It’s so scary when you finally realize it’s just manipulation. Then you understand the power of silence. It’s crazy making to a covert narcissist. Taking back control through no reaction or a noncommittal response is liberating. I’m enjoying this newfound freedom more & more. People get the dish they usually serve others 😉

it's not manipulation for the sake of manipulation: it's a survival strategy for them. When they don't get their supply, it's like cutting off their oxygen supply. In a way, their life is that of eternal misery, they can't even enjoy the smallest of things. It's a wretched life they live 24/7 and unfortunately, some of us have to cross their path.

I think sometimes they did it for entertainment, to watch the actions of others around them, enjoying this. And sometimes to move attention OFF of them, when sneaking around. Sigh.

Yes a medical drama is always a good one, deflects from the current situation, gives them all the attention they need and sympathy.

Medical emergencies are their favourite tactic. One I worked with claimed to have a diabetic episode and once I managed ro run around looking for a first aider, he suddenly claimed to be fine once help arrived. The following day he brought all his medicines and placed them on the office desk expecting me to query what they did for him. Unfortunately for him I I had wised up to his game and completely ignored the charade. That was the last time he tried any shit on me because right after I gave him the silent treatment and found inner peace.
These creatures are truly sick beyond redemption. Steer clear if you can.

Omg, this exact thing happened to me. We were just starting a nice dinner when he said he couldn't breathe. He looked and sounded fine, but I called a waitress over. He had them running round for him, asking him if he needed a doctor. He was suddenly fine within a couple of minutes. There was absolutely nothing wrong with him. We got funny looks from the waiting staff for the rest of the night. It was so embarrassing.

Thanks sooo much for explaining the motives behind this baffling behavior.🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
As a 7-8yo child I began recognizing certain patterns in my mom...
1.If she observes something very unseemly in someone, she pounces on it, so happy to find fault so she can criticize someone.
2.If it's something that's only mildly unseemly, she exaggerates it to make it much worse than it is, a confusing mixture of truth and lies.
3.If there is nothing at all that she can find wrong, she'll just fabricate an outrageous lie out of thin air.
Everyone she knows is either guilty of something outrageous, or is being prompted(demanded) to share in her outrage about somebody else, or both.
I've often witnessed the event that she's describing(lying about), and while others are in getting sucked into mom's lies, I'm shocked and traumatized at how far she will go to throw someone under the bus just so she can get her twisted emotional needs met.
And I've also had my turn getting thrown under the bus, endlessly.

Narcissists also like to chose targets to do horrible and bizarre things to, so when the target is forced to get help, no one believes the target. Then the narcissist can say, "See, I'm not the narcissist, they are!"

A story: The covert narc went to visit his flying monkey-relatives and misplaced his car fob. Chaos ensued as everyone was enlisted to search for the key. Of course, he advised them all that he couldn't tell me, irrationally suggesting to his family that big bad me would not send replacement keys to him. (Nonsense.) The fob was found the next day, but not before I was bad-mouthed and he had to be rescued by concerned relatives. Thank you for the excellent insight into what I am still trying to understand!

Emotional addiction is similar to sex addiction in that individuals may seek out intense emotional highs, often through drama or chaos, to experience dopamine and other neurochemical rewards. People with lower emotional intelligence tend to act impulsively based on their emotions, rather than managing them thoughtfully. Emotional intelligence is a multi-faceted/dimensional construct. Each of these facet/dimensions can be applied in a variety of contexts, situations, and relationships, and may involve more specific sub-skills in different circumstances. This is why AI would never be able to humans…it might act like one but not one because AI and robots doesn’t have emotion.

So spot on Darren. It's all about NEEDING to be the center of attention which makes the narc feel 'special' and important...so they create situations in order to get this fix, and then manipulate the hell out of it. Pathetic. How about when a narc gives a running commentary out loud, on what they're doing, or thinking, for everyone around to hear. More of the 'I'm so important, so special, everyone I'm sure wants to know what I'm doing, thinking!, etc.' Sheesh.

This describes my adult narc daughter perfectly. Always an emergency. Even if it is not. As her mom I get drawn in. Am trying to walk that razors edge of care and love, and exhaustion and seeing what this is now. Especially difficult when this is a family member. I do see she does seem to get a dopamine hit by this behaviour. Meanwhile I am so depleted. …
    Can’t unsee it now.

My 37 year old daughter is a mess as well, and life is all about her poor choices, of which I'm sure that I'm the scapegoat of those poor choices. I divorced her father, who could definitely be diagnosed with NPD, after eight years of an insufferable marriage. He catered and coddled her, and allowed her to do whatever pleased her, especially if it went against my good parenting.
I feel that she only reaches out to me out of obligation, or just keeping a weak connection, in case she actually needs me down the road. Her selfishness has given me cause to finally go no contact with her, which gives me a great sense of peace.

      Same. Mine too. Also 37.
She creates problems where there were none and has been the cause of many a drama but somehow she's the innocent party and has done nothing wrong.
Then comes the barrage of blame, criticism ,put downs, personal remarks and labels.
I was so sick of it all.
I've recently first limited then cut contact.

Love the way you contemptuously dismiss the toxic game of one upmanship these people play. There is even one who claimed that therapy would put him at a disadvantage by reaching him through cognitive therapy to treat others as he would like to be treated. In stead as a psychopath he feels he is helping people to avoid ending up with people like him while claiming that no one but him knows what they are talking about when it comes to this subject of taking advantage of people and manipulating and exploiting them. The truth is that these people are empty shells and cause chaos during quiet moments because they are bored and frustrated at looking onwards and terrified that, there's nobody home. The emptiness can be seen in the 2 situations of their eyes. 1 glassy and empty and expressionless 2 absolutely black as they clear you from their mind and disengage with rage at those who don't follow their script. Their attempt at causing chaos is simply to get away from their greatest enemy, boredom. They are mad at people who can sit quietly for hours and meditate either on how to improve their personalities, fix wrongs they have done to others or meditate on what they have learned throughout the day and what they can do about it tomorrow. Toxic people are stuck in the now. All they think about is what they can either get others to do for them or how others can keep them distracted and entertained. This is the reason for ghosting, discard and abandonment of the relationship or seeking someone else instead of you..refusing to be drawn into their chaotic lives means, you are no fun anymore

It is exhausting since she would tell everyone she needs help with this and that and then people come to me and ask why I cant help my own mother with it, your mother has even asked us to do etc... and you have to explain that you want to help but she will immediately delay or withdraw the request, it is merely a way of engaging people, the last thing she actually wants is you helping. "My document camera doesn't work. Why? because I threw away the electrical extension as it was "unsightly"." Have the custodian mount a battery operated clock 3 inches from the ceiling so they "have to" call that custodian back twice a year, or more, to change the clock or change batteries. Child brings a random piece of paper to the office with the message of "my teacher says they don't need this anymore". Parks in handicapped spot with no placard as there is "no parking spaces" (does this often). "Someone planted flowers outside my room, but I wanted to plant native plants." Two weeks later three South American milkweed plants show up as planted in that California soil. 👎🏼 Bad for the monarchs. "Do you work in your car because you are a hoarder?" (says the person with a *hot mess* K-6th classroom with many cabinets, and inside of the door, painted a blood red color.). Calls the help desk, I get the voicemail, fix issue and call within 5 mins to convey. Next thing I hear is in a meeting about how "someone" was "very upset" that they were helped by me. I wait for help desk tickets now (it wasn't my day to listen to calls I just like to start August off right).
And they wonder why I set up a killer office in my car with steering wheel desk, and leave when I need to charge up my laptop. Best part of my car office? I can listen to your videos......and in peace. ✌🏼💋

Do these types of behavior ever something other than narcissism and can narcissism be accompanied by other disorders. I ask because we have a family member who married into the family that is causing so much grief and strain on everyone. We've all put her at arm's length for our own safety but she's the mom to our loved kittle one so we'll be around her for the next 18 years. She's a head scratcher for sure, almost broke her hubs' mental health (he's separated now and doing very well). Autism, adhd and LD are strong in the fam.
