    Foxhunting is a lot of fun. I think I prefer it on Top Band, because if you hide the fox in a wooded area you can get really sneaky with how you hide the antenna and it's quite a challenge when the signal seems to be coming from everywhere as you get close. It's especially good if there's a fence or other extensive conductor you can load up. Much stumbling through brush, falling down hollows, mud, sweat, tears and un-amateur-like language ensues. The cup of tea afterwards always tastes particularly good...

    I am new to sdr and amateur radio but totally getting into this. Grabbed a hackrf one and learning antenna design, also now building a quad array sdr system for doing exactly this. This looks like a hell of a lot of fun.

    Beginner's luck! My wife and I found the fox on my first hunt as well. This was with a bunch of experienced operators. All I used was a 2m radio and a cereal box covered with tin foil as a reflector/angle finder.

      I know this comment is quite old now, but if you're still here, I'd love to know how you set that up!

    • @kurtismoser
      @kurtismoser 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@digitalchaos1980 cut a cereal box top and bottom off. Cut down one of the corner seams so it is one flat piece of cardboard. Cover it in aluminum foil and then fold it in half to create a right angle. To use it you hold it behind your handheld antenna with the corner pointed at your chest and the two ends extending away from you as you receive the fox hunt signal. Now slowly turn to your right or left in anticipation of doing a 360 while standing on the same point. The reflector will focus the signal into your antenna. As you turn the signal will sound weaker or stronger. Once you find the strongest signal you will start traveling straight ahead.

      @@kurtismoser Wow, thank you! I wasn't expecting an answer, or for it to be so quick! 😁 So basically the box becomes a rudimentary parabolic reflector, ok! I was thinking in a totally different context at first, now I feel silly haha. I used to foxhunt when I was much younger with my CB friends in my car over a wide portion of woods and dirt roads, but I've recently gotten interested in higher freq RDF and found your way quite interesting. Again, thanks for the hit back! 😎

    A great video showing how much fun amateur radio and a club function can be. I suggested a fox hunt at a local club meeting and almost no one had a clue what is was. The one person that did know said it was too expensive. I pointed out we could make the rules and could limit the equipment for the event. Noses went up in the air. Oh, well.......

    In the Cincinnati area they are a club OH-KY-IN who has a fox hunt every month. One time they used the Ohio River to mask which way to go and which side of the river. They are asked every year to talk at Dayton and have won Nationals Fox Hunt. If you ever get a chance to see one. Go for it

    what if the fox uses vertical polarization? i'm not sure these dudes are even considering the possibility because the guy with the handheld uses his vertically.

    What about getting an old British GPO Radio Detector Van with all of the hardware that usually comes with it and see if you can catch anyone on the next fox hunt, just has to be converted to left hand drive but that should not be hard to do.

    Good job, Kevin. Any ideas as to where you want hide the fox? My idea was to use two antennas and they alternate on the transmission. The hunters then fave to follow a coax to the transmitter just like you would at an apartment complex. Anyway, have with it.

      My first thought was to go about 5 miles up one of the rivers that pass through Ft. Wayne and put it on a small raft.
      Just kidding.
      I do! Can't say anything publicly though. Club members watch my vids. You'll just have to wait for the video!

      LOL The first team there gets to use a canoe, late comers must swim. That will be good for your radio. The Elmer that runs our Fox Hunt, uses it for a teaching opportunity. New hams make a tape measure Yagi that they use for the hunt. A 25 foot temp measure makes lots of antennas. No one is left out. Your first hunt is easy but once you get the idea and method down he gets very cleaver. It's a great way to keep new hams active in our club.

    Great video - I am curious how the one gentlemen was able to use an offset attenuator with the HTX-202. I have one, and a 4 MHz offset attenuator and can't tune up 4 MHz to use it.

    • @3oldtechdudes
      @3oldtechdudes 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I bet it is a 2MHz one, at least I think I've seen oscillators for offsets like that.

    interesting... a bit deceiving since a fox was not involved at all. You could catch a fox (or maybe a dog, cat, etc), and hook up a receiver to it (maybe by duct tape?), and give it a 24 hour head start. Now that would be a real foxhunt! ;)

    • @loughkb
