Thank you very much for inviting me to this collab! I really enjoyed it working with you. And I think we had quite some fun during our chat :) Video turned out awesome!
Hi Jack, it’s Juliette… I had to change my TH-cam profile. Regarding this particular lens, so far I feel pretty satisfied with the Nikon Z version sometimes though when I want to zone focus I’ll take out my Nikon pre-AI 28 mm. And I don’t have a Leica either, but…This is by far one of the best videos you’ve ever made! Where to start? I had heard of Dido, but I didn’t really know about his work. Thank you for introducing me. Also, I really enjoyed meeting Phil. I agree with some of his very insightful comments. I shoot 28 mm and that is the focal length I feel most comfortable with, but now I understand why. As he said, the environmental nature of it itself well in terms of longevity. I never thought of this before, but that is so true! Also I am not really an introvert. Maybe I’m 50-50 at best so for me getting close with a 28 mil not that challenging. However, there are days when I do feel a little more introverted, but even then just back out a little more. I also agree with Phil‘s statement that if you should shoot mainly zone focusing you’re wasting your money on buying an expensive lens. That’s so true! Some of my best shots were with inexpensive micro 4/3 lenses shooting 28 Mil on the street midday zone focusing. Thank you so much again for a great video!

I have even been tilting my GR into some pretty deep Dutch angles to fit everything in that I want. I loved the comment “I’m introverted, but I like taking pictures of people” I’m exactly the same way. I recently went to Houston Tx to do some work for my new cleaning business, and took my new Nikon zf, 50 1.8, some lights, and a background. I was out there for a total of 10 days. I found some very interesting subjects but couldn’t come around to asking to take their portraits. Eventually a person helping me on the job told his coworkers from the place about me taking portraits, and I ended up shooting one young lady. Next thing I know I’m being asked to do more and more. I took one of my all time favorite portraits I’ve taken in 20 years there. Because of that, I ended up having the courage to speak to a young lady at a restaurant who captivated me. Turns out she was a Nepalese immigrant and I shot a street portrait outside the restaurant. So glad I moved past my fear to take that photo. Photography definitely helps me work at my introvert tendencies.
That’s great to hear - I’ve found photography has really helped my communication skills in my day job. Most communication cues are non verbal so observing people on the street really hones this craft. Happy shooting!
28mm is for when my mind wants to emerse in the environment or get very close. It's all about how I am feeling and want to step out into the world. 35/40 Is general, neutral feeling. 5omm is when I am primarily interested in people and what they are doing. So I also do the reverse - pick a focal length I don't feel and force myself to find a way to make it work. BTW, I am in Japan later this month for 9 days. Can't wait! Any suggested photo walk groups? Love your videos BTW. Very thoughtful and intelligent but also I feel your artistry.
Thanks for watching - forcing a focal length switch is a neat trick! I don’t know any photography walk groups, might look one up as I am heading back to Japan (yay!) in November. Hope you have a great trip!
Another fun video. I have been looking at this focal length to add to my Leica kit and this lens has popped onto my radar as well. The unfinished lock has been something that has had me holding off for now. Good to hear some different perspectives on not only the focal length but also the lens itself. Hope to have made a choice before my trip to Japan. I guess worst case is I bring some of my Nikon kit to fill my Leica focal length gaps. Keep up the good work.
@@BokehTherapy I will be heading to Japan next March for about 3 weeks. Spend most of my time in Tokyo and spend a little time in Komoro visiting family. Plenty of time to prep and plan but as it seems you are aware making those gear decisions when packing can strike fear in a photographer. Never know what lens you think you might miss.
I recently used my Simera 28mm M mount with techart adapter on my trip to Tokyo. I originally ordered the z mount but returned it for the M mount with adapter. Your Nikon ZF manual focus video was very helpful and timely. But I found that wide open at 1.4, I still needed to zoom in to fine tune focus, even with focus confirmation.
Thanks for your feedback - the thickness of the adapter seems to really affect the alignment of the focus confirmation box. Good to know - hope you had a great trip in Tokyo!
Thanks for an interesting and enlightening video. I have been giving the 28mm format, and specifically the Thypoch, some serious consideration. Naturally my Leica M3 has drawn me to a variety of very nice 50mm lenses, but I want to challenge myself more with wider lenses for street photography. I already have a vintage Canon 28mm f3.5 lens with a Voigtlander 28mm external viewfinder. More importantly though, the conversation about introverts really hit home for me, and took me by surprise in a delightful way. Much appreciated!
It’s specific to the TTartisan 6 bit adapter. You get focus confirmation via a green box when you’ve nailed focus, no need to punch in! But you lose accurate distance scales for zone focusing. The M to Z 6 bit adapter seems to line up fine on my other m lenses (35mm, 50mm) just not on this 28 for some reason
Great video. I have to admit working in a wider field of view such as 35 mm is still a challenge for me. However, I recognized that even 35 mm is too tight for a city like Hong Kong. As such, I actually gravitated using the 18 mm f2 fujinon lens on my X-Pro 2 which is their version of a 28 mm lens (actually more like 27 mm) a lot.
For first time visits to a location I find wider is easier to shoot with - I am planning how to shoot 85 or tighter when I eventually get back to Tokyo… thanks for watching!
Another fabulous, engaging video, Jack--thanks so much. I enjoyed your collab. with Phil as well. It's a shame the TTArtisan 6-bit adaptor has the incorrect thickness such that it does not allow an accurate focus scale for hyper-focal range focus. Surely TTArtisan will offer an updated version that fixes this glaring flaw. So you did not notice smearing of the corners (softness) due to the thicker Nikon Z sensor stack when shooting wide open, as has been reported on some reviews? This probably would not be an issue for street images, but it would be or landscapes, especially focused near infinity. Its too bad the smaller Voigt. 28mm f/1.5 has pronounced fringing wide open.
I shot some landscapes stopped down, corners looked OK to my eye! I always get a bit of smearing wide open with wide angle lenses, although this is better on the bigger Z mount than E mount. Purple fringing is my Achilles heel for lenses so I would go with Thypoch over the Voigtlander but I think the Voigtlander is a bit sharper. Lots of choice is good!
28mm is difficult for me. I have a 28mm Voigt. I probably should go out and try to zone focus and shoot from the hip. I’m just so used to shooting wide open all the time 😂 Another great vid Jack. Shoutout to Phil
I am a sucker for wide open everything too lol - zone focusing makes the biggest difference for me at 28, really different results. Glad I found a way to do the collab with Phil - we should do one too some time!
Nice video Jack! I´ve got recently a new Zf and have been doing some research regarding lenses for this camera. The Thypoch 28 and 35mm look pretty nice but I wonder if would enjoy manual focusing without being able to use the manual focus aids on the Zf due to the lack of contacts on these lenses. I´ve been also taking a look at Voigtländer´s 40 mm f1.2 and 35 mm f2 but are currently hard to get here in Germany. Maybe if you get the Thypoch 35 mm f1.4 you could compare it to the new nikon 35 mm f1.4 in terms of quality. P.S. I really enjoy how you tell a story and mix it very good with these lens reviews. Keep it up!
Hello! Totally with you, the voigtlanders are hard to get in Australia too. Hopefully I will be kept in the loop with Thypoch’s new releases. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
Enjoyed the discussion and dialog about the 28mm Thypoch. It does seem like a very nice lens for the money. Lately, I’ve gotten so used to shooting 50mm on the street that it was a big adjustment to get back and try a 28mm. I agree - stepping into the arena. Would you be able to add the links to the Z to M adapters you referenced in the video. I’m often using the Nikon Zf and Leica M combos when I shoot. Thanks and homage to Daido Moriyama - he’s got such a great style.
Thanks Michael - the TTArtisan M to Z adapter is the best value one I've used: ttartisan.myshopify.com/products/m-z-6bit-adapter-ring?ref=qucarpva The close focus adapters are great but quite pricey - B&H and eBay seem to be the best place to track them down? The Voigtlander one in particular seems to be sold out for long stretches at a time
I did get the 28mm f2.8 for the Zf and the shots I have taken were great! I looked back this weekend at shots in Helsinki using a AF-S NIKKOR 20mm f/1.8G ED and a AF-S NIKKOR 16-35mm f/4G ED VR on my Nikon D850. I was pleasantly surprised with some of the street moments I got. But weird to stand so close. I would not do this in Chicago but Helsinki (or Tokyo) is fairly safe.
Street photography in general is becoming less safe unfortunately. Tokyo is a photography friendly city as long as you're respectful in my experience. Great to hear another vote for the 28mm f2.8!
There will be a cinema version of the Thypoch lenses soon, I tried them on the IBC trade show and they are really amazing if you are into filmmaking with small lenses.
As a first time user of a lens with an infinity lock, I didn't have an issue with unlocking it. It almost felt like it never was there from how I moved my fingers. If anything, it makes focusing just before infinity a bit annoying.
Thanks for the feedback! I quite like the look of it, and am leaning towards the M-mount version myself. Optical performance seems to be identical across both versions
Thanks for this video Jack. I've been having a similar debate about whether to get the Simera 28 in native Z mount, or adapt a 28mm M mount (Thypoch or Voigtlander). One of my concerns about adapting M mount glass is differences in optical performance on Z mount due to the sensor stack thickness, so I messaged Thypoch to inquire about it and this was their response; "We have adjusted the optical structures to ensure the best possible image quality rendered by the Simera 28mm f/1.4 Z mount." Better optical performance combined with an accurate focus scale for zone focusing (without using a helicoid adapter) makes the native Z mount more appealing on paper, but losing focus confirmation for when I want to shoot wide open is unfortunate. I love shooting 28mm (equiv.) on the GR3, but I've been yearning for a manual focus 28mm to practice zone focus with. The large aperture on the Simera is nice, but at the same time I wonder if maybe one of the smaller Voigtlander M lenses might be better for my use case. Do you have any experience with those lenses, specifically adapted to the ZF?
Hello Nate! In my experience the M and Z mount Simera perform the same optically on the Zf - the bigger Z mount gets these m mount lenses closer to the sensor than other mounts I think. Losing focus confirmation for 28mm isn’t a big loss - depth of field even at f1.4 is still manageable with focus peaking/magnify. Do you shoot with a M body as well? If not go for the Z mount version, or wait to see if Voigtlander releases a native z mount 28mm that’s chipped?
@@BokehTherapy Thanks Jack! Yes I've been hoping and waiting for Voigtlander to release a Z mount of one of their 28mm's (seems like Nokton is the trend), but they are certainly taking their sweet time. I have yet to own an M mount camera, but anything is possible I suppose 😆 Perhaps I'll pop over to MapCamera and see if they have a demo unit of the Simera that I can try!
Hi @BokehTherapy you mentioned a M2Z adapter which provides the green focus confirmation box dose this also provide the focal length and aperture in the exif data?
It’s the one from TTartisan (link in video description). The focal length can be set via a dial on the side of the adapter. Aperture does transmit via the adapter but is a bit clunky: has to be set manually on both the lens and the camera. I demonstrated it in an older video?. “Nikon Zf Manual Focus: The New Leica”: th-cam.com/video/Cw9G6pYAFkQ/w-d-xo.html
I don’t think it will happen - aperture rings aren’t in Nikon’s modern design language for some reason! I will settle for a firmware upgrade to add focus confirmation for any lens chipped or not. Nice to hear from you both!
35 was my fav pov. Until i owned the gr3. It was an awesome beast plus it was pocketable. It could also get me upclose with my subjects. Its hard to use a 28mm lens coz i always have one in my bag, the ricoh GRd.
It’s too bad they don’t make the Z mount with electronic contacts! It’s a bit futzy to use M mount and the 6 bit adapter- and maybe a bit vain but I like the way it looks without an adapter
Jack, I have my Zf now. Learning to set up manual focus with old school lenses. Getting focus confirmation, when it works, is a dream but, at least for me, it only works if the lens has contacts, right? With old lenses and a non-chipped adapter, you’re doing it all by zooming in by eye, right?
That’s right - I am still zooming in by eye for lenses without contacts. Another reason to go for M mount if you use M to Z 6 bit adapter from TTartisan. Thanks for watching and congrats on the Zf!
@@BokehTherapy I received that adapter yesterday but am having some issues attaching my Summicron. The adapter attaches to the camera just fine but the lens won’t seat in the adapter. Neither will my Zeiss 28mm either. I am assuming I’m missing a step somewhere.
I am not sure exactly,, what it is BUT Your Photographs have a "Special Quality" since the advent of the ZF for You !!!!!!!! I have been following You since the beginning because of Your way of telling a story!!!!!! I have seen Your photos from the past,, and they, by comparison were a bit lifeless and struggling (in no way terrible or bad).... I think that You have clicked with the tool :) :) :)
Thanks John, I think you’re right! I have been shooting more consistently since getting the Zf, and that’s made the difference I think. Still a work in progress!
If you use the M to Z TTArtisan 6 bit adapter the M mount version shows focus confirmation (green box lights up) on the Zf. The Z-mount version isn't chipped so you'll need to zoom magnify to check focus
has anyone tried the Neewer FE to Z adapter with an E mount version of this lens? Seems like you might be able to get focus confirmation plus a very snug fit.
@@BokehTherapy I guess the advantage of going the TT Artisan to M mount route is that if a person ever gets a Leica they'll already have some lenses for it :)

@@BokehTherapy I will have to try that! The focal length does seem to work well in tight confines, but I do not shoot in such cases too often. But the more I try to use it, the more I learn, so that is fun!

I’m just so used to shooting wide open all the time 😂
Another great vid Jack.
Thanks Lars - cinema lenses are very cool! I used to have a whole rig setup filming with manual lenses. Will check it out!
Thanks for this video Jack. I've been having a similar debate about whether to get the Simera 28 in native Z mount, or adapt a 28mm M mount (Thypoch or Voigtlander). One of my concerns about adapting M mount glass is differences in optical performance on Z mount due to the sensor stack thickness, so I messaged Thypoch to inquire about it and this was their response;
"We have adjusted the optical structures to ensure the best possible image quality rendered by the Simera 28mm f/1.4 Z mount."
Better optical performance combined with an accurate focus scale for zone focusing (without using a helicoid adapter) makes the native Z mount more appealing on paper, but losing focus confirmation for when I want to shoot wide open is unfortunate.
I have yet to own an M mount camera, but anything is possible I suppose 😆
Perhaps I'll pop over to MapCamera and see if they have a demo unit of the Simera that I can try!
Ohhh I am jealous of your proximity to Map Camera… but their M mount selection on display is very dangerous haha. Let me know what you go with!
Hi Jack, I very much enjoy your videos.
Hello Stefan thanks so much! More to come soon, lots of new Nikon lenses arriving for Z mount. Good time to be a mirrorless shooter
@@BokehTherapyI would love a nikkor 28mm 1.4 following the 35 and 50.
Mmm they don’t have a 28mm z … f1.4 would be great!
“Nikon Zf Manual Focus: The New Leica”:

@@BokehTherapy thank you Jack
No problems!
for the ZF i would really really love nikon to make an f2 with aperture ring. metal construction if possible.
You’re singing to the choir 😂
I don’t think it will happen - aperture rings aren’t in Nikon’s modern design language for some reason! I will settle for a firmware upgrade to add focus confirmation for any lens chipped or not. Nice to hear from you both!
35 was my fav pov. Until i owned the gr3. It was an awesome beast plus it was pocketable. It could also get me upclose with my subjects. Its hard to use a 28mm lens coz i always have one in my bag, the ricoh GRd.
Love your 28mm shots - you figured it out! I am getting there slowly
It’s too bad they don’t make the Z mount with electronic contacts! It’s a bit futzy to use M mount and the 6 bit adapter- and maybe a bit vain but I like the way it looks without an adapter
Yup it looks like a native lens! Hope Nikon adds focus confirmation for dumb lenses and adapters via firmware. It’s doable I think!
Mmm did you depress the little grey tab in the side of the adapter? It should click in once the M lens is attached
9:57 Same!
Glad to hear it’s not just me - thanks for watching!
I like how this lens looks, but I am not getting more lenses other than 58/1.4, and maybe Pentax 645 FA* 300/4.
That’s a big difference between the focal lengths! The 58mm f1.4 is legendary, looking to test it out myself. Thanks for watching
Why is the M mount version for the Zf better for shooting wide open when the when the Z mount has a more accurate focus scale?
If you use the M to Z TTArtisan 6 bit adapter the M mount version shows focus confirmation (green box lights up) on the Zf. The Z-mount version isn't chipped so you'll need to zoom magnify to check focus
@@BokehTherapy Oh, I see! Thank you 🙏
No problems - both have pros and cons. Hope the Zf gets a firmware update to allow focus confirmation on all manual lenses
has anyone tried the Neewer FE to Z adapter with an E mount version of this lens? Seems like you might be able to get focus confirmation plus a very snug fit.
I think this should work but haven’t tested it myself. Would love some feedback too!
@@BokehTherapy I guess the advantage of going the TT Artisan to M mount route is that if a person ever gets a Leica they'll already have some lenses for it :)
lol yup that will offset the cost of a M body, might as well be a done deal
When I started to take photos (1967) I was told to buy a 50mm lens So I did,,,, a few weeks later I returned to the camera store... I remember looking at the 35mm, 28mm, then the 24mm!!! When I looked thru the camera with the 24mm,, I had to have it!!! I returned the next day and bought the 24mm:) :) when I showed(@15yo) My photos at My local newspaper they asked what My secret to such photos they said they were special n hired me to work the night shift (after school).... It does take chutzpah to be so close (as a loner n introvert n child) I was Naive of Personal Space and have Invaded it till now at 72yo, I will say it is NOT a lens for the Coward!!!!!!!!!! Daidō Moriyama, has been a favorite of mine (I own a book of his) !!!!!! Maybe a deep dive into his History....
Oh you love 24mm! It is too wide for me but amazing if you can get the shots you want. Daido is still shooting away!
Thanks for another insightful video! I too struggle with 28mm. I have the Z mount 28 f2.8 lens and always feel it is too wide. With that said, I am rarely in very tight spaces, where it would excel. I need to experiment with it more to find a place for it.
Shooting from the hip blind is pretty fun! That’s the only way I got some interesting results with 28mm. Still don’t use it often enough, need to add it to the rotation. Hope you’re well!
@@BokehTherapy I will have to try that! The focal length does seem to work well in tight confines, but I do not shoot in such cases too often. But the more I try to use it, the more I learn, so that is fun!
@@EricWier Public bus stops and train stations are full of people in transit in Australia - lots of photo opportunities there. Look forward to seeing your attempts!
Most M-mount shooters shoot zone focusing, and you will be way happier with the Voigtlander 28mm f2.8. It's smaller and lighter.
I had a good look at Phil's copy during our chat. Size looks amazing! I'd be happy with a 28mm f2, hopefully Thypoch can release one that's very compact
Love my mount simera 28/1.4. But the lense rear plastic cap is loose, fall off all the time.
Thought it was just my copy! Not sure why, it fits fine on the camera
@@BokehTherapy I tried using my Nikkor lense cap, same. But it fits camera body perfectly.
Very little give at the lens mount, feels like a native lens. If only it had electronic contacts
@@BokehTherapy I thought it has the electronic contact before i buy it. lol.
You should have way more views, I watch just for the story telling sometimes
Thanks so much - it’s getting harder to reach a broad audience but grateful for the ones that keep coming back. More videos coming soon!
Sir this time I have a question again about what to choose sony zve10 for 615 or (around599) usd or sony
a6600 631 usd only now it's the biggest offer of the year coming now I don't know what to choose both are quite the same with little difference
I think zve10 is more video focused and a6600 is more photography focused? Not much difference, Sony puts out a lot of cameras. I think it will come down to ergonomics so try it out in store if you can
