... and it's like one has a new horse on their hands ... Bada Bing Bada Boom and Bob's your Uncle!!! And it's all done with a smile, kindness and respect ... lovely, just lovely!
Again Steve you've taught us it's not always about the horse needing to learn, as you also have to teach the handler/owner or rider (whoever it is working with the horse) how to correctly use those simple tasks, so as to not unravel all that's been done.
It's so awesome how you're able to touch and transform horses' and peoples' lives as you do, all with a touch of wisdom, kindness and respect towards the horse and person(s). What a game-changer ... just brilliant!
Thanks for yet again, another successful video of positively transforming a horse's plight, without using the physical force or the emotions of anger and/or aggression towards the horse ... always done with quality!
And let's not to forget, it's always been a delight to see a bit of the countryside and pubs/restaurants, along the way.
Thanks Steve and Tanya for sharing this adventure with us and I'm so looking forward to the next video! All the best! 😇🙌🙏

People will twitch an ear too. Even vets use a twitch, so then people think it’s ok. But horses never forget it. Twitching noses, I don’t know. There is an acupressure point there that might cause endorphin release. Might. But twitching an ear is inexcusable. I worked with a horse who had that done and she was terrified of having her ears touched. Heartbreaking and took a long time for her to get over that

I am amazed how willing horses are to let things go. She is going to need consistent leadership for a while before the kids get involved as she has just discovered what leadership feels like. Then the child that is going to handle this horse needs to be taught the principles of leadership for this horse to feel safe. At the end of the day 'as Steve says' that's all they want. Love from Canada. You two are doing a great job. Thanks for all the horses you have saved.

I just want to say that in the owner’s video where Flo kicked, Matt’s response was amazing. That was a frightful experience for him, and people will often strike out from that adrenaline rush, yet Matt stayed collected and cool…got himself to safety, but stayed calm. He has a horseman’s nature just waiting to express itself! I hope he has the interest to pursue it, and even an opportunity to do a seminar in the future.
And kudos for facing down his justified trepidation at the end!

Yes Ronnie, I agree! Also the guy holding the lick, not only had lovely timing, but also never once eyeballed this little mare.....only looked down at her feet, without any prompt from Steve. Both guys very instinctive 👍 I really hope the future is positive for this pretty mare. She's had some rough treatment at some point in the past I think. She's small, with a mighty character and has rightly got really pissed off that no one has understood her issue. Some people who feel they're not heard or misunderstood, resort to violence as a self defence mechanism. Underneath her bravado, I think she's insecure and fearful. It took kind but firm leadership from you Steve to make her feel safe and grounded, to actually be coherent enough in her own head, to be able to properly absorb what was being asked of her.....and find a peaceful place mentally and physically. Flo's humans obviously care greatly about her welfare and I really hope they find a positive way forward for this lovely pony 🤗

Kudos to the men who helped to handle the mare in this video. They followed Steve’s instructions to the letter, and saw that they worked. The more consistent handling she gets, the more she will begin trusting everyone, then the more she will eventually become trustworthy around everyone else.
Everyone did a really good job here. Characterizing her behavior as fearfulness rather than naughtiness really helped me to see why Steve did what he did.

Thank you for this! When I was younger I helped break Standardbreds. I learned this while working with a Left eye blind Colt. I would work only on his left side so as to get him used to people working on the side he couldn't see. The first thing I would do after putting him in the cross-ties. I would work on his feet. Where I would stand I would snap My fingers twice then touch his left front. I taught him how to pick up his feet then wait for me to clean his feet as soon as I dropped the left front I would snap twice again and he would hand me his right foot while I was standing on his left blind side. Then I would go to his rear stand snap twice he would then pick up his left Hind and hand it to me. Then I would snap twice again after I was finished with his foot and he would cross over and hand me his right rear. I thought about that while I was watching your video if she was just trained a little bit and rewarded for good behavior. Maybe that would help

Dear Steve, I am thinking that I would let this horse begin a new history but I would be watchful, not complacent, no kids for her, for a long while, until I felt that she can maintain her sense of emotional balance, and kindness. With a new history, the time will come when she can be arround kids! I love your work! Could not do without seeing how you work with horses, tis a top of my day to watch your videos! This one is a very excellent example of calm communication, respect for how a horse communicates, I can not think of ever Twitching a horse, how mean hearted! Thank you!

Well done. I've used some of your techniques with even my older Appaloosa (28+) who is a good guy but hasn't really had work done with him for 10 years. He picked right up on the disengaging and moving out of my space easily - even the old ones can learn new tricks!

You guys are adorable! I absolutely love watching your videos on the wonderful transformation of these precious horses and ponies (and their owners!). I only wish I could turn the clock back and use what you teach with the eventers and thoroughbreds I used to groom, train and ride…life (and safety!) would have been vastly different! My goodness, if your fabulous combination of wisdom and knowledge and skill and patience and compassion could be bottled and shipped around the globe Steve, you’d be sitting on a multi-million dollar enterprise! The world needs many more like you…you AND your beautiful wife…what a brilliant team you make! ❤️👍

This has to be my near favorite. Amazing progress! Pretty pony❤.
After getting hooked on you, I watched several other trainers and actually laughed. Even one “name brand“ guy here in the USA, but they just didn’t have the understanding of horse-thought, nor the rapid results. You are the best I’ve seen! ❤️‍🔥

I’m pretty sure that I can guess the identity of the “name brand” U.S. trainer to whom you are you’re referring. His methods seem brutish compared to Steve’s finesse.
In addition to Steve, I watch and admire Warwick Schiller, whose approach over the years has become more and more refined.

Glad to hear you don't twitch. I even saw one made of chain. Just like I often say, symptoms vs problems. A twitch will never fix the actual problem, just the symptom. I have heard that in some very large stables (hundreds of horses) in the US, they have so many to trim, the farriers won't even wait to see if they need one, they just use it every time. I found that disturbing since I trim my own and know what it takes. I laughed when one person said they would consider me a horseman when I worked with 2000 pound horses that could kill me. I guess they have never been kicked. That pony (or even smaller) could kill you with just one kick. I love horses like this and the outcome.

    AMAZING...
You not only have INCREDIBLE horse sense, BUT you articulate to humans very well!!!
The way you learn the personalities of different horses, while "asking/requesting" them to complete a series of progressive and connecting exercises is DEEP.
I'm not a horse person, my experiences with animals comes from volunteering at dog shelters. I can see the respect you have for these horses, and the respect you demand from them, in a non-corrupt manner...
Thank you & your Bette Half for sharing your wonderful experiences.

I like how you show when round penning can be quite a process, even with a horse/pony who has been around people and ridden. Obviously she has never seen people as her 'comfort' spot, so therefore it takes a while to convince her to stop trying to get away. Because many videos on this subject make it appear as though it only ever takes a couple of minutes, so people might get discouraged if it takes them and their horse longer. Realistically, it takes as long as it takes.

    • @fleetskipper1810
      @fleetskipper1810 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes, round pending is not about “wearing the horse out,” either. It’s letting them discover that you are the only place they can get repose and quiet rest.

I really do learn heaps from you and love watching your clips. If I had known things like this back when I was younger I would have been a much better horse person. I did not grow up around them but was besotted over horses. So mum would pay for a lesson or country hack every year for my birthday. Later, after I left school I volunteered for a horse riding school for 6 months and later for a place that rehabilitated abused horses. Then I moved to NZ and learned so much more. I also owned a horse for a while but due to financial issues had to sell him. I do miss my horsey days so love learning new things from people like you. Thank you heaps.

I really like your videos, you are firm but fair with the horses. A transporter scared my gelding a few months ago, but since I've had this horse (seven years) he has always gotten into the truck on the first try. Now he stays in front of the footbridge and refuses to move, if he puts a foot he then throws himself backwards or to the side or pulls to leave (it's a cross between a Lusitanian and a Comtois draft horse so you can imagine the size) and does not hesitate to crush us in his path. I changed stables on January 5 and boarding was very difficult, the manager of the pension came with a so-called "ethologist" who especially forced my horse by passing the lead behind his buttocks (it was the first time I saw my gelding throw blows with his hindquarters) and in addition he took a riding crop and kept hitting him on the sides, I didn't know what to do and he asked for 70€ when he did nothing but kick my horse. He never released the pressure when my horse put a foot in the truck nor reassure the horse when he was doing something right everything was done in force, I think the next transport might be horrible after all that.. I was all alone I didn't dare stand up to this man in front of the stable manager. It's a shame that you don't work in France, I really needed your help to help me restore my horse's confidence for transport. Cordially

I've never had horses and I got him to be a companion to 3 goats but quickly established that he was trying to mount them! He now has a fence between him and them! Thank you Steve, Tanya and the rest of the team. I was watching 2 Friesian colts being returned to their home stable. They were 2 year olds. One was obviously dominant and the other was mouthing his submission. I could see the more mature one leading and driving the younger one very clearly. I was happy with myself that I knew what was happening. Of course the older two year old was really a teenager so he was exaggerating the behaviour. The owner even mentioned he was being mean, but he was not hurting the younger one. She said the younger one was not yet a stallion so he didn’t really understand what was going on. Great fun.

She's a quick study! Very smart girl. Hasn't learned to trust people but you got her respect quickly and getting "good ears" (submissive when they alternate, (one fwd one back)), and pricked. She knows you're speaking her language. Wonderful. My trainer once said, if they apologize when u correct them when they know you know they disrespected you, then they're not mean. They need to learn not to talk to you like they would another horse, not with their feet, teeth, shoulder or butt.

You are amazing. I learned so much from this video. My daughter has rescued a horse that bites and can’t be groomed and everything in here might help make this poor little Morgan safe one day. Very similar issues. All stable hands terrified. I am on board with the issue of safety with the kids grandkids and visitors. My daughter is still a little naive about the risk and liability of taking on a horse like this. She is as green as it gets as a new horse owner 🤦🏻‍♀️ but she has made progress with this poor little Morgan who loves to work but is such a prima donna boss mare. She really needs a heard but no one will turn her out with other horses because of the nipping and domination. 😢 My daughter is into gentle and emotional horsemanship (W Schiller) and I make her also watch your videos because you really a blunt about dealing with the dominance issues. You can’t gentle a horse if you can’t get it to respect your feet! ❤

Love it - really shows how desperate these horses are for leadership (as are we all!) Which is NOT to be confused with bullying & bossing about. I'm sure Flo will come good; lots of reenforcing, repeating and proving she doesn't need to be afraid or be lashing out in fear. I also think it's good for kids to understand how space works, and respect - it's a 2-way street. Given Time & building on your great ground work, Steve, I'm sure Flo will be a delightful family pony. Thanks for all your hard slog.

You have done an amazing job with the pony by starting at the beginning and demonstrating the results of that work. It would take an exceptional young person with an appropriate adult for leadership to work with the pony for a while after you finish your work. The environment leads to many opportunities for distraction of the horse. You deserve many kudos at this point for the changes and results due to your ground work. Your training videos are exceptional.
